Slightly OT: How to accesorize your kitchen

Did you guys miss me the last few days especially on the KIA threads? Probably not, but that's OK. I was off getting the perfect finishing touch for our kitchen. A 1000 mile round trip later our kitchen has the perfect addition. A little small, she just fits inside the 4" toekicks:

Welcome "Chase".

Chase is a Shih-Poo (Shee-pooh). Her mom is a Shih-tzu and her dad is a toy poodle.

Chase came by her name because she loves to chase her tail and us. Yes itÂs not a very feminine name but thatÂs a whole Ânother (awfully embarrassing to me especially as I have 4 kids) story.

And yes, she is that small. Right now she weighs 1 lb 14 oz and sheÂs sitting in front of our 4" toekicks in the kitchen. SheÂll be about 4 times this size full grown.

She is so cute! Congratulations!!! My parents have the same mix (I think from MN or WI) and she is now two years-old and beautiful, just like your sweet little girl ....

Oh my gosh! How adorable!!! - I've been toying with the idea of adding to our crew and had decided not to, until I saw Chase! (which, btw, is my DS/almost 23yo name). If you remember, Nicole Kidman's name in a Batman movie was Chase Meridian. Not where I got the name, but thought I'd toss that your way since she's a girl too.

Everyone, thanks for these useful ideas and insights. You guys are really creative. Pretty much every bit of my jewelry is costume; I only have one nice ring and it's already in the safety deposit box across town. So no theft worries. I'd be sad to lose my costume stuff, but none of it is irreplaceable. Les, your suggestions are just so spot-on re my style: would you please come out to visit and just redo my entire house while you're here? (Bring me some Frango Mints, too?) I hadn't even known those plain, mirrored jewelry cabinets existed. What a great idea. Anyone seen one with Art Nouveau or Lloyd Wright -style detailing? (: (well, a girl can dream...) Igloo, if I see any antique silverware boxes out here in the sticks, I'll emulate you. Love that idea too. You guys are great!

Slightly OT: Cats on the Counters-How to Stop Them?

My cat is trained not to go on the counters. It takes some real patience on your part, though. A real "cat person" loaned me a book called "how to make your cat do what you want" when I got my cat, since I had never had one before. I learned a few critical things from that book: 1. Cats do not respond well to negative reinforcement from you. If you yell or chastise them when they do something, they will do it because it gets your attention, and sometimes out of anger or spite or just to demonstrate that you are NOT the boss of THEM. 2.Positive reinforcement SHOULD come from you so the cat associates you with the positive rather than the negative. 3. Negative reinforcement should NOT be associated with you and should happen both when you are there and when you are not. 4. If you punish a cat every time they do something, they only learn not to do it when you are around. Several methods were suggested, but what worked for me was the marbles. Cats hate loud noises. You put a handful of marbles in cleaned out tin cans and line the counter with them. Leave them there all the time that you are not working at the counter. Space them so the cat can not jump up onto the counter between them without knocking them over. If the cat jumps on the counter he/she will knock over the can of marbles onto the floor which will cause a loud noise as the marbles fall and startle the cat. The scat mats would also work, but you would need to cover the counters with them and that would be rather expensive. I would not want to spray stuff on my counters that is not food worthy, so check out what is in those sprays and how they smell and make sure they will not be absorbed into the stone or damage the resin or discolor the stone. I lived with those cans of marbles for about 6 months, but my cat is now 9 yrs old and never goes on the counters. I confess to having knocked them over more than she did. I found the easiest way to live with them is to just push the cans to the back of the counter while you are working in the kitchen so you are less likely to knock them over yourself, and then just slide them forward again when you are done. When she did jump up on the kitchen table a few times after I stopped using the cans, I would laugh, pick her up off the table and put her on the floor, and tell her "that's not for kitties". If she jumped up again, I laughed, held her up so I was looking at her on "eye level" and said the same thing, then kissed her on the head and placed her back on the floor. If I had to I would have put the cans back rather than yell at her, a good decision as I learned later with my couch. She doesn't go on the table now 9 years later, either. However, I wasn't so smart with the couch and yelled at her and shooed her away from it. To this day, if I am ignoring her and she wants to get my attention, she will go over to the couch and start to run her claws over it! I am not sure if it is out of print now or not, but even if it is, if you can get a used copy off eBay or somewhere, it is worth the price. It is esp useful if you are starting with a kitten, because the learned behaviors will be with that cat (and YOU) for many years. It might take longer for cats that are older and were used to getting up there, but a new kitchen and a new countertop are a great time to alter the behavior. The cat is aware that things have changed and this is new stuff. He/She might as well learn that the new counters just aren't as friendly as the old ones. :) Sue

