You have to slice out the center panel, remove the ledtover bits at the edge, THEN rout a notch out of the back of the frame to hold the glass.

It might be easier to buy or build new doors that are routed in the back to hold glass.

Love the green, taupe and black, it looks awesome and your kitchen plans will be sooooo fun!!!

I am not a cabinet expert, but I have heard that it is better to get cabinet doors made with glass in them as opposed to trying to construct the glass fronts from current doors. You can always use your current doors in another room (laundry, garage, office, etc.)

As far as which cabinets. I would do uppers...the one to the left of the the hood and the ones to the right of the hood all the way around to and on the other side of the window too. If you have a pantry, you might want to make that a glass door too.

The two over the peninsula are off by themselves. They might be easier to replace with "slightly" different doors.

I am having glass put into 2 of my cabinets. I took them to a custom cabinet maker for the inner panels to be routed out. They were $50 each.

The glass shop recommended the cabinet maker and they did a great job.

Years ago I had some cabinets done by a carpenter then he glued the glass in for me. They looked great and my friend who lived next door said they are still there 15 years later.
It can be done easily.

As for which cabinets to do...I'd think hard about what you want to put where, for convenience sake and then see if the ones with the most attractive items would like right with glass.

For example, I'm thinking your DW, assuming you have one, is either to the right of the sink or in the peninsula? If so the two cabinets above the peninsula might be a good place for glass fronts, with your dishes and glassware showing.

Over the range is another option, as this is probably a somewhat less convenient cabinet and could be used mostly for decorative, pretty objects.

I love your dining room...especially the pop of green with the chairs. What made you think of that color? I would never have thought of that combo.

We're finalizing our house design & I came up with that very question. I asked someone from here about glass door placement. She mentioned that near the stove might show the dirt/grease buildup more but again, it's dependent on how much you're willing to clean.

I'm assuming the kitchen entry is by the fridge? Maybe you can make the cabinets by the peninsula & on the other side of the sink glass to 'open' it up more since that's the first thing you see when you walk into the kitchen.

Thanks everyone! I have been cleaning out the cabinets since the painter is coming on Wednesday. I put all of our liquor bottles, wine glasses and pint glasses in the two cabinets above the stove. I am thinking that won't look bad being exposed with the glass. Then the corner cabinet is where I keep my dishes and vases. So if I did those three cabinets in glass, it wouldn't eat up into our storage space too much. But then I was thinking, would that look unbalanced - 3 glass cabinets on one side and the other side (the two that are kind of alone) are solid white?

I found a couple websites that give step-by-step instructions so I think I'm going to convince my hubby to do it. I will also be visiting the glass company on Monday and I will see what they say.

Thanks, melaska & vampiressrn :) I just love that color green and since the rest of the house I tried to keep neutral with black, white and taupe, I thought I'd use that as the pop of color. Chairs are from Target, they look cute and they are easy for the kids to pull in/out but the finish is already getting scratched off in a lot of places from the buttons, buckles on the kids pants and stuff so I don't know how long they'll last :(

Wow...$50 a door to transform to a glass door...that is not a bad price. I have a whole wall of glass cabinet doors and love them. We are all creatures of habit, so if you get in the practice of putting certain items in the usual spots, you can keep your cupboards looking neat. Mine are kind of messy now, but people comment about how neat they look...but I think that is because I have a display of similarly colored items in them...think that helps. You can also display some items in that great green and black/white. LUV THE BROOM!!!!!

Bummer about the scratches on the chairs, but at least you know what color to use if you ever need to replace them.

I agree with others about the cabs by the peninsula being the best candidates. They would help extend the window visually and seem to be the ones that would balance best.

Hmmm....so, do you think just the two cabinets above the peninsula or those along with the corner cabinet on the other side?

ktgrirl10: I think the concern about the above range cabinets is spatters and grease. If you OTR hood works well and you use it, however, that shouldn't be a problem. And if that's a convenient place for you to put items that wouldn't look bad behind glass, go ahead and do it. The corner cabinet is a good idea as well. As for the peninsula cabinets, visually, I think it would look good to have them glass....it would make it look less heavy over the peninsula. So if you can afford to lose that much hidden space, I'd do all of those.

I vote for the corner and the peninsula cabinets. What about the interiors of these cabinets? Are you going to be able to get by without having them finished to match the exteriors? Whenever I order glass doors for a client I always specify a finished interior. You may consider painting the insides of these cabinets white to match. I also think that you'd be better off ordering new doors for the glass. In my experience, although it sounds easy, they can be tricky to retrofit.

New doors are probably less than you think too - extra doors for our style from are cabinet maker are between $25 and $55.

I'd do glass on the corner and pennisula too.

Have you thought about a thick crown molding over your cabinets? It might make the soffit look less imposing.

Ok, I think I have decided. I am going to do the two over the peninsula, the corner cabinet and the one to the left of the stove.
I went to two glass companies today and one told me between $50-$80 per piece and the other said around $40. Both were estimates on the same type of glass - reed.
I also went to a cabinet company and he said it would be about $25 per cabinet to take out the center and router an edge or lip that the glass can sit on. He did show me on one of the cabinets exactly how he would do it so now I am going to recite that info to my hubby so we can have it for free! Fingers crossed it works out. Thanks everyone for your help!
@Brittu - funny you say that, we are actually going to be putting in crown molding tomorrow afternoon before the painter comes!

One more thing! Now I cannot decide which style of reeded glass I like better. The glass company had a wider style and then one with thinner lines closer together. Don't know the measurements on them...
