Can a new counter top be installed w/o replacng tile backsplash?
Comments (6)The tiled backsplash usually sits just off the countertop by an 1/8th inch or so and the gap is caulked. The caulk can be cut away and the countertop should be able to be removed without damaging the backsplash. That's in a perfect world. Some installers set the bottom course of tile right on the countertop. Less clearance. Depending on how the countertop is attached to the cabinets below, that can affect things. The shape of the counter. A straight run or and "L" shaped? Are the ends open or captured? How the countertop is constructed? A slab of stone? Or a tiled-in mud bed? Sometimes the countertop needs to be sectioned out in pieces. In general, the backsplash can usually be preserved, but getting the countertop out might be ugly, especially if it's piece by piece. So..."it depends"....See MoreBacksplash before countertop installation?
Comments (20)I want to install a granite counter to replace my existing laminate. I have a stone and glass backsplash I really want to keep. My laminate in 3/4 inch so the granite will be thicker which creates a dilemma with tbe tiled backsplash. My choices are to remove a row of time or butt the granite up to the tile. My tile guy was less than thrilled with cutting tile out as the grout lines are so thin, about 1/16. The granite guy said ideally they don't want to measure off a tile wall or butt to tile but feels because my grout lines are so thin that it won't even be noticeable after grouting/caulking to anyone other than us because we know its like that. Any suggestions or thoughts? Spending $$ on granite I really want it to look beautiful, I don't want it in anyway to look half A$$. Anyone done the butting granite to tile backsplash and have pics to share....See MoreNeed input: gap at end of counter before adding backsplash
Comments (10)Hi a2gemini, Holy cow--your first counter actually avalanched on the way to your house?! Egads, that must have been an awful feeling. I'm glad that you had a great job after that! I live in northern Massachusetts. From all of my reading of GW, I should have known better than to go with the stone guys that we ended up with. It was one of the areas of the project where I got too tired of wrangling with other members of the family and took the path of least resistance. (And while I don't normally take that path, at the time, I was too exhausted to argue that we should look for another estimate/opinion on which stone contractor to go with. As my brother says "sometimes my life is just a lesson to others of what *not* to do!") --Lee...See MoreWall cabinet distance from counter to avoid cutting backsplash tiles?
Comments (27)I have posted a picture that shows the layout, and sorry I didn't think of that earlier. The picture shows why I asked the question. I have 9' ceilings, with nothing at the top to align anything with. The kitchen is a U and the stove is centered on the "bottom" of the U. The wall cabinets do not go over to the hood on the back wall. I am not sure yet how high the tiles will go by the stove, but I want them to line up all the way around. So if I can adjust the height by an inch or so, I am good with that! Thanks to everyone who graciously took of their valuable time to give me such good suggestions....See MoreStacey Collins
