Sarah, the picture is kinda' small. Is there any way that you can make it larger?

BTW...for 3 stools you really should have 72" (24" per stool).

I'm a little confused. The small pic may be contributing to my confusion so ignore my ramblings if they don't make sense.

What side of the island were you planning on putting the stools? It looks like putting the island on an angle would allow for more stool space because the back side would be curved and a curved line between two points is always longer than a straight one.

What kind of prep were you planning on doing on the island? It seems like a long walk to the range for prep space.

The island doesn't even look like it's in the kitchen- not a useful prep space at all. Did you consider any penninsula layouts? That may be a better way to get prep space as well as kid space.

Unfortunatley I can't make it larger until I get back home to get to original file...sorry.

buehl - I did read that 24" was the space for seating. My brother has an island that is 36" x 60" and has 3 small stools that fit fine for this kids, might be a tight squeeze for adults though so that's a good point.

laxsupermom - We were planning on putting the stools on the outside looking into the kitchen. The layout shows 2 36" cabinets put together at the angle. Using the 24" seat space that puts enough room for 1 seat at each cabinet and no room for a third seat in the middle since it's at a point.

The "point" that comes out is what makes me think it's not a good idea since you lose that seat space. I wonder if it were a straight run of 60" or 72" that it would make more stool space.

The island is more of a hangout spot for the kids in between the mudroom/entrance and the kitchen and is secondly another prep area.

alku50 - We can't put a peninsula right there because the door to the backyard is right there and there isn't enough room for a walkway.

Instead of a point, it looks to me like you could angle the outside edge of the center section...kind of cut it across to make third angle on the outside/seating side. Come in about 2 ft from each end, then angle across to join the original 2 angles, making a flat spot in the center for a 3rd person. (Does that make sense?) Or round the overhang. Working inside the angle would be good for one person...like being surrounded by counter.

Is this just a rough idea, since it really doesn't match/or is parallel with the wall angle? It looks like it will put stools and seated people right in the middle of a pretty busy traffic area...Lots of doorways into that spot.

It seems you are bringing attention to the angle of the wall by following it with the perimeter cabinets, so it also seems like you should do something that coordinates with it in the island...If not an angled island, set at an angle or something. If you want a plain, rectangular island, I'd eliminate the cabinet that angles around the corner on the wall, or keep it running in a straight line, even though the wall goes back.

I worked with a few ideas, but this is the only one I liked. I don't think it'll work to have 2 equally sized cabinets for the island, because of aisle spacing and trying to stay consistent with the wall angle. But a 2 ft cabinet and a 4 ft cabinet would give you, generously, the 3 seating spaces you wanted. On the end you could either have an overhang, as shown, or run cabinet all the way to the end if a seat there would be in the way.

I projected lines from the wall behind the fridge and the end cabinet on the sink wall so that the edges of the island line up with the other planned cabinets.

We're using IKEA cabinets so it would have to be a 24" and a 36" instead of a 24" and 48" (they don't have 48").

I like what rhome proposed -- it seems to balance the space and make better use of it -- and it does follow that line of the wall rather than fight it. You can use 2 24" cabinets instead of a 48" -- that'[s easy and might function better there than one large cabinet, especially if you put in some drawers.

Lascatx is right. I didn't actually mean a 48" cabinet, but rather, 48" of cabinet in whatever configuration suits you. And, what I've shown here would actually be a 24" and a 36", if you wanted to have the end overhang.

My drawing is only eye-balled, rather than exactly to scale, and you'd want to figure it exactly to scale to figure out the actual sizes to make this work.

I see that only part of one person's back would be toward the living room. If you don't like that, though, you could put a cabinet facing the living room on that section and only have seating on the angled portion...Or eliminate the smaller section and go back to a rectangle, but then it's really disjointed from the kitchen. I don't think it would look right to do the island, especially the angle, if it didn't match and line up with the wall angle. In the first plan, the angles are offset from one another, as well as being at different angles, and I think that would look odd...like you meant to match and 'missed.'

I wasn't thinking about the diner's orientation, but about traffic to/from the basement, the door swing and getting old sofas to and from the basement. Maybe you have another entrance to the basement?

I don't disagree with what rhome said at all about the angles. I somewhat wanted to draw a bar on the straight perpendicular line attached to the slanted wall and then arc around to the angle matching the wall, but it reminded me of a tiki bar and things sporting little pink umbrellas and I'm supposed to be workin'.

Another idea. Can't say I prefer it, but thought I'd throw it out here. The extended counter from the fridge wall will make a shortened island feel less disconnected, allow a worker to face the living room, and be a bit of a block so the view from the living room isn't directly at the sink.

Instead of the island, a counter height table with 4 chairs might be fun...Then the counter extension from the fridge wall wouldn't be necessary, I don't think.

I should also point out that the dining table is on the other end of the kitchen. This island is a casual spot for mostly the kids to hang out.

I like the table idea. It reminds me of a pub table variation I saw at Macy's that had bookcase ends and 4 stools. With those bookcases, you could use baskets to hold the kid stuff as well as some cookbooks or whatever you wanted. It could be a homework, games, craft and extra dining area. And it never hurts to have a flexible space for extra dining when entertaining.
