How Far Away From the Wall/ House Should I Plant My Limelight Hyd
Comments (13)THANK YOU everyone for your all of your thoughtful insight. hcmcdole: I really like your idea of trying to grow them as a free form esapaillar. Or what if I just prune REALLY aggressively on the backside???... So here's what I'm thinking I'm going to do: I am going to prune REALLY aggressively on the backside of the plant to minimize it's growth and spread against the wall... Do you think this would work??? I don't mind how much if it wants to spread forward away from the wall or side ways in width. I would also like to minimize and maintain about a 5 foot height... That way it can overlap the bottom edge of my windows... And I can see the flowers even from the inside of the house. Is limelight the kind of hydrangea that will respond well to pruning and shaping during the growing season??? I know that I would probably make my life a whole lot easier if I just got the Little Lime variety... But it was nearly twice as much for a 2 gallon... Which isn't in my budget. What do you all think??? Am I going to be sorry years from now for even considering this idea and thinking I can keep Limelights growth maintained with pruning during the growing season??? I've never had much luck with hydrangeas in the past... So it's difficult for me to fathom a hydrangea that will grow 8 feet tall and grow so quickly....See MoreVinyl stick-on tile installed a few inches away from wall
Comments (3)Couldn't you put some type of thick baseboard, wainscotting, built in benches or bookcases or a mixture of these to hide the unevenness of the wall and cover the tiles. I would square the room as best I could and get the vinyl tiles as close to the wall as possible and then decide on something to afix to the wall to hide the uneven edges. I think if the tiles are away from the wall they may tend to peel up and I think it would be more pleasing to the eye for them to go all the way to the wall. Do you have a picture you can show us? I used vinyl stone look tiles in my garden shop and some people have thought it was real stone. I put them as close to the wall as possible and then covered with baseboards (of course it was new construction and the walls are fairly straight). It was recommended to start in the middle of the room - but I laid mine out in a dry run and found that if I started at the entrance door with a full tile then only two walls had part of a tile and they are hidden with bookshelves, a counter and displays. Make sure the floor is perfectly clean before laying the self stick tiles. I used a sealer on my concrete floor beforehand too....See MoreHow to level existing base cabinets for coutnertop install
Comments (22)I have to agree, unfortunately, spending the big dollars on granite to put on cabinets that pre-date the space age seems foolish. If you do decide to redo the cabinets later, which is probably a given, you will probably not be able to save the granite unless you are very, very careful. In my experience, lower cabinets and countertops don't come out gracefully. As for bemoaning the lack of artisans etc and how unfair it is they won't do the template until cabinets are level, that's not unfair at all. Read the OP's posts more carefully, he's doing it himself so the suppliers are not even getting the install business. I think they're commendable for stipulating that, although from their point of view, it's good business, otherwise, they template and cut countertop, Rob installs and screws from underneath within an inch of its life, then countertop undulates or cracks. Human nature being what it is, the customer may then complain the suppliers SHOULD have shimmed it or insisted on it being level etc. I think it's fair. Personally, unless the countertops are literally unusable I'd stick with them til I could afford to do the kitchen, I doubt very much it would add to the resale at all, and might make it look very half-baked. At the most, I'd spend a few hundred at most to half-update such an ancient kitchen. Granite on 50-yo cabinets just makes no sense to me....and I love granite....See MoreHow to Convert a Kitchen Wall Cabinet to a Base Cabinet
Comments (3)When you say "base" I think you mean a toekick or riser so the cabinet sits off the floor, no? If you made this from 2x stock, and have shimmed it level off the floor in both directions, and can secure the cabinet itself to at least 2 studs, there's really no reason to worry about fastening them together beyond a few finish nails. If you had a couple of 2 1/2" screws, you could screw through the floor of the cabinet and catch the base. If you were wrapping the base with molding, you could lip it slightly onto the cabinet trapping it. Casey...See Morehomebound
