integrated LG dishwasher sticks out beyond countertop, even

We had to replace our Maytag dishwasher; the latch/handle and electronic panel was cracking and finally broke.

The LG fully integrated dishwasher that took its place is in place but the guys didn't attach it to anything. (They got all wrapped up in solving a tricky electrical problem.)

The front of the dishwasher sticks out well beyond the cabinetry, and beyond the countertop itself. However, the frame of the dishwasher opening is flush with the cabinet frame.

(I can't push it farther back, though--even though it's not attached, it won't budge at all.)

Is this normal? It looks really funny, it's annoying, and it's going to be in the way.

I thought the point of an integrated dishwasher is that it would be flush with the cabinet-door fronts. Am I wrong?

Any pics you can send me to? The LG site doesn't show it installed. Just stand-alone silhouetted.

We have to have them come back and screw it into place, but i want to know what I can ask for in terms of positioning.

Pull it back out and figure out why it's sticking out. What is your cabinet depth? Where is the electrical and plumbing for the DW? If you have shallower than standard cabinet depths like many older home, a regular full sized DW can stick out. If the plumbing or electrical connections are located in the way, the DW can stick out. LG DWs are fully encased in boxes, rather than being just the internal DW box with the motor stuck on as an afterthought. Being fully encased is one of the reasons that they are so quiet. But, it also means that they can't "smush" things to one side or the other. They have a specific set of parameters that must be met for drain routing and electrical, and sometimes, things need to be modified in your cabinetry for them to be able to fit correctly. This is all in the installation instructions tht you and your installers need to read and understand. It may require additional cabinet or drain modification on your part to have your DW fit correctly.

I'm sorry you are experiencing this. When we were looking for a DW to replace our broken Whirlpool last winter, I found that American made DWs made to accept a panel were to deep (front to back) to remain flush with the cabinet run once the wooden panel was installed. I was advised to buy a Meile. The interior is noticably smaller, the front to back depth is shorter by about 2" (as I recall). Since I wanted to biggest interior I could find (family of nine), I purchased a SS KitchenAid and just gave up on the integrated look. We did not have the time to wait for the panel, this was during the holidays and we just needed a DW, not another project.

That being said, if I had more time, I would have done an integrated DW and if necessary, I would have removed the sheet rock from behind the DW to create a larger space to accommodate the door. Perhaps you can take measurements and figure out if you can remove drywall and studs (you would need to create horizontal sills in the walls if you remove a stud, or maybe your could simply turn the stud 180 degrees within the cavity). Or maybe taking out the drywall would be enough. I don't think it would affect any of the electrical or plumbing, but might make the sound level rise.

Tally, I hope this doesn't become a large project for you. What does the cabinet maker who made to door panel think? Can you return the DW if need be or is that a final sale?

PS Still using the MS PTouch regularly and so thankful for it!

Correct ! but you simply stated that any brand would be fine and went out of your way to promote the KA as an acceptable solution - when in fact it is not for the look the majority of people are after when they want a disappearing DW. This is not simply a case of foreign vs. domestic cabinetry or the depth of the Euro's being less. The N.A. standard carcass depth is 24" Period! Add to that the typical door of 3/4" and the KA simply WILL NOT WORK in that depth if one want to maintain a constant plane across the run of cabinets! I won't even go into trying to integrate a KA into framed inset cabinetry. It ain't pretty. "Miele's DW's may be easier to seat flush in a 24" cabinet, but their warming drawer doesn't. " Correct again! They did a piss poor job of implementing this product, and there are several better choice out there. but........................this discussion isn't about warming drawers or Miele! I could list you a dozen products in a minute or two that fail miserably in the marketplace, so what ??? "For the custom handle, any custom panel appliance will work. For flush installation, read the installation instructions to know the depth requirements!" Wow, what a revelation, thanks for playing. hey dodge - I TOTALLY disagree with you re: KA and Miele having the same quality - especially in DWs. KA has been steadily going downhill in quality the last decade and especially in the last 5 years. KA DWs of the 60's and 70's were very very good. Some of the early 80's gear was still top drawer too. Since Hobart's divestiture of the division things have not been as solid. This is also from personal experience, and I guarantee you I have, see in the field , and go through a lot more DW's than 99.9% of the public. Leaving your marketing bias out of it, you actually think KA's pumps, seals, racks, latches, stainless steel , fit and finish , and warranty are equal to Miele's ???

