OK, educate me. What do all the abbreviations mean?

I get the DH, DS, DD, and IMO, but there are more. First where have all these abbreviations originated? Is it exclusive to GW?? And what is OP? It is a hoot for me to have been trying to figure some of these out in the past few months. And I still giggle when I refer to my husband as DH....although I can imagine what names he grumbles under his breath at me...lol

So can you give me a site where all these abbreviations are spelled out for me? Thanks, and GLA!

lol...I think OP is 'original poster'. I usually type the abbreviation in my google search bar, if I don't know what it means. Usually I get an idea of what it could mean & go with that, if it makes sense. :)

Some are. Some aren't. Acronyms mean different things on different boards. Here HD will mean Home Depot. On other boards I visit it always means Harley-Davidson. Yet still, on other boards HD means hard drive. In the Navy it means 'head' as in the restroom. GW means Goodwill on some of the trash-to-treasure thrift boards I visit.

You just gotta get a feel for it I guess. Often someone will use the full word in their post first and subsequently use an acronym to save typing it over and over and over. I try to do it that way so there is no confusion. On the garden side of this board plant names are often acronymed if the name is long, hard to spell and frequently comes up in the conversations.

Original poster ie; the person who started the thread with a question or comment.

PO means 'previous owner'. One time someone asked why and how the Post Office planted hostas all the way up to their front door for them. LOL.

PP means previous poster BTW FYI. :)

Google these search terms for lists of definitions: *acronym* *abbreviation* *initialism*

Remember some acronyms have more than one meaning so if you look something up and it turns out to be a "bad word" or doesn't seen to make sense with the rest of the message a poster was trying to convey, keep searching for another definition.

Robert Heinlein said that writing was a job, and like any other job, you had to have set goals and work every day whether you wanted to or not, for more hours each day than most other jobs required. I've forgotten how many books he wrote, but I've often contemplated that he had made a master outline which included details of each book in his series of sci-fi books *years* before they were actually written. Oppositely, most other authors that I enjoy, have stated that they write one book at a time and usually only have the vaguest outline in mind at the beginning, letting the story develop as it is written. I've also read that some authors describe the act of writing as "having a monkey on your back" or having an addiction where the daily agonies of unsuccess were far outwieghed by the momentary but glorious thrill of the occasional success. This would probably take a book to explain. So let's start with Chapter 1... Before there were zone maps, there were Arboretums. So a lot of older books will say of a plant something like 'it is successfully grown at the Arnold Arboretum'. Somebody like me would read that and think I could probably grow it, but maybe not. On the other hand, something that was described as growing at the Montreal Botanical Garden would have to be hardier, and would definitely survive my winters. When the first zone maps came along, the idea was to connect two sets of data. The first set is how cold a particular place got under remotely normal conditions. The second set was what type of places a plant could reasonably survive. A big reason that Sunset Zones never caught on in the east was that while they could create the first data set, the second took many years, and many, many more data points. The USDA zones essentially took the existing arboretum data and assigned them number codes. Arnold Arboretum mapped to zone 6, Morton Arboretum to zone 5, and Montreal Botanical Garden to zone 4. This isn't that plants have been tested in an environmental chamber to set temperatures, but that they have survived real world conditions for several years in known places. So a zone 7 plant should be able to handle a colder than average year where the temperatures go below zero because it has handled a colder than average year where the temperatures go below zero at somewhere like Longwood Gardens. Whether or not it could handle record setting cold is a different matter, and often becomes a judgement call based on the life expectancy of the plant. A shade tree that will take several decades to prove its worth should be able to handle more extremes than a subshrub that may die of old age within a decade. (the shower is still running so I don't have to give up the computer for the pursuit of homework quite yet) Chapter 2 Plants in pots are generally considered to be a zone or two less hardy than plants in the ground because they don't have the benefits of dirt insulation around the roots. Most plants keep their roots under ground. Soil is often decent insulation*, and there is a small amount of geothermal heat coming up from underground. So the roots don't have to adapt to the large temperature swings that the above ground part of the plant are exposed to. They only have the insulating properties of the soil in the pot. Plants cannot generate heat (I can accept warm blooded dinosaurs. Warm blooded plants are a different matter) so any heat has to come from some external source. Without a heat source, the only thing the insulation can do is slow the transfer of heat from one place to another. So the pot will slowly heat up during the day, then cool down at night as the heat leaks out to the colder air. The same will happen to the ground, but the ground is only in contact with air at the top, not the sides, and is much larger. *Air is a good insulator, which is why storm windows and fiberglass insulation work as well as they do. Water is a good conductor of heat. So the insulation value of soil is very dependent on how much of the pore space is full of air, and how much is full of soil.

