Granite backsplash ONLY over stove area

Hi,

Wonder if anyone has photos of granite backsplash only over the stove area with tile elsewhere (on either sides)?

I found a wild granite and it may be too fussy (and too expensive) to do over the entire backsplash. I was wondering if anyone just used a slab behind the stove only.

Photos or ideas please.

Here is ours. We used one of the more interesting sections behind the cooktop. It's sort of like having a piece of artwork behind the cooktop :). It also has the bonus of being very easy to clean after cooking. The polished finish makes it hard to photograph though.

Wow, that's beautiful. The tile is perfect, understated. Is it ceramic tile? Also, interesting way to finish the sides since the granite is thicker than the tile. How did you finish the sides of the granite? Who provided the matching wood?

Here's a pic if that helps: From Kitchen Backsplash The granite will be in the open area (where the stove normally sits). It will only extend to just under the cabs as the micro-hood (yeah I know...) will be above it.

cigi, in our last house the previous owner installed tumbled marble in a mauvish tone which IMO looked awful with the St Cecilia granite. Even though the tile was expensive, I tore them off and left the 4" granite backsplash, patched and painted the rest of the wall. The sink was the only working area as the cooktop was on the island. No problem with water as I used BM Aura, but Pittsburgh Paint's Manor Hall Timeless is just as good with a more flat look and lifetime warranty. I'm pondering the issue for my current redo. In various houses I've had paint, wallpaper, white tile with abalone inserts, plain white tile. Right now I'm weighing white tile with a beautiful insert, just paint with no granite backsplash since this area has only a counter but no cooking/wet functions, paint with granite backsplash, or a simple glass tile backsplash with listello over it a la Chinchette. I'm attaching a photo from Chinchette's beautiful kitchen (hope she doesn't mind seeing hers cited as a great example) which shows the last option. In any event, I echo others' advice to not worry about that decision immediately unless you absolutely love a certain look. Just use good paint. Here is a link that might be useful:

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Just my opinion.

Thanks :). I LOVE the granite you are considering. I know I've seen other kitchens on this forum with granite behind the cooktop and a different finishing option where the granite transitions to the tile, but my mind is drawing a blank right now.

Our tiles are 24x4 solid color porcelain tiles (Casa Dolce Casa Neutra Tortorafrom the Casamood collection). We used a design/build firm and their cabinet maker also made the beams. The designers tried to give us the feel of a hearth-look cooking area without actually having cabinets or sides interfere with the countertop, which is how we ended up with the beams framing the granite. The granite is actually also bumped out from the wall in addition to the granite thickness. {{!gwi}}From kitchen remodel

The side beams are sort of L shaped and were then scribed to fit around the granite and vent. It seemed like a rather labor intensive way to do it, but it turned out nice :). I was a little concerned about having wood taht close to the cooktop, but it hasn't been an issue with the way I cook. Generally, anything I cook with high heat is on the center burner

melanie... the more I think about it and see those pics, the better I like this idea for your beautiful granite. How cool would it be if you could have the fabricators cut some of the slab into 12x12 tile to put on a diagonal for the backsplash. Even a straight spectacular part of the slab (I would save the most outrageously beautiful part for behind the stove) then take whatever understated tile you choose; put it vertical to frame out the slab then continue elsewhere horizontal. (this is assuming you choose something that is like a 4x8 or so. )