I've had an upright freezer for about 15 years, and only used the freezer in my old refrigerator for ice cube trays and stale bread for croutons, crumbs or pudding. In my previous house the freezer was in the laundry, which was a similar configuration to a mudroom, without the mud. It was great. In my current house, it was in the kitchen proper, but on the outside of the G shaped cook area. It was great. In my new kitchen, I have the Miele 30" all fridge and all freezer next to each other. I'm not in yet, but it seems great. The old freezer is going in the garage downstairs, for holding stock, spaghetti sauce, and other high volume, low turnover stuff. That doesn't seem great, but I don't have anywhere better to put it. It's a marvelous freezer. Re integrated: You don't want a bit of stainless poking out of it. If it's purposeful stainless, like a frame, or handle, that's fine. You do not want to be seeing the unit itself, however. There will be a little sight of the gaskets through the cracks, and the color you see on opening, but that's another story. With the Miele coolers there's white plastic trim. My Marvel fridge drawers came with an option of white or black for the unit. The toekick vent on that is white on the white one. The Viking panel ready DW is black and came with a black toekick panel with the light on it. My GC and tile setter discussed redoing it in tile but decided instead to paint it. The Monogram warming drawer is stainless. I don't get excited over what shows in the cracks. There's a certain point where you have to just accept things as they are. But when you have your units installed, your integrated fronts should be flush with the rest of your cabinetry. Make sure your cabinet people understand the specs of your appliances going in, and account for them. They may want you to have the appliances on site so they can be sure of the In Real Life measurements. Mine wanted the DW, cooktop and fridge drawers while they were installing the cabinets, but not the fridge/freezer or ovens. So then they had to delay oven installation while the cabinet maker came back and fixed the opening which was a teeny tad small on the front frame. The specs are very available online. Miele tells you very clearly that the integrated depth is 25", for instance.

I have about a half an inch of space on the left and right side of the dishwasher and a full two inches of clearance above. Our Excella is pretty dead sounding. Ironically, one of the "sound isolation" comments I encountered was yours! :) Mando, I won't deny for a second that my machine went from a not-a-quiet machine to a quiet-machine (although by no means dead silent but perhaps at the ambient noise level of our house such as the fridge) the moment we turned the DW legs to reduce the clearance on the top. However, your own experience aside, nominal performance will beg the nominal installation specs and that there are decent odds that your experience won't transport. For instance, the only reason I thought to close the gap was because someone had posted here asking why their new Miele Optima (if I recall right - it was about a year and a half ago) was being noisy. In the course of trouble-shooting clearances were mentioned, pictures requested and supplied and in addition to some small gaps to the side, the 1" gap at the top was labeled the culprit by the friendly folks here diagnosing the trouble. Well, I thought I'd take a look at my DW clearance on top, noticed that ours was even bigger, closed that and voila my problem was solved. The person who had complained about their DW didn't post back at least while I was tracking their thread so I don't know if that resolved their problem. Regardless, the gap was flagged as a problem installation for the posters' (Miele) dishwasher - so clearly there is a correlation between installation and (acoustic) performance - or at least, there used to be said correlation 1.5 years ago. :-) There are other reasons not to assume too much performance invariance to the manufacturer's installation specs but in the interest of brevity I shan't get into it. So, if that is what you are suggesting in the last post, I'll redouble my objection :-) Finally, I hear you on full loads and I even believe it as I have had sub-whisper quiet runs in my DW when it was very full, but in my case, I guess I have to contend myself with knowing I probably can't get there. As it is, I do a load every 4-6 days. (I often have stuff growing on my dishes by the time I do the load!) The DW is not always full by that 4-6 day mark either but I simply can't bring myself to put off doing dishes beyond that window. Perhaps I'll have to reconcile myself to non-whisper quiet operation when it and I are working although at this point I really don't feel especially put upon because it is so soft.

I'm not bashing her. I am stating simple FACT based on the information she provided, and some of it much later in the thread. A "nice" kitchen pro btw......one respectful of her resources ? Would have advised " Tops and a new fridge won't solve your problem UNLESS....... and there you are back at resources. You think that's mean or not "Nice"? Not nice is spending hard earned money to get no improvement and be STUCK with function and looks you do not like. It is not a designers job to make a client feel good with bad solutions. A designer feels good, when a client is THRILLED, to the extent of what is possible within their home and within their budget. Therefore? I'd have said at the very least, "sorry, you cant have THAT fridge, and here is WHY.. Design isn't a little " love fest ooohhh and ahhhh " ........THAT comes when you enjoy YOUR result. "So sorry this happened to you?" Yeah. No kidding. Nothing just "happens", until it does and it's a result of missing information via bad advice, or no advice, almost..... always. .

We're not going with the cabinet door--we're going to stick with the factory white. So I don't have the extra depth of the wood to deal with.

I can't take out the drywall--my walls are solid plaster brick, and they're only about 2.5 inches thick. But there may be some sort of fitting in the way--that's interesting to hear about the LG's being in a big box.

I didn't see what's in the back there, but when the electricians come to look at our circuit, I'm going to have DH check and see what might be blocking it.

We like the dishwasher, so we don't want to return it (and we've used it, so maybe we can't. I don't know.

The cabinets are full depth--and the countertop is 26" deep, so the dishwasher *ought* to fit. Then again, I think we have some piping that runs across the back, and if the LG is a big box, we may be in trouble.
