Living Room Color Choice?? Help!

I have a sage green sofa and a burgundy red leather lazy boy as the main furniture in my living room. I cannot think of a good color to paint the walls to tie them together. Also, does anyone know of any gorgeous curtains that would tie the two colors together? Can someone show me what French Country looks like, because I know I like that style but I can't envision actual colors or pieces to look for.

Start by reading about French County. Get to know the style and the philosophy behind it. French country can be very different depending on the region and the era. Google for French County and you will find some decorating blogs.

I would recommend getting 'French By Design' by Betty Lou Phillips. You can buy it or maybe get it at the library. The library will also have other books filled with pictures and how to archive the look. The library will have decorating magazines. Ask the librarian what they have at the library in your area.

When you are ready to shop start with Google just to "see what's out there" and get and idea of price and quality. When you have some ideas run them by everyone here and you will get some honest advice and help to pull it all together.

The most important point in pulling a room together is to get the right balance in the tone intensity. Are your sofa and chair muted or are they more prominent colors. Of course a nice neutral will pull most colors together. If you could post a picture you would probably get your answer in no time. That would be a great help.

Thanks everyone! The house is being built, so I do not have any pictures of finished rooms. The house itself is ranch style. The great room will have rustic wood beams, light colored walls and light cocoa wood floors. As I said, I am going for the 'cozy" Ralph Lauren look". I love bright colors and obviously, I like a bold piece included in my room! I had the chair custom made some time ago with the beautiful Ralph Lauren Algonquin fabric, so I sure want to use the chair in the living room. I am just having a hard time deciding what color leather couch would go best. They do not have a red that works and I think a black leather would be too stark. With grandchildren, I would like to stay with leather instead of a fabric!

Step back right now and change the carpet before doing one more thing. Hopefully you will be doing wood floors but we need to know that before any more choices are made.I don’t see the cahirs but usually blues and tans work together. What are the rugs you show ? I really do need to see the whole space and you need to post the actual sofa sample or is that the sofa in the picture .

Is the new wood going to be as light as what is shown in the pictures, or is that unstained? What is shown is too high contrast. While you won't be able to get an exact match (nor should you even try to), the colors should have the same undertone, so both cool colors or both warm with the same undertone. The contrast should be about two shades different - not so different that it looks like you totally changed your mind about what you wanted from one project to another.

hmmm, okay, with the two pieces being contrasting color, you can choose to have either one "blend" with the wall color, so that it does not stand out as much, or have both stand out equally. What I mean is, a darker or lighter sage green would complement both pieces, but the sofa would blend with the wall more, making the chair an accent piece. Can't recommend specific color without seeing the sofa. take a look at SW Svelte Sage, or BM Saybrook Sage or Restoration Hardware Silver Sage for the idea of what I am talking about. A neutral, like a soft taupe or cream, would balance both pieces without a high contrast. Or, you could use a soft muted gold/gold tan, which would contrast with both pieces and introduce your third color. Look at SW Camelback, for more gold, BM Roxbury Caramel, more tan, BM Decatur Buffmore neutral, SW Blonde, SW Bagel for ideas.

Combine colors creatively. You should not be afraid to try out colors that do not traditionally go together. For example, use a shade of light green and put up some wall hangings that are framed in orange. Remember that color changes significantly depending on the light in the room. So before picking a color, it is always advisable to view the color in the room where it has to be applied. [You may use a color swatch for this purpose or just paint some portion of a wall with that color.
