Grouting Travertine without filling holes??

I am thinking about using a 4x4 tumbled travertine tile for my backsplash. It does not have many holes and pits, but I would like to keep the ones it does have. I like the look of them unfilled. How is this done when grouting? I have grouted before, but always used a rubber float to pull the grout across the face of the tile. I am assuming I can't do that if I want to keep these pits open? Thanks....