I agree right now if you can keep your old pc working for you and wait till windows 7 comes out you will be avoiding having to purchase any upgrades. It will be out in about a year. If you have any friends that have pc knowledge likely they could easily help you install a new hard drive and some RAM, these are things I do myself but my first time I was pretty anxious. I also agree that the desktop is generally the best option unless you travel a lot and would need a laptop for that. My sister just asked me the same question and I talked her into a desktop pretty quickly, if you have not used a laptop try asking a friend with one to let you try it out for an hour or so, feel how the keyboard feels, see how you like the touch pad instead of a mouse, etc. If you have any problems seeing also consider the smaller screen of a laptop. I have pretty severe hand problems so using a smaller keyboard would be very difficult. Sitting in a chair with the laptop on your lap would require some type of laptop desk so you do not block the air flow. As stated updating and replacing parts in a laptop is much more difficult. One thing you could definitely do also rather than install a new hard drive in your pc is buy a stand alone usb backup hard drive and move all your thousands of pictures and music and other files and data to that hard drive and free up your hard drive in the pc, if you did that and got rid of any old programs you no longer need, clean out any junk files and folders, empty the recycle bin, defrag the hard drive you may find you have plenty of room on that 80Gig hard drive. I have been seeing some incredible prices lately on usb hard drives so you could easily find a nice size one for around $50, and you could use that stand alone hard drive with any new computer you buy in the future. Plus no one would have to install it for you, you just plug it into your usb port and then you can access it from your pc just like your other hard drive. Add some RAM to what ever belarc says is your limit for that pc or at least 2 gig and I bet you would be surprised. RAM is cheap. I just bought a 1gig stick for one of my computers and it was less than $20 shipped. If your current pc is a desktop I would also highly suggest turning it off unplug it and open the side panel up and clean out all the dust bunnies, that can really affect the performance of a pc. Cleaning the computer and its components ecost has some very good prices right now this search is for under $50 units but it gives you some ideas. well now you have lots of options and ways to go and up to you to make that big decision. When a hotel puts in something like what you saw, the cost of the engineering design is spread over a bunch of rooms, the installers can be efficient because they are doing the same thing in room after room, and the sizing of the slabs is probably set so that there is minimal waste. They are also probably doing it as part of the initial construction where it's easier to do the install than having to work around the constraints a remodel might pose. Your cost will be higher because you are asking for a unique installation, even if it is simple. As hollysprings points out, the installers need room to maneuver to get the slabs into the room, which can become a problem in a smaller bathroom. For example, a 3' X 8' slab of 2cm granite would weigh about 350 pounds, would have to be carried in horizontally, negotiated around corners in the hallways, through the doorway of the bathroom, and then rotated upright and positioned. All without breaking the slab. If your ceilings are about the same height as the slab height, you can't simply rotate it to vertical because the diagonal of the slab is about 6" greater than the height of the slab. Given these issues, the typically higher material cost per square foot of slab granite over tile, and the labor cost of a granite slab install, I'd be surprised if you wouldn't be paying a lot more for this design than a standard tile shower. I think it's a cool idea, and it would be much easier to keep clean, but there are probably reasons that we don't see this done more often in a standard bathroom remodel. I'm not trying to discourage you...just trying to share some practical concerns. If you do decide to pursue this, I would be interested to hear what kinds of quotes you get. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

this is great!! I am sure though that the DH, DD and DS came first from this site. I have never heard it used before. Maybe it was used first in more formal countries? It took me forever to realize it meant Dear Husband....like I inferred before, it does not 'fit' in 'my house. That's why i guess that it took me so long to figure out what those stood for. LMBO! JK!

In the kitchen forum there is a thread that says, "if you're new to the Kitchen forum read this first" and it has all the abbreviations in it. Very helpful!

And my DH doesn't believe it means Dear Husband!! LOL he teases me about it. In the kitchen forum DW is dishwasher but sometimes a husband is the poster and is referring to his dear wife, a bit confusing at first.

I remember a while back someone had posted a question and signed it TIA. So, in my response, I called her Tia--not realizing that TIA meant "thanks in advance." Duh!

Also, especially on the kitchen forum, SS can mean soap stone.

And don't forget the PO--the Previous Owner. Used when referring to something terrible that was done to one's house before one took possession.

As in...

The PO painted latex over high gloss oil...without sanding and priming in between.

I've owned a grand total of two houses in 26 years...and I had to deal with that in BOTH. People, please. Prep properly. Do NOT become the dreaded PO.

I see hubby written all the time. My ds (darling son) ha ha gets a real kick from this. He mocks my writings all the time! He like ds too, since he refers to himself now all the time as ds. He's only 17, he'll grow out of it!! ha ha
