We have similar taste -- I like virtually everything you pictured, and especially love the chairs.

The only thing that strikes me is that the 'yin and yang' of room are not reconciled. The black chairs, game table and sideboard seem strong/yang. The pale carpet, sofa, and ottoman are very feminine/yin. You need both in a room, but something isn't quite resolved here.

The more yang solution seems easier to accomplish -- maybe a carpet with a bit of black and a bolder artwork. Then pale drapes for the feminine balance. A more yin solution does not spring readily to mind.

By the way -- what color are the walls?

First, the marking on my can of touch-up paint is 8232W, which a google search reveals to be "Lulled Beige." However on my monitor, it looks much more peachy than my walls appear. Perhaps they've gotten a bit lighter over time.

I definitely see what you're saying about the room balance, or lack thereof. The leather chairs are actually brown, but your point is keen in any case. I don't seem to have any photographs that accurately reflect the color, and it's too gray a day today to try to get any new shots.

As for drapes, i never ever have been able to embrace window treatments. I know they're a HUGE enhancement to a room, but it's never been a feature i can wrap my brain around. I seem to favor naked windows (as opposed to being naked in my windows). Fortunately, the neighbors i do have are far enough away that privacy isn't an issue.

I have the same issue with windows - this may be my first year to actually attempt drapery -- and not for decor, but warmth!

Oh no, that's a bear of a problem. I could engrave what i know about windows on the head of a pin in three languages. But if you're having a problem with heat retention, i wonder if the windows should be checked?

I like a lot of what you've picked out but I also understand what mjlb is talking about. It's kind of a 'black and white' look and I know the chairs are brown. :)

What I think is missing is texture and pattern. Because of what you want the room to represent, I think those elements are important for a more relaxed feel.

I could see a earthy flatweave rug and at least one of the upholstered pieces in a stripe or pattern. The game table is great and I'd like to see more of that feel and warmth to your space.

Can't say I'm crazy about the lamp. While I'm all for throwing in a bit of contemporary in a room, so it's not too serious, you have enough clean lines in your other choices. I'd look at art or another element if you wanted to go in that direction.

Thanks so much for your insights, parma42. I'll really put some effort into adding texture and pattern to upcoming purchases. I'm was lusting after a chocolate brown faux fur pillow and throw i saw recently, but i think now i'll look for a pattern in maybe cashmere or some such.

In any case, it will all have to wait. Shopping is definately done for this year. :)

By the way, i'm relieved to know it's not totally off-kilter to have those chairs facing the direction they are. I was a bit worried about the orientation being imposing, but since no one has chimed in with, "You've got to turn those chairs around," i'm guessing they don't look too bad! :)

Oh, definitely not -- I think the chairs look great that way! Was more concerned that you'd separate them.
