Question about frameless cabinet wall thickness and hinges

I had purchased a one wall display of frameless cabinets that are from a Canadian company that is no longer supplying in my area. They are willing to sell me just the matching doors and hinges which would simplify my ordering and shipping tremendously, if I can get the frameless carcasses locally. Problem is that they specify a 5/8 inch cabinet wall thickness. All RTA frameless cabinets that I have found online have 3/4" side wall thickness. Would I still be able to use the doors on 3/4" side wall frameless cabinets if I purchase hinges for 3/4 inch side walls rather than using the cabinet company's hinges?

Both those hinges are listed at the bottom of the page linked on this post.

Also, would all 18" doors completely cover any 18" frameless cabinet no matter what the wall thickness? ie Is the 18" the outer dimension of the cabinet width?

18" will be the outside width of the cabinet regardless of the wall thickness so an 18" door should fit. Biggest issue will the compatibility of the hardware to the doors not the cabinet.

The 3/4" hinge will not work with the doors being bored for a 5/8" hinge. It will make the overlay/ reveal off, and double door cabinets would collide in the center. Single door cabinets would have 1/8" + reveal on the hinge side and 0" or hangover on the opposite side. The tolerance is super tight.

I am pretty sure cabparts.com offers both 5/8" & 3/4" boxes, they are a wholesaler, maybe you could call and find a dealer.

If you're going to do a frameless glass door, I'd either find a local dealer or talk to Wilson Glass. Depends on whether you want to DIY or not. With Wilson, you measure the opening, and they will ship you all of the hardware and put in the tempered glass order at a tempering plant local to you. Then you pick up the glass and install. The hardware will likely be from CR Laurence, so you can look at their catalog to get an idea (or just look at Wilson Glass' online selection). Assuming a relatively-normal door width (30 to 36"), the weight for 1/2" glass will be 75 to 100 lb.s. The install time will probably be 4 hours or so, and you'll need 2-3 folks who are able to lift to make it happen. As for the seals and sweeps, I think it depends on how big your shower is and whether it'll get spray right up against the door. And whether you care if a little water gets out. Our shower is pretty wide, but we still put the seals on the glass. Guess I could take them back off if I wanted to.

Just a couple of comments from a kitchen designer, if your sink is going to be undermount and it is 33" you will need a cabinet BIGGER than 33" to contain it. I don't see how you can do this even in custom. Maybe they could do 34" or 35"? It's really awkward to reach stuff on a 30" deep counter not to mention cleaning. 3/4" is definitely preferable for shelving. Another factor is the width of the cabinet. The wider you go the more likely you will have sagging. I'd say absolutely do not go over 36" wide if you're using 1/2" shelves. Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchens for Living

Not sure what kind of hinge she's talking about but most Full Overlay hinges open up slightly wider that 90 degrees. I think its 105 degrees. I do NOT like the single door 24" cabinets. The doors are HUGE and they tend to warp more often than narrower doors. But you need to look at your design as a whole and decide on door widths. A 24" door next to a 15" can look bad. Two skinny 12" doors can look bad next to a 21" wide door. Make sure you know your options on the possible combinations. The uppers absolutely do NOT have to line up with the base cabinets. That's a very old school and uncreative way of designing. Actually, it's not design, it's lining up cabinets on a wall. She doesn't sound too knowledgeable. How long has she been designing kitchens?

The plywood sides you added are going to be in the way of a European hinge working. If you shop online for concealed hinges, every product is going to have a diagram showing the relationship of the door to the cabinet box or faceframe. Not ever one is capable of envisioning the relationships in their head. Using the original hinge is going to save a lot of time and trial & error until you figure it out (or realize it's impossible to do). Might help to see the door, see the edge detail, see how it fits the opening. Casey

Thanks for the answers! robbcs3, that's an awesome link for cabparts.com. I will email them and ask if there is a dealer near me. I have searched and searched but was unable to find this so thank you.

Another alternative is to order the doors unbored and bore ourselves for the 3/4 inch hinge to use with the locally available cabinets. instructions as to how to do this? (ie templates).

Btt looking for information on differences or templates for boring for 3/4 inch walls vs 5/8 inch walls for frameless cabinets.
