Pls show me your granite seam thru the sink!

My fabricator is proposing to have one granite seam through the middle of the sink. How will this look? Is it noticeable? I'd love for somebody to show me pictures of theirs!

Thanks! My fabricator is proposing the seam right in the middle. I'm worried about how much I'll see the seam and whether this will interfere with the sink hole. Anybody else want to share their pix?

Hi Cairnqueen, My seams were not at the sink. I know this is common. I think my installer wanted to do something artistic with the pattern and movement of my stone. Seams at the sink are perfectly fine and I have seen it done here on GW. I would not worry too much. The important things is are the seams nicely closed with a tiny almost insignificant space. Here is a picture of mine... Can you see the seam? It is almost invisible. This below is NOT my seam but I love this image to explain seams for those thinking about granite. "When searching for accurate information regarding natural stone countertops the ONLY reliable source is https://www.naturalstoneinstitute.org/ The WORST place to place a seam is directly over a dishwasher." Sarah: Let me direct your attention to the Natural Stone Institute's Detail of Spline Joint Reinforcement drawing 17-D-4 please. Page 14. This is a terrible detail. The last thing you want in a sink seam is a joint that is NOT designed to fail. If the house settles or a top gets out of plane, you want a joint that fails and can be easily remade, not a joint that's going to blow the top of the rail off. Not to mention when Bubba runs out of stainless steel washers and installs one that rusts and blows the countertop apart. As a countertop repairperson with 30 years experience, I have brought this poor detail to their attention to no avail. If you can avoid a seam over a dishwasher, fine, but there is no reason to not make a seam over a modern well-insulated dishwasher. Epoxy a stainless steel cleat under the seam and forget it if it makes you feel better, but I wouldn't bother. The Natural Stone Institute is a fine organization, but they're not Gods. Just men who make mistakes like the rest of us. This sink seam has failed properly. It may have not had the NSI's detail been followed. Would you rather look at this nice do-over or a repaired jagged crack at the end of the cutout or a blowout repair?

Patches: Yes, very handy that the soap dispenser can put soap in either sink with this set up. However, it looks like you'd HAVE TO use the pulldown on the faucet to fill the big sink or fill a pot sitting in the big sink. The "reach" of the faucet spigot only comes to the top of the sink bridge. Is that a good thing? Doesn't look so handy from my photo view of this set up.

jasdip, that's exactly what our cab designer and KD said but it's good to hear from someone who's had this set-up. Thanks. nightowlrn, our current one is just above a drawer and AFAIK, there isn't a divider between the two of them. We haven't had an issue with crumbs in the drawer below. But good point, the first set-up could have crumbs going into the drawer from the front of the board. I'll keep that in mind when I plan what's going to go in the drawer below it. 60 yrs old? Wow, sippimom! Thanks for the pic and the advice, , live_wire_oak! So that board is just hiding behind the drawer front but not really resting on the drawer sides, right? So you have to pull open the drawer and then the cutting board? How hard is it to pull the cutting board out to wash it in the sink? Once it was planed down, that is. :) DH and DS2 aren't good about cleaning the board off regularly so I pull it out to scrub it down with hot soapy water regularly and if it's really bad, I'll use a mild bleach solution on it (they don't cut meat on it but they will cut fruit and bread on it). I've talked until I'm blue in the face but they haven't changed their habits and likely won't. That's one reason why I almost didn't include one in the new kitchen but then I realized that I use ours regularly and not having one would be like cutting off my nose to spite my face. :)

Because my granite is so busy, we decided that having a small seam at the sink would look better than having a large one across the counter especially if it wasn't matched well. My fabricator originally wanted the large seam in the main counter. Luckily, I'd seen other GW kitchens to know that in my case, the sink was best.

sue4993 - Thanks : ) My granite is called Luna Pearl. It has black, white, grey and tan/taupe. For some reason, the photos I have don't really pick up the taupe color. I have heard that it sometimes goes by the name Bianco Sardo.

Thanks everyone! It's been crazy busy at work, so I haven't been able to watch the boards as much as usual (LOL!). I appreciate all the pictures.

Thanks everyone for answering a question I've had also. My fabircator suggested the seam in the sink area today and I was not crazy about it. Told him I'd have to think about it but these seams look great.

IMHO - the CARDINAL rule of seams is:
"Smaller is ALWAYS BETTER"

Whenever i can make the seam smaller and have a better
chane of "hiding" the seam - I will. I NEVER tell a customer
that "they'll never see the seam" or that "the seam will be
invisible" - BUT, the smaller the seam is, and the least
noticable a seam is - the better.

There are really great techniques that are available to
Fabricators now where they can make their seams next to
"invisible"... (almost)

If your Fabricator wants to do this - and you are not completely
"sold" on the idea yet - maybe he has a recent project that he can
show you where the quality of the seam he is proposing can be inspected
by you so that you CAN be 100% comfortable
with the "seam in the center of the sink" location...
BEFORE you committ to the work with him.....

Our granite was installed yesterday. The seam appears more visible in a certain angle, but blends in when you look down.
