I don't think it would look weird, but, we are also replacing all our doors (boy they add up, don't they?), and found it far more economical to deal directly with a door company.

In fact, we got most of our mouldings there too, also at a better price than the box stores.

I'd suggest comparing prices there, and maybe you could get solid doors in a style more compatible at a much better price. I have a personal bias against the six panel doors that you see 'everywhere', so for me it was a priority- but it all depends on what you like. Since the vast majority of houses seem to have those doors, you'll definitely fit in.

As long as you aren't living in an actual Craftsman bungalow, and assuming you don't go over-the-top in your kitchen with every detail specific to that particular style (and then nowhere else), it will look fine.

I am building a house with Shaker cabinets. The house is a pseudo Craftsman/Four Square style (don't ask me...it's the builder's verbiage). They specified Jeld-Wen Rockport doors (five panel) so they couldn't have been that expensive, but the truth is, I don't know what they cost.

They are "molded" doors and when I saw them at the lumber yard, I did not like them. I am a wood door snob, I guess. ;-) But, now that they are in the house and painted, I have to admit, they are fine.

I understand how you feel about the usual 6-panel doors being out of sync with the Shaker style cabs. That would bother me too, probably. In my last house I had Supa doors with a single panel "E" Series. Very clean and simple, much like Shaker doors.

maybe you could change out the doors over time, as you can afford the style you like. That was what we had planed in the last house, but we ended up moving with a heck of a lot of hollow core doors still in place. Oh well...had to give the buyers something to do!

Not sure where you live, but you may want to try architectural salvage yards. Some of these places are grossly overpriced, but doors are so readily available. You could pick a common style and find them from different sources. Look on ebay also, sometimes you'll find large quantities from a hotel, school... We've purchased solid wood five panel doors for as little as $25. It may not be worth all the hassle (paint, hardware, etc.) but if you come across just the perfect ones...

I had the same dilemma with my cabinets and doors. I put in shaker style cabinets and at the very end of the redo, I had three doors to deal with at the far, back end of the kitchen -- powder room, newly built second pantry/closet and basement. At first I wanted a Shaker style door to go with the cabinets but the prices were too high and I was too drained, in every way by that point. I don't mind 6 panel doors at all especially since I had ugly old slab doors before. Since my kitchen is not Shaker style or Craftsman style but more eclectic-old-and-new I went with the 6 panel doors. And then I added glass door knobs :) And the doors are painted white :)
And I likey! :) I'd have loved Shaker doors, but I'm happy with what I did.
As another poster said as long as your home isn't dedicated completely to that one style, you can do a door that isn't Shaker.

It may depend on whether you're painting or staining the doors -- paint goes a long way to blur the dissimilarities in style.

If your goal is to achieve a historical look, I'd second the idea to check out all your local resources for architectural salvage, building re-use stores, etc. (If there's a local Habitat for Humanity Restore, they usually have amazing deals on doors.) I was lucky enough to get new fir bungalow-style doors for a song at a local outfit who sell remainders and project leftovers. Google around to see what's out there in your area. (And if you're anywhere near mid-coast Maine, give me a shout and I'll point you to the amazing source, they still have a few hundred doors last I checked.)

You might also want to hold off a little bit? Doors do make a huge impact, and you could choose the style you most want at a reputable door dealer (I got Rogue Valley doors and am delighted with my luck at the quality), then replace one at a time over the next year or two as you can afford them?

But I don't think traditional Victorian 6-panel would be totally out of place if that's the way you choose to go.
