I would go much much lighter in color. I think a neutral color would be better but at least keep it lighter.

I would go with a more neutral color such as beige because it is a basement.

Do you have a SW store near you? You need to find a paint color that has a high light reflective value. On the back of SW sample strips it tells how much white or light reflective quality the color has. You'd need something with 60 or above. For instance I painted my master bedroom a silver blue that has a light reflectiion of 68% because I only have one full size door for light and that's from a covered porch so there is very little outside light coming into the space. Even the wrong beige can absorb color instead of reflecting it if it has dark undertones. Hope this helps.

I recently painted some rooms Hush, by Benjamin Moore/Aura. It's a lovely very, very neutral lighter beige. It worked well for me in a room that gets very little light as well as others that get lots.

You might take a look at it and see if you think it will work in your room

I painted my basement that was a dark grey when I bought the house. Talk about depressing, it looked like the inside of a battle ship.

BM has the best paint with high reflection light. For color choice, pull the lightest color you can find from your rug (no tan's or browns) or other items that are going to be permanent in the room. Eggshell finish is best.

To save painting time, get a tinted primer that goes with your paint. Most times you only need to use one coat of paint over this, with your dark walls this is a plus.

I would use super white on the ceiling, and dove white on doors and trim.

I agree with the others who suggest you go to a much lighter color. I'm thinking sort of a sunny sand shade. The teal is a pretty color, but makes this particular room feel too cave-like. If you go lighter, the space will really brighten and open up.

Try "Carrington Beige" (HC-93) from Benjamin Moore. A true beige with no undertones.

Consider painting the trim and window trim in Dove White.

I would not use a color like taupish beige as it will only emphasize the oranigshness in your woods and make the room look as though it does not work together. I think you need better lighting. I don't see anything wrong with some color, but you need lights. A lamp or two in a basement ain't a gonna be enough. What about one of the greens like dry sage that will marry the wood and lighten up the room and not emphasize the orange wood.

Anyway, I am not sure the color is all that bad. Maybe just the color on my machine.

I guess the OP is busy painting away; a lighter color will definitely open up the space, the suggestions about additional lighting will help also.

I would try a greenish grey to counterbalance the orange toned wood and also all the brass on the chairs ; then pick large and colorful art for the walls,
to inject some life in the space.

Yes I am busy repainting!! It felt like Fiesta Cancun!! I'm happy with the plum, so bar room and family room are now both plum.( Gamay) I tried many neutral paints, they all seemed blah to me, or clashed with the woodwork. This basement gets plenty of light, and the dark color brings a warmth to the large space. In a couple years, if we tire of it, I'll probably switch to a sage green. I'm considering a sectional, and bought a couple pics from Bed Bath and Beyond. I will focus on decorating after the holidays. Thanks for your suggestions.
