Looking for a black/gray matte countertop
Comments (6)I don't know why you didn't get more help with this, threegraces. Thanks Autumn.4 for the compliment. The kodiak brown doesn't look brown at all, but it has a brown undertone. Some other dark granites I looked at had more of a blue undertone in comparison. Steele gray is one of the least expensive granites. I put it in my basement and I really like it. I'd like it better honed, I think, but that wasn't an option from the fabricator I worked with. I'm not a big fan of polished granite, but I like this one polished. I got mine through Ikea so I could get 15% off by spending a certain amount on kitchen stuff. I've also seen it at Home Depot and it is one of their least expensive options. Incidentally, Home Depot and Ikea around here (SW Ohio) use the same fabricator, and they did a fantastic job. I liked them better than my main kitchen fabricator, but it was a small job and not tricky at all. Call a few granite yards and see what options they have in a black or dark gray with a honed or leathered finish. I recall liking Atlantic Black quite a bit and it was available in both finishes. Everything I looked at was well under $100 installed, but that may be regional. My kodiak brown leather (70 sq ft with two sink cutouts) was about $65/sq ft installed. My steel gray (with one sink cutout) was closer to $45/sq ft installed. Good luck with the kitchen and the baby!...See Morehoned or matte countertop suggestions
Comments (7)Why thanks Angie!! Here's a pic of it brand new and oiled: And here's one I just took to show you it unoiled and after a year of major abuse. I probably haven't oiled it in a month or so and I can guarantee you I an a very frequent cook/baker who puts screaming hot pans directly on the soapstone. We love it both ways and every way in between. I usually oil it when we're having people over and I marvel at the sea glass colored inclusions. They pop more when waxed. Then as it fades I start thinking... no... I like it this way best. When faded awhile, the green isn't as vibrant but all these mica like inclusions glimmer. It reminds me of an old pair of faded stonewashed jeans. It is such an amazing counter surface. ESPECIALLY, for someone like me who does not approach cooking tasks delicately....See Morelaminate countertops - matte or shiny? light or dark?
Comments (36)desertsteph ~ Yep, I did them on-site. This was the second time I've re-laminated them in 10 years. Our original choice turned out to be (ahem) less-than-expected, to say the least. At the time they were delivered for installation, DH said that I should "live with them for a while" and if, in a few years, I still didn't like them I could replace them. After three looong years I decided it was time but I didn't want to rip out a perfectly good countertop/base or pay the $$$ when they were only three years old. That's when I decided to tackle the job. After much research and speaking to people in the trades is when I took the plunge. I have to say the first time it was definitely nerve wracking but the seconfd time was much less stressful. The first time I re-did them I chose a solid laminate from Wilsonart called, aptly, "Port". Here's a pic mid-process. Notice the fugly original counters to the right of the stove. Definitely not what I ecpected them to look like. I admit the mistake was mine because there's no way anyone can tell what a whole counter will look like when all you jhave is a tiny little sample chip. Duh. The problem with the red counters was twofold ~ because they were a solid with no texture or pattern, they showed every scratch. Because they were red, they faded quite quickly in the bright sun. So that's my story ;o) My experience has been that, unless the countertop is very light, I would stay away from a solid color laminate countertop with no pattern or texture. Comments (21)Our honed absolute black granite sample shows fingerprints. However, we also have a leathered sample that is a dream and people like it a lot. Here is a clip from Kitchenintuitions.com Leathered: This finish adds texture to the surface. Additionally, it closes the pores (compared to honing) and retains the color better than honing. While a leathered finish has a sheen to it, it is nowhere near as reflective as a polished surface. A good analogy would be that a leathered finish is like a matte finish on a photograph whereas a polished surface is like a glossy photograph. Please note that the amount of texture will vary from stone to stone and some stones will not leather (especially extremely uniform materials). Leathering is preferred to honing for blacks and other very dark materials. For example the amount of texture on Absolute Black is minimal and very fine grained, and the finish is much more uniform than honing Absolute Black. Leathering starts with a honed surface and adds texture, and is a completely different process than river washed...See Morejackson2348
