What color for metal curtain rod?

My living room walls are a light yellow. I am hanging a huge mirror with a gold metallic frame over my sofa. All of my trim is a medium brown stain.

I am hanging white linen drapes on my picture window (which is stained wood). I'll be using electrical conduit for the curtain rod, so that I don't have a seam in the middle. I have to paint the conduit of course.

So the question is: What color do I paint the rod? The room is very casual so I don't want bright brass or gold. The curtains will not be operational as I have blinds on the window to keep the sun out. So you will always see 6' of the rod that spans the window itself. Should I paint it white or some metallic color?

If the curtains are not going to be operated, why not just hang short rods on each side, so you don't have to deal with that bare 6' scan at all.

If you go for the full length rod, what will be behind it? Wood trim or blinds, and what color are the blinds if so? That would be the factor that would be important to know for me.

They make some decent-looking 'antique brass' colors in metallic spray paint these days, I'd probably go with that.

When choosing rod colors, I think about how the color will look against the wall color. I have silver in my living and dining rooms, bronze in my sewing room, and black in my bedroom. I do not have any curtains with grommets.

These are the options I have of metal rods - brushed silver, granite, brushed bronze and dark copper. I'm unable to find a matte silver without going custom. Thanks for the input Patricia, would any of the above options work in the space?

We were going to add color with an area rug , pillows, pictures and decor. We have hardwood throughout the whole 1st floor and we use this room to sit on the floor ect. I don’t like the coldness of hardwood, the noise in the room ect . I know it isn’t idea to put an area rug over wall to wall but works with how we use the room . We had dark walls before and was told on here that I should brighten it up. Just painted this weekend so I hope the color isn’t horrible . We just wanted brighter and I thought the curtains should not make a color statement but perhaps I am wrong

Cindyloo, you could also use closet dowling for rods. It cones in 12' lengths, and a variety of circumfrances. You have the option to leave it natural wood, or paint/stain.

As for the conduit(isn't it too lightweight?), I would use a color close to oil rubber bronze. It's not bronze, not brass, and not black, but dark with a hint of a metallic. You might have to brush on a couple of colors to get the effect. ;o)

I like drapes to look like they are operational. And it will be possible to close my drapes, but I don't think they will be easy to move and I don't have any reason to ever close them.

I currently have four inside mounted mini-blinds on the window. I have to be able to keep out very strong sun in the summer and I prefer to have something right up against the glass as opposed to using curtains, which trap the heat between the windows and the curtains. This window creates many problems for me, lol.

I plan to hang the drapes just below the ceiling and the stack back will probably be 1.5 - 2 feet on either side. Since I've got plenty of room to do so, I want to hang plenty of panels to help absorb sound in the room.

I dragged my 38 x 58 gold mirror into the room to see how it was going to look with the yellow walls. It does not look good! Now I think I have to paint the frame of the mirror. Any suggestions on colors for that?

The photo of the window was taken when the walls only had primer on them. Then I painted the room with Behr's (I will NEVER EVER depart from my previous policy of using only BM again) Gold Buttercup. I took the photo of the mirror tonight. The walls are much darker yellow than they look in the photo.

Patty Cakes that's a good suggestion. I think the wood might be stronger and it would also probably hold the paint better.

I read about using the conduit when I searched this forum for curtain rod posts. Someone had posted a link to a blog that showed how to use the conduit.

I wonder if the closet dowels will only come in thicker sizes though? I'll have to check it out...thanks for the suggestion!

Cindy, HD had dowling in several different thicknesses, from about 3/4" to maybe 3". I used the 2" size and stained it. I've suggested it several times on this particular forum and you're the only one who has ever acknowledged my even posting it~~I would say 99% of the time I got no response, so thanks for that.

It's just nice to know when you've made a suggestion on a thread, that ALL of them have been read, and IMO ALL should at least be acknowledged. Geez, not shoving the idea down anyones throat. Sorry, just had to vent. ;o)

Well your suggestion really solved my problem Patty, so I am certainly grateful.

Since my window is stained, I think the best solution is to stain the rod to match. Now I just have to figure out which thickness to buy. I notice most people use very thin rods. I know that the thinner the rod the easier it will be to actually slide the hidden tabs across if I want to operate the drapes. At the same time I think it's important to make sure the rod looks like it can handle the weight of the drapes.

2" sounds really thick to me. Can you post a picture of your rods? Thanks for your help!
