old grates/switch plates/outlet cover sources?
Comments (5)I've found that when looking on ebay, it's best to use the words "vintage" or "antique" in the search. I look for vintage grate, antique grate. Right now, there's quite a few hits with vintage grate. For switchplates, I've never found that you'll get alot of covers at one time and it takes alot of patience to build up a quantity. So, I shop at classicaccents.net. I've purchased also from rejuvenation.com, but the switchplate covers are about the same, just cheaper from classicaccents. Do you live in a community that has architectural salvage stores? Because grates typically weight alot, often being made of cast iron, you can save on the shipping by shopping in store. That's the way we've purchased the grates that we have purchased. We're in greater Chicago but I've gone to salvage places across the country. Are you looking for other hardware pieces? If so, try the exact name in your searches....See Moreretractable outlet covers
Comments (9)Thanks for the response, randy427. Our outlets do look like the link you showed, but I'm not sure if they are tamper resistant. Since they were just replaced, they might be required by law to be tamper resistant, but I'm not sure what the rules are for New York City renovations. Is there a way for me to tell if the ones we have are tamper resistant? greg_2010, thanks for the link - this is indeed exactly what I was looking for. So I guess the name of the shape of the outlet cover is Decora - this makes it much easier to google what I'm looking for. :) Thanks so much to both of you for your replies!...See MoreOutlet Covers with Doors or Covers?
Comments (7)In this case I already know I want them. I've worked in two separate businesses that had attractive, hinged outlet covers that I liked, and that's the aesthetic I want here. They weren't the utilitarian and temporary ugly things you find in babies' rooms or on outdoor outlets, but covers made especially for indoor environments that want to cover outlets up. I know they do, or at least at one time did, exist. The trouble I'm running into is just finding a source for them....See MoreNeed help with outlet cover ideas
Comments (31)Somewhere, I think it was here on Houzz, I saw recently a new design for outlets, that didn't require a faceplate. I'm googling it now, but haven't found it yet. However, in my mind, the biggest issue you have is a contractor who wants to charge you hundreds of dollars per outlet to move them. Now, I'm no contractor nor electrician, but I just had an outlet moved, in my very HCOLA area, and I think the licensed electrican charged me $75, which included his service call. And that was only one outlet. In a new build, I'm sure the general can get the electrician back in there and move things around without it costing hundreds of dollars per outlet. That is a signal your builder doesn't care and doesn't want to help you. What I would do in your situation, is let the contractor know you aren't going to need a backsplash at this time, and let him finish the work. A backsplash can be done later, when you have time to explore your options. Take care of your family situation first, before you put in expensive tile, and then find out later it was inelegantly done. I'd want that tile to be a showpiece in the kitchen. It's the first thing people would notice in your space, and deserves more attention....See MoreRelated Professionals
