Yes, I think it needs to be a tad bit bigger, next size up. I saw some beautiful rugs at Lowe's today, every color combo you could imagine and much better prices than what I've found elsewhere.

I wonder if you might not need an 8 x 10 rug after all. We have to walk over a corner of ours to walk into the kitchen and it's not a big deal. Showing less of the floor tile will make the room look more elegant too. The walls and furniture are really beautiful. I wonder if a more colorful rug with perhaps red in it wouldn't look better. It seems as though your chair has a black stripe but I wouldn't let that dictate your choice of rug color. I love your chandelier!

I was also thinking of an area rug with a red accent. However, I think I'm a chicken. As you can tell I love neutral colors and I would be extremely bold if I introduce red into the dinning room. I'm going to look at overstock and see what they have in a 6X9. Thanks for your idea Igrid.

I have the same style double pedestal table as yours in my dining room, and have found that a larger area rug than 6x9 is necessary. With an 8x10 area rug you would add only 12" at each end and 15" on each side, which is more suitable for chair movement and placement. Anything less than this and the back chair legs would always be straddling the rug every time you moved the chairs to sit down.

Once you have people in a seated position around the table the chairs would be pulled out at least 15" further than they are when the table's not in use. I have a leaf in mine, that expands the table to seat 8 comfortably, and need even more length in the rug for those occasions. I can see that you have your leaf in, so you might consider that, too, you don't want the chairs at each end to be off the carpet when people are seated. And yes, it may extend somewhere into your walkway, but it's a rug, and it's meant to be walked on!

I love your wall colors, chandy and wainscoting, and they all make an elegant statement - which would look even more stunning with a suitably proportioned area rug. BYW, I have the same style buffet as you do, also. I sure wish my table top was in as pristine a condition as yours, though, mine looks as though it's been through a war or two!!

You need at least an 8x10. A 9x12 may be better if you have more leaves for the table. The rug must be large enough that all the chair legs rest upon it when they are pulled out from the table while seating guests. That I learned from a month long furniture training while working at Ethan Allen.

grdnchk, I have the exact buffet server that is in your picture. I found it many years ago in an old furniture store near the Jersey shore. Exactly the same doors, shape, legs, back, drawer hardware. It is a fine piece and well=made with a surprising amount of storage.

I would go with the larger size rug. Overstock had a very large selection and priced very well with only 2.95 shipping. I just bought a black wool rug for my foyer there. It might be worth taking a look.

I agree with threedgrad. I've experienced the uncomfortable sensation as a guest at someone's home, of pulling my chair away from the table only to find myself half way on & half way off the rug. So, it not only looks awkward, it feels awkward.

I also agree w/ Ingrid that it wouldn't be that big of a deal if the rug moved into the other space a bit. I would rather do that than have a rug that is too small. Many people are afraid of having rugs that are too big, but imo, it's better to err on the side of too big!

I agree w/the other posters to go 2 sizes up on the rug - I would rec taking blue painters tape & mask off an 8 x10 & 9x12 then ask non partisan parties to pull chairs out & sit at the table - you shouldn't be in the 1/2 off 1/2 on land. I ended up w/8x10 in a small DR 12x12 because of that very issue - we walk thru/on one section constantly - no issue

Also if you are wanting more light in the room I would consider a lighter rug which would not only offer more light but also be more complimentary to the dark furnishings

I measured the area in which I would be confortable having the rug, and it would be a 7X9 but not any larger than that. I don't know why I really don't like the idea of having to walk on the edge of the area rug while passing from one rooom to the other. That area is a major traffic area, so I think that over time it would wear down the rug unevenly.

I'm still looking, but I'm returning black rug to Pottery Barn this week.

My husband and my son think I'm going nuts about this DR. Oh, Here is the mirror I have been waiting for.

Is your chandelier centered in room? It's hard to tell from photos.

grdnchk, I got a little smaller rug too so it wouldn't interfere with the traffic flow. My side chairs are fully on it when seated but if I have the leaf in the table the end chairs don't quite sit on the rug when pulled out from the table. It's never been a problem and looks fine. I'd rather have the back legs off when seated than always have the rug sticking out too far. I totally understand. In a perfect world I'd have both but once I made the decision I'm fine with it. I think a black background would look wonderful in there but there are so many gorgeous rugs out there. Your room is neutral and you have lots of options. It's looking great!
