Shiplap?

Hi all

Have a design dilemma. Our living room wall needs help. It has one window far to the left and is 17 ' long and is flanked by sliders and a built in desk on the back of a stairwell. the ceiling height is 8'. This is not a focal point for the room (water view out sliders is) but it is one of the few art walls in the open floor plan.

Was considering doing something like a painted shiplap wall to add interest and depth. Don't really want to extend the look beyond that one wall but have two concerns 1) will the long horizontal wall make the ceiling heigh feel lower and 2) is it a problem that we don't carry the look through the rest of the open layout?

I think it will look great. I love the look and I would embrace the horizontal factors. Go for it!

This is an old converstion but would like to add a little. Here in New England, in expensive coastal homes, shiplap is classic(not a fad) on and around fireplaces, in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens kitchens, and entryways/mud rooms. It is no more a risk than any other material as it is placed over the stone structure of the fireplace. It uses a fireproof adhesive that insulates against extreme heat and protects the wood. Using a gloss or semi-gloss paint will allow you to wipe off any soot/smoke discoloration that may occur down the road. Those referring to it as a material of poor people are out of touch or unaware of its historical use. The white pine of New England made the finest shiplap for homes as well as the whaling/fishing boats and battleships. The modern materials are of very high wuality and quite durable if you choose wisely. Disregard MDF shiplap unless you want it to look cheap or you need absolute uniformity. That wont give you the classic look and feel though. I suggest birch if its available, for its resistance to humidity and water. You can recreate any style home yiu want in any location. There are no rules about maintaining pueblo homes only in the south west, or a craftsman only in California and the midwest. Doing so is an exercise in suppressing your own creativity and vision. Be true to yourself and live your ideal life regardless of future concerns. Dont worry about what buyers may want in 5-10 years unless you are just flipping a home. Build what your best self belongs in.

Another vote of no shiplap. The additional pics really help with figuring out what the black parts in first pic really are. Nice job on stairs & the entry bench set up. Nelliebean’s idea of wallpaper to cover the wall where you tried filling in the paneling groves is a great one. I think it’s either that or remove the paneling & repair wall if needed. Adding shiplap is another layer of lines and texture on top of the painted paneling & the pattern on stair risers - both of which look great. But adding shiplap is more lines & horizontal ones at that. Way too much. So, back to wallpaper & lighter color of paint.

The details need to be well thought out and well executed. I might try reinforcing the horizontal band of windows with trim. I'd want to see the paneling running into a board in the corner. Boards might terminate into a skirtboard and not have a skirtboard simply applied on top.

First shiplap was the outside of farm buildings and what is now called shiplap is afar cry from the original. IMO the shiplap ship sailed already and the skylights are all the busy you need so drywall for the ceilings . I actually wonder why those skylights with the huge windows ?

Lapped boards on a wall look fine when they are there for a reason, such as having extended a house. But to add as a decorative statement - I don't know. Photos of the room would help.

Go to Houzz and look at interior horizontal boards. They have some great examples for inspiration like this one from Houzz.

Following on what graywings says, for the look to make sense, the wall in question should be an interior wall with a doorway and/or windows into the house, as if the wall used to be an exterior wall. Putting the boards on the inside of an exterior wall is disconcerting, as if there used to be a house on the other side, but now, not.

You wouldn't think these subtle visual clues would affect you, but they do. It's the same reason that I don't favor blue floors...feels vaguely insecure, like walking on sky or water...

Shiplap appears to be a current trend. Tracery Interiors, for example, is using it in new build interiors that are getting design mag play. Like some other posters, I prefer that it be used within reason, e.g., to preserve an historic element of a house. Some of the applications that I see in mags seem gimmicky to me. Just one of those personal quirks, I suppose.

Oh, I've often admired that house, caminnc.

Agree that it's previous life makes it work. You could panel one wall effectively. Theoretically. Seventeen feet, lengthwise, is a lot. I think the space itself will determine if that's possible without looking odd.

Do you ever watch Millionaire Decorators? On the show last night they remodeled a house in Nantucket and for the walls, all the way up to the angled ceiling, they did strips wood vertically on the wall. It looked to be 1x3" strips about every 18-24".
