question about farm house sink and soap stone

I am planning on having a farm house sink undermounted and soap stone counters. I was wondering, if I should ever need to replace this sink years from now, is it possible to do that when the farm house sink is undermounted without destroying the counters or the cabinet holding the sink. Is there anything I need to insure about the original install to make sure the sink is replacable later?

I doubt it. Most farmhouse sinks are scribed to fit in the cabinet base. Occasionally you do see them resting on a shelf however. Most also are very heavy and need to be supported by structural members inside the cabinet/cabinet frame.

Do you see yourself wanting to replace the sink later on, or are you afraid of damage? If it is the latter, I would use GW, etc. to research the most durable sink for your needs. If you purchase a quality sink, you shouldn't have issues later on.

Maybe some one will chime in with a "removeable" installation method, but as far as I know, the only type of sink that you can uninstall without disturbing other components is a drop in.

I guess I am worried about damage. I am planning on installing a 30" Rohl original shaw. What is the likelyhood of damage to that?

Also, I recently had my drain under my existing drop in sink unclogged and the work involved some sawing of pipes which caused the seal all around the drain to become loose and start leaking and the pipe needed to be resealed (or some other expensive magic plumbers perform). Anyway, it made me think about making sure sinks are repairable in the future since we are not planning on doing this again or moving.

Can I tag onto this thread the third option of a cast iron farmhouse (okay, so it's just 'farmhouse-looking') sink? I'm really nervous about all the installation horror stories, cracking from the disposal, etc. and I'm still considering the Kohler cast iron farmhouse sink.

So it was called PA soapstone but from Brazil??? I thought PA soapstone was from PA. Maybe it looks like the soapstone they used to mine in PA? I am leaning toward using Bucks County because there have been so many rave reviews here on the GW. I would prefer to use someone who only deals with soapstone rather than someone who does granite and soapstone and marble. My friend used Philadelphia Soapstone (they are in NJ just over the bridge) and had a great experience. I have yet to go to a yard and look but we need to do that soon! It seems like the soapstone is becoming harder to find. Very little still from the USA from what I understand. What price per square foot did you pay? If you don't mind my asking and still remember. I am trying to get an idea of the ballpark we might pay. I know it varies but a ball park would be a good place to start. My contractor said he thought about $150 sq. ft. (including installation).

I love mine. I wasn't going to get one because I don't like the one we have in our other home but the plumbing house sales lady said they are simple to refill by pouring the detergent in the top. Well I knew that didn't work very well with my other one so I still nixed the idea. Then I read here about the NeverMT and at the last minute decided to go with it. I am very glad I did. I use dawn and also use it to wash my hands. Love my soap dispenser and love my NeverMT.

it's calcatta gold and we got an incrediable deal: was listed at $28.00 sf and we got for $20.50 sf: it is called Callcatta Danby 3cm honed (had gold in it) streaks: so pretty: I think they had it way over priced. 43 sf kitchen: with demo of old countertops: $3590.00 (one slab of marble 108x54) she kept all of it: This lady spent 15K on stove, and DW!!! You have the same sink I installed! My parents have had it also for 6 years now. Fireclay is known to be extremely durable. The one caveat it to make sure that your plumber is experienced with these types of sinks, as overtighting can crack it (when installing the GD or drain pipe). If you had pipe or GD issues, there should be no reason that any of that being replaced or repaired should have an effect on the sink. I built my whole kitchen around this sink and my soapstone (I got a Rohl faucet too), and I probably spent at least 1/3 of my budget on those 3 things at I would do it again and again.

If the soapstone was affixed with dabs of silicone caulk, it can be pried free, maybe even w/o damage. If it was epoxied in (as recently was the case with a GW='ers install) then all bets are off. Silicone can be cut with a putty knife (Fein Tool with a spatula blade), and basically worked free. Hopefully any seams will be broken nicely, or be sawn out again w/ the Fein tool (multimaster, or knock-off equivalent)
Any existing fissures in the stone will quickly be revealed, however.
