I have two old kitchen sinks already here. One cast iron, and one enameled steel, both with double drainboards and both sitting in the pole barn. One rusted to the metal cabinet it was sitting on. Both free along with an olive green range with an oven on top. It was pretty awesome, but the top oven didn't work. I tried to find replacement parts, but there were none to be found. I could easily put either sink in there. I had kind of forgotten about them since I knew I wasn't using them in the new kitchen. Definitely not afraid of lead. I grew up with a lot of cast iron sinks through the years without known damage. I don't remember licking the sink though. Laughable-when we can, we butcher outside, at least the messiest parts. But if I can cut up something at 60 degrees instead of 20 degrees, I'm going inside. We butcher together or by ourselves. If we both aren't doing something else, we try to do it together and get it done faster, but normally one of us is doing something else, and one gets stuck by themselves. I could probably move some jars to the basement, but not many. The basement is tiny and mostly filled with hot water heater, jet pump for the well, and a water softener. There is some space under the steps that I could utilize though. I just have to hope and pray for dry weather. If it rains a bunch, we get an indoor pool. It's pretty horrific. Just bare studs in there now, so all of the space in between studs is open. South and east walls are exterior. The basement wall could be used too. I also like the idea of moveable carts. I need to think this all over. Lots of things to think about. Stacylh- I do have a foodsaver that I love. And I think your upright is just a hair bigger than our freezer now, so it might be an option. I'll have to do some checking. Localeater- Before we moved out here, we processed deer at my in-laws on a chest freezer that my FIL kept all of the taxidermy stuff in. And I definitely don't want to spend $125 on something that won't work. If the electric coil burners are cheap, I might get one just to have handy. I don't find it too inconvenient to find things in the chest freezer, but I rearrange and organize it several times a year so like items stay together, and to make sure that all of the less appealing cuts from the prior year have been used up. williamsem- it's never too late to take up a new hobby :) Is it bad that I would put cosmetically damaged appliances in my new kitchen? I have kids and I'm not overly careful, they are all bound to be scratched or dented at some point. Just less heartbreaking when they come pre-loved. And I'm open to any and all ideas. Obviously design is flexible, and I'm not too picky. Just trying to get the best use of the space possible.

I could see too how having a seat at the end might space out kiddos helping to make cookies, so not everyone is working in the same space. Or for entertaining, might feel less like an audience. Not really set on a storage configuration, but I like symmetry and if I had two drawer sets and one cabinet, then I wanted them spaced that way. If I go down to two cabinets it doesn't matter. Don't have to have the storage, but always nice to eek out more where I can. With the island slightly wider than original thinking, I can see going with an option like #6 above - where the overhang makes a backward 'L'. Not the table end like #7, more like #5. I like #6 best anyways. But that looks much wider. The seating at the end doesn't seem to 'share' legroom with the seat to the right? So the overhang might be the same on both of those sides? I'd probably unbalance it by keeping the side by the range an end panel. No one could really tell either unless they were right there. I'd have three legs then too. hmmm...thanks for the input...getting closer. I can feel it. What if the trash pull was to the left of the DW? And the bank of drawers currently there to the right of the sink? Think the spacing is a bit different tho - the drawers on the right aren't as wide as the ones on the left. That way easier access to eating area, cleaning off plates as they enter the DW, and closer to island prep. Most of the trash is recyclable, and my current prep is to the left of the sink. Granted with a usuable island more veggie prep may be done there. hmmmm...I'll mull it over tonight while I sleep. Just as long as I don't have another nasty kitchen nightmare like last night. Awful. Woke me up and had me sitting up in bed. Granted, now of course I can't remember the problem?

Oh, this! ^^^^^^ That looks lovely. I don't think it needs to be centered. That looks great. As an alternative, you could build a hood that covers that entire short wall and then just place the working parts (fan, ducts) over the range. That may look better or worse but something you might play with. A lot of the kitchens revealed here have lack of symmetry because they achieve better function without it. Or they find a creative way to balance the lack of symmetry as you have with your utensil crock. A tall, narrow painting would look good there as well if you decide to go with a simpler backsplash although that might be too-too much on the wall if you go with a decorative tile-insert. I'm a window person. Even if the view is questionable, I'd go for bigger windows. The more natural light, the better, imho. Maybe install some kind of trellis to hide the hot-tubbers? For the first time in my life, I have no uppers and my seasonings/oils/sauces are in drawers next to my range. I just bought a couple of cheap spice inserts at the hardware store and a few cheap drawer organizers (plastic boxes) at The Dollar Store. Oh, I love it so much. I can open the drawers and find everything I need at a glance rather than digging through the upper cabinet. As I said, my fridge placement doesn't bother me either due to the pit-stop at the prep area. I hope you find the same with your mock cooking sessions. I like this plan so much better than how it originally started. I hope you feel good about what you've achieved.

These are just rough ideas. They would need to be tweaked on a plan that's drawn to scale with all the dimensions. All those functions are a lot to ask from a relatively small room. If you looked at any of the links you'll see that laundry rooms are getting larger and aren't usually combined with home offices. Based on those measurements a washer/dryer should fit snugly in the 50" niche. It might not be the largest pair but close. Since that's recessed it helps with the depth. I'd put a 30" wide laundry sink (you could go smaller but that size also might work for the dog) in a 48" lower cabinet against the bump out with an 48" upper storage cabinet above. Bottom cabinet would be 25" deep and top 12" deep. Remember that you lose 48" or 4 feet across the center of the room which needs to be open to walk around and for cabinet doors to open etc. A 38" wide floor to ceiing pantry cabinet (or it could be open pantry shelves) could go in between the wall and the window in the space opposite the door. I'd run a desk top starting on the other side of the window and have it turn the corner the and go another 36-38" or so on the adjacent wall. That's sort of chunky but it takes advantage of the corner. It could serve for setting down and if left open below someone could sit there. Narrow drawer banks might be possible on each end of that. It could take 12" deep upper cabinets for additional storage -- I'd do those with glass doors. That leaves the 5' window space open. I'd run a low 12-15" deep cabinet below the window and put a pad on top. That's additional setting down space. Or change the window to one that isn't as low so the bottom half of the wall is more usable. What's missing by jamming so many functions into one small room is hanging space to dry things. That might be possible with hooks on the wall in the aisle space -- best most likely on the way to the pantry.
