How to undermount SS sink on stone counter?

Nervous question... how are your u/m sinks attached to your stone countertop? Yes Kevin, read about the sink setter, however that ship has sailed. Mine is just epoxied (caulked?) to the counter, and the counter guys took away the clips saying they were for laminate installation. Pictures... advice...???

First, I would call them and ask for the clips back. If they threw them out (which they might have), ask them to replace them. You paid for them, they did not!

If you aren't willing to do that, then I think you're going to have to go to a plumbing supply, hardware, or other store to buy additional clips.

It sounds like you want to do this w/o the clips...but I'm not sure you can...at least not "right".

I'm not sure... one old message on GW said some undermounts are just glued to the stone surface. How are the clips attached (disclosure... I wasn't home and didn't even see what the clips look like)?

Chronic water exposure is a tough situation for any finish. End grain exposure makes it worse. Maple also has a relatively high coefficient of expansion with moisture content, IIRC. If it was mine, I'd put something else around the edge of the sink.

You should do the calculation yourself to confirm. I would assume 3.5" from the front edge of the countertop to the front of the sink. You probably wouldn't be able to get it to be much less, maybe 0.25". You also need to look at the measurement requirements for your faucet. You will need a bit of clearance between the back edge of the sink and the faucet cutout hole. You also need to look at the exact faucet and make sure that the handle doesn't have extra space requirements. Some faucet handles extend behind the main tube -- if you are short on space, make sure you have one that doesn't force your fingers to bang against the back wall. If you have a backsplash behind the sink, you should deduct the width of that material from the overall space requirement. If your sink is 18" front-to-back you should be able to find a faucet that works, but it will be close and if you pick the wrong one it could definitely be an issue. I would try to find the right matching faucet rather than extend the depth of the countertop, which can lead to other issues (e.g. harder for people to reach the faucet or anything behind it).

I opted for a Karran sink but I saw a counterseal sink/counter on display - it looked pretty good but how it holds up longer term I don't know. I've had the Karran sink for a little over a year at my weekend lake place. No problems so far. Things to consider in my opinion. I'm careful about the edge where the laminate meets the sink - it seems like this might chip easily. The Karran sink does stain easily though it does clean up easily too with softscrub. It's the kind of sink you need to clean frequently though. Here's a picture of mine.

Since you have a plywood subdeck (under the granite) your sink will be mounted, sandwiched between plywood and granite. Better? I like that much support for the sink and mine is installed that way, but it is a subject of much debate here.

Mine is just glued on as well... expoxied or caulked.

This was right after installation

A few days later when everything is dry

Countertops are quartz

Mine is also siliconed in place but supported from underneath by 10" shelving brackets.

The brackets are pushed up to the bottom of the sink bowl and screwed into the cabinet wall.
It's only been since October but it feels really solid.
You could probably still do this.

Thanks everyone... I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one with adhesive only. Although I like the idea about the metal brackets as a secondary measure willtv... it's possible I could retrofit that or wood supports after the fact.

My understanding is that the brackets should be primary and that way if your sink failed some day it could be replaced. My granite fabricator said that was the method responsible fabs use. If it is a strong epoxy, he said it is doubtful the sink could be removed without breaking the granite. (On the other hand, I would think a sink failing is not that common.)

I have not finished going through the process myself so I can't evaluate how it looks or works yet.

With brackets, there does need to be some kind of caulk to seal it from leaks. If you have a Silgranit sink it cannot be plumber's putty or that will stain your sink permanently. I believe the caulk is a silicon-based, which is what it sounds like you have, WillTV.

Colorfast, you're correct. I my case the sink is supported by the brackets and the silicone acts as a sealer between the sink and the countertop. It also acts as a "glue" but its main purpose is to create a seal.
As I said, it's been in place since last October and so far, so good.
