wow. very annoying. good for you for sticking to your guns and letting your fabricators know where you stand. it's tempting to get worn down by all this crap and let this kind of stuff slide, but you have to just work really hard to keep your standards high.

and you're right to demand perfection from quartz countertops. there's no reason you should have something that even hints at or resembles a scratch.

Wow, I'm so miserable about my kitchen delays, but your situation is worse than mine. I really feel for you. This is my second big renovation, and I found myself in tears a lot with delays and mistakes the first time around. But it did get done eventually, and you'll get through it and have a beautiful kitchen in the end. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Of course, I wish I could take my own advice. I'm ready to tear my hair out.

We did our demolition in mid-February, signed our contract months before that, and we still do not have appliances installed, or cabinet doors, or light fixtures or pantry shelves, or a pantry door, paint etc., etc. I just heard today that the panels for our appliances will not be ready for three more weeks. So even if they manage somehow to ever get our appliances installed, they will still look ugly, and have no handles.

Early on, in an attempt to be laid back, we never compained when no one came for days and days at a time. Big mistake. The GC was obviously sending all his tradespeople to the houses where people complained.

We ended up having to do a major redesign midstream because of a mistake that would have looked awful. That was two months ago. When the electricians did not show up last week, and we didn't end up with appliances for the weekend as we'd been promised, we called the GC to ask what happened. He said "well, when you do a major redesign, you have to expect delays," implying that the redesign was at our whim. Really? So, the cabinet redesign that we had to do two months ago because someone (not us) messed up big time was the reason that the electricians didn't show up when they were supposed to on Friday?

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm at my wit's end. We were supposed to have a big party in mid-August that we had to cancel because we had no kitchen. But we thought for sure we'd have at least a mostly functional kitchen for Labor Day weekend, and now it looks like we won't.

Every day I come home hoping and praying to see progress on my kitchen, and every day I am disappointed.

But we will have kitchens some day, right?

Oy, Jeannie, i don't know how you are able to go so long without a functioning kitchen. At least i planned some trips this summer, anticipating delays, so that we have been away for most of the waiting time. But we are home now, for good, and it's toaster oven, breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
I'll post tomorrow about the countertop results.

I was 7 months without a functioning kitchen, still it doesn't compare to all you have and are still going through. I guess I wasn't non functional the entire 7 months, but I certainly was off and on for weeks at a time.

I would NOT accept anything with scratches. Stick to your guns.

It will get made and it will be perfect because you're standing guard to make sure of it. Here's hoping that they were able to polish it up for you. Good luck with the rest of it.

The Quartz is not coming! the installer shopgirl took one look at the scratch and sent it right back to Silestone. I could have stayed an extra week in florida! We are delayed at least a week. I told the shopgirl to tell Silestone that if they cannot promise a new countertop IN MY HOME by tuesday, i am ordering from Caeserstone.

Since you mention the problem with silestone, I will tell you something that my countertop guy said to me. He installs granite, Silestone and Cambria. THe was very happy that we chose Cambria. We got a 10% discount in the price due to choosing Camabria (I found this out after we'd made our selection and got the estimate in writing - so this fact did not influence my selection of Cambria over Silestone). He told us a few times that they have almost no installaion problems or problems with scratching with Cambria and that they have problems with Silestone (many not many, but more problems than they have with Cambria).

So, you may want to consider Cambria. I have no idea how it compares to Caeserstone.

In the contract, do you specify project schedule and corresponding penalty if there is delay?

No, Solution. That is something I should have thought of, since everything else went wrong.
They are promising tuesday delivery. Guess i'll just finish my floors this week.
Ma- i looked at Cambria first, but didn't like any of their colors. i also heard they have excellent quality control.

I so understand what you are all going through. I also had the renovation-from-hell...but we're in our kitchen now and while it isn't done yet (we're DIYing the inside of my SharB-look-alike pantry) and we still have a punch list to get through, it's functional and I am sooooooo enjoying it!

I promise, you will all get there...and it will be wonderful! (But, stick to your guns...do not back down no matter how much they push at you!)

Oh, my heart goes out to all of you with delays while your kitchen is already underway. I have been frustrated since my demo was supposed to start four days ago and I was (naively?) looking forward to the whole thing being "basically" done before or soon after school starting, and now our contractor disappeared about a month ago, which took us a while to figure out, so we are still interviewing contractors to do the job!! I really can't complain though, since I still have a fully functioning kitchen (well, various things actually don't work but that's nothing new)and haven't done so much as pack up a box of crackers in preparation yet. I can't imagine going without a kitchen as long as some of you so my hat is off! Hang in there! I presume (sure as heck hope) we'll all look back in months (years?) and feel it was worth it. . . . right?
