under cabinet or wall hood--help me decide please!

I finally decided from the help of this board that I really need a range hood. I've not had one before that I've used, but I'm thinking if I get the right one I'll actually use it.

I'm going to have a 36" Dacor Duel Fuel range.

Here's a description of the wall.

Next to the range will be 2 cabinets of equal size. Probably 18" wide each. Next to each of those cabinets are windows that have open metal shelving over them.

So, if you can imagine the wall, it goes like this:

6' window with metal open shelving over it, 18" cabinet, range hood?, 18" cabinet, 4' window with metal open shelving over it.

I was originally thinking I'd do an undercabinet mounted range hood. But I want to mount the range hood a little over 30" (DH is tall) and my ceilings are actually a little under 8'. That didn't leave much room for a useful cabinet anyway, especially if the pipe goes through the cabinet. This is obviously an outside wall, so I could vent straight out the back, but there don't seem to be many range hoods like that.

Rest of kitchen design is the warm white shaker look that is so popular here. We really only have this one wall with cabinets on it. Kitchen is 18' long but only 9' wide at its widest point.

So, should I get an undercabinet range hood or a regular wall hood and loose the cabinet?

Any range hood suggestions are greatly appreciated too.

I would skip the cabinet. It would be small and awkward inside and why pay for that? Spend the money on a good hood of that is more than 20" on the depth. These are powerful enough and designed to be installed at the 30" height you are wanting.

Type into the search engine here, vent hoods or range hoods, and you will find lots of possibilities. One of the ones that we saw that might work for you is a Thermador product that is pretty strong, is about 18" in depth but has a slideout that brings the total depth of the vent hood to be about 24".

There are lots of powerful ones that are pretty quiet. We are strongly considering one from Futuro Futuro ourselves.

I agree with earth pal that the cabinet isn't worth it. Given that you're going to choose a good hood, as far as looks go, some people get a beautiful hood (there are some gorgeous ones out there) and some people get a liner and have it enclosed to match their cabinets. You'll have to decide what works for you and your kitchen style. Decisions, decisions!!

Thanks a2gemini for your help. I would like to find a pendant for over the sink, but maybe just that one for the peninsula area. As per the island, we are considering a Modere-aire hood which will have lights (halogen I think). The hood look we are considering is posted below. However, the colour will likely be white and trim will be brushed steel (not the copper in the picture). Given this hood is large, perhaps we should do two pendants over the island? What do you and others think about the switch for the lights in the dining room? In other words when we leave the kitchen and go to the dining room, do you think we could have a switch on the back of the peninsula? How far away should the pots lights be from the wall? The i-joist are quite wide open with no plumbing above so we should not be too limited. Thanks! BTW our ceilings are only 8 feet, so the not at all like the image posted!! I agree that your kitchen plan breaks a lot of rules and will be very inefficient if not outright dysfunctional. Could you post a higher resolution diagram of the kitchen to make it easier for the talented folks here to help you redesign your space? I wouldn't run straight to a KD just yet. There have been way too many KD-designed plans that have needed tweaking by folks here to make them functional. In the end, you may need to hire one but I'd give the folks here a try first.

I haven't been following your range-wall discussion close enough. Did you consider putting three uppers of the same height on either side of the hood (clearing the beam on the left) and putting your pottery above the cabinets? Before you commit to hanging your uppers high with a shallow shelf below, I'd sort out what you plan to store on that shallow open shelf so you know how much clearance you need. Id probably hang the uppers so the bottom is standard height (18-20" above counter) or level with the hood. I think it was jillius who posted in the recent rule-breaking thread about her choice and the benefits of hanging her uppers at exhaust hood height. eta: are you giving the exhaust hood a few inches on each side or are the uppers right up next to the hood? I think it looks much better when there's space around the hood. Also, did folks already encourage you to get a hood wider than your range? That's a lesson I learned too late, after our kitchen was roughed in and kind of wished I would have done.

I had a 30" wall oven under a ceramic cooktop. Suboptimal. It was small and extremely low to the ground. When I replaced that cooktop / wall oven combo with a beautiful 30" induction range 20 years later, I gained a much larger oven, plus a same-width little oven under the huge oven (like a drawer under an oven but it actually could bake to 350 degrees) and six inches of free space around the cooktop, which I trimmed to match the shaker cabinets on either side. It looked fabulous, sleek yet traditional becuase I had a classic beadboard wooden range hood over the range.

Here are some pictures of the kitchen wall. Pardon the bad pictures..I only have MSPAINT. I tried to mock up a cabinet vs. a chimney style hood. What do you thinK?

I'm all for the wall mount hood. Not sure what's going on with the picture regarding scale, etc. but make sure the cabinets next to the hood are to code as far as clearance. No sense catching them on fire during a flambe session!

Go for an interesting wall-mounted hood. Given your configuration, a wall-mounted hood will be an architectural focal point of the kitchen and balance the wall. With the top cabinet, it will just look like a plain old hood stuck under some cabinets.

Another vote for a wall-mount hood. The cabinets (both above and beside) make it look really busy. Seeing as how the range is so nicely framed between those windows, I'd like it as a natural focal point, and there are so many beautiful wall hoods out there.

There have been a lot of beautiful Modern-aire focal point wall hoods on the board, and I know plllog got hers to vent straight back through her exterior wall.

With a dual fuel range and most likely high BTUs on the gas cooktop, I would buy either a chimney style hood as you have shown or other wall mounted hood. I just finished reading the manual for my dual fuel range and it kept emphasizing safety over and over again. If you were to opt for a cabinet above the range you would need to be extremely careful what you put in there because even those items could get warm. Plastic items could be very hazardous as well.
