Stove relocation questions

Hi,

I'm in the planning stages of a kitchen renovation and am considering changing the current U shaped layout to a galley along the 2 long walls. This would be to eliminate the corner base cabinets which are inefficient for storage.

I have a couple of concerns about moving the stove though. One is that it will be pretty much right next to the window. Is that bad in any way? The fan hood would have to look nice from the side because it won't have any cabinets to hide next to. The other concern is that on the non-window side of the stove, I will only have 12" or so of counter space. Is that bad?

Any advice would be appreciated.

You could always use a wall end panel, which is normally 3/4" thick, to hide the side of the vent closest to the window.

This arrangement is not "bad" but you have to decide if having only a 12" cabinet/counter on only one side of the range works for you. Normally, you would want to have adequate landing space, as well as base cabinet space for things like cookware and untensils, and or seasonings, etc. Especially since you say it will be a galley, which would mean that you would always have to turn around for everything.

Generally, thats not that efficient......

If you have sufficient space on the other side of the stove, you will be ok, but it is not ideal. I have the 12" now and it is not very useful. Another few inches would have made a difference.

BTW - we are extending and re-doing our kitchen, so I could have laid it out as I chose and I ended up with the work area as a galley and have another area nearby (a peninsula) for when I need to spread out and the normal size is not enough. I was mindful of trying to avoid corner cabinets and even worse, a corner sink. Our counters won't even need seams because one side has the sink in the middle and the stove is in the middle of the island. A galley can be laid out easily and is much better than an equal about of linear space on one long run. Everything is nearer and a simple pivot gets me to the sink area and fridge. In my current smaller kitchen, I have over 6 feet between my stove and sink with a dishdrain in the middle of just going in a straight line. If anything is dripping, it has a long way to go... It also makes emptying the pasta pot very dangerous. In our new layout it will be just over half the distance. Can't wait.

I would suggest waiting until fall when the bulbs slow their active growth. The bulbs should be busy now storing energy for their blooms next spring. Just be sure the plant them in well draining soil to avoid any problems with rot. They do prefer being on the dry side. And mulch them with something like straw that won't hold water, but will protect them from any winter chill. Good luck!

It depends on what type/size your birdhouse is if it would be suitable for other birds. Some of the wren houses are awfully small for a Tree Swallow or Bluebird to nest in. Bluebirds need a 1.5 inch hole, swallows prefer that too but can get in a smaller hole. Chickadees also prefer the 1.5 inch hole but can get in a 1 1/8 inch hole. A housewren will enter any size hole, not much deters them except keeping the nestboxes far away from brush and trees. House Sparrows can enter a 1 1/4 or larger hole, you would want to keep them from nesting in your birdhouse. A properly mounted nestbox is mounted on a slick metal pole with a predator baffle and at least 15-30 feet away from trees/fences/brush with no branches hanging over the box. Squirrels and or raccoons can and will get into nestboxes placed in/on trees or mounted on wooden posts. A metal plate on the front is to prevent woodpeckers from enlarging the hole. If the nestbox is mounted properly squirrels shouldn't be able to get to it to chew the opening. Depending on the variety the roots might be super big, might not be. Since they weren't in an optimum location the roots might be growing slow as well as the shrub so you might get lucky. Peonies aren't really hard plants, aren't really fussy, and you can easily dig them now and either replant in a better spot or in a pot--if a pot I'd suggest that you wait until they're out of the ground to decide on a size, they don't like to have their roots crowded like some. If you leave them potted I'd suggest that you leave them at least in part shade the rest of the year, although they're a sun plant the roots don't like to be overheated and they tend that way in pots. You could probably avoid that issue as well by double potting them--plant in a large nursery pot then put that pot in a slightly larger ceramic or clay type pot to act as insulation. As for overwintering it, they can take a freeze in a pot, what will kill them is freezing, thawing, freezing, thawing.....that repeated cycle will cause the roots to rot. You can either sink the nursery pot in the ground overwinter and they'll probably do just fine or put the whole thing in an unheated garage or storage shed, water until the first few inches are damp once a month or so until spring and replant then. Whenever you're planting them out in the spring when they're waking up they'll need the same consideration you'd give to any other perennial you're moving during it's growth period--extra water and shade for several weeks to let them settle in, will also need more water than typical during the rest of the growing season and summer. This isn't necessary if you plant them out in fall when they're going dormant, also they should be divided in the fall, hence the advice to always plant them in the fall.

[I'm not a pro] Are you using the Nook? You don't seem to have it in your updated plan. If you're not using it - perhaps will be easier and more cost-effective to re-configure the existing kitchen so that it uses the space more efficiently? You won't need to move the stove, and plumbing may not be a huge issue if you're not directly on a slab (i.e. you have crawlspace / basement).

Thanks for the responses.

I might be able to push the counter space on the right of my stove (non window side) to 15". On the left side (window side) I'll have about 55" or so of counter space with pot drawers etc below so plenty of room for "stuff".

I think the current plan is to put in a chimney style hood and forego the uppers over the fan and do some sort of dramatic backsplash all the way to the ceiling.

I'm going to put together a proper layout with sketches and all that and start a "critique my layout" thread. Just wanted to see if I was way off with my stove and window idea.

Dan, as someone who has their slide in range near (4" from) the window, in a galley kitchen, let me tell you.. Dianlo is right! Add an end panel! You may feel boxed in for a while til you get used to the window light not reaching the stove, but cleaning the glass, frame of the window, and what ever window treatments you have gets old after a while.

Our situation is less than ideal as we don't have a range hood at the moment (kitchen will be revamped when $$ becomes less tight around here), but I am planning on installing a panel temporarily til then. I know that you will still need to clean the panel from splashes etc, but it's far easier on a flat simple surface!

Good luck with your plans and layout! Right now we're stuck with the new fridge in the corner, stove (electric) beside it, window with 4' counter top, then end wall, with yet another window in the end. It will be nice to be at your stage of planning on changes to that scenario!