I'm patiently waiting for a World Market table to arrive, myself. I was looking for a kitchen/dining table that will be our only table (no formal dining room). I also had a size requirement that it not be too wide or too long because it's going in the space between my kitchen and living room, but I needed to be able to make it larger for company. I looked around a lot, for months, including craigslist. I already knew I was getting the chairs separately because I'm getting red bi-cast leather parsons dining chairs. When I looked at the cost of a table on craigslist (most come with a set of chairs) versus a brand new table, I'd only be paying $100 or $200 more for a brand new table, so I stopped with craigslist. I also needed something durable since we have three kids (ages 6 to 13) so veneers were out. This table is wood all the way through. Furniture gets damaged over time, and that's something I'm prepared to live with. I'll be a lot less upset with a $500 table getting some scratches in it than I will with something a lot more expensive, so the price point is good, too. A girlfriend of mine has a few pieces of World Market furniture, including her dining table set, and loves it. (She has no kids though). Good luck on your shopping. Thanks Brooke. She is adorable and the kids ADORE her. She was a total surprise to them. DH took them on a two day trip to WI and I drove in the other direction to the Upper Peninsula in MI to pick her up.

Well, isn't that just the cutest accessory! You're doing the same brilliant thing I'll be doing . . . for me, it will be a new house, new floors . . . and new puppy . . . What are we thinking!!

A kinda cute story about the name Chase. In between dogs,I really wanted to name our next dog Chase. Well, we had new neighbors move in across the street and became friendly. She was pregnant with twins. Soon blue announcements went up in their yard. Yup you guessed it Chase was the name of one of the twins,and I decided that their friendship was worth more than a name.

Congrats on the new addition! Oh, so cute! I can see why you are in love! If she is part poodle, most of those love to fetch, so if she carries that gene, she will love to chase the ball. Great name!

He's 3 months old, 6 lbs and a few ounces, due to be about 9 lbs at most.

So how about the other accessories???? Are you finding the doggie is leaving you "treats" you don't plan on for long term accessories? I must say, there is a special place (or they're best be) for women who give their husband's puppies (ok I'm looking for one...I'm tired of torn up toys, books, poop and spots!) but he is a cuddle bug, so when he's bad....he just snuggles back into our hearts.

Your Chase is sooooo cute!!! It's fun to have a puppy at home (despite the messes LOL) Although my cats think we've made a HUGE mistake and they want him returned immediately.

Oooh, Igloo is Killer a Cotton du Talier (did I spell that right?) He's so cute and fluffy. Are you brushing him every day? What about grooming?

Thanks everyone. It's like having a new baby. Last night I was up at 2 and at 6:30 she was ready to play. She didn't go potty at 2 so tonight I plan on seeing what happens if I let her cry it out.

We're working really hard on potty training. Every accident so far has been my fault so Chase is doing pretty good.

You should definitely get the books by the Monks of New Skete. Their puppy book is outstanding.

We start school on Tuesday LOL And I'm getting the book! Fortunately our darling is sleeping from about 10 to 6 am (then DH takes him out and he joins me in bed...he's in a kennel at night). And yes he's a Coton de Tulear :) You were close on the spelling LOL

Our "accidents" are probably because the breeder uses potty pads so they can go indoors. I'm not a fan of the potty pad, so we're working on him going outdoors. It will just take a little time (I hope LOL). At least this baby sleeps at night (much better than DS) lol

momoftwinboyz (I'm a mom of b/g twins) the breeder is in Harrisville. Their website is www.caninecuties.com. This took quite a bit of research and when I read their website I just knew it was the place for us. It's a self sufficient non-certified organic farm and everything they said just jelled with our philosophies.

It's kinda scary being totally responsible for such a little thing and for how her personality turns out. Dogs mature so much faster than kids - doesn't give you much room for error.

Dh is out in the yard building her a potty tray. Poor little thing is so close to the ground that the wet grass in the morning is bothering her. She jumps on my feet and looks beseechingly up at me to pick her up before she even starts. Her potty tray will have under floor heating and pheromones built in so she knows where to go. It's the high end of high end potty trays.

OMG - I've been on this site too long. Only kidding. It will be gravel and sand filled.

Now that's my idea of accessorising! Hope he brings you many years of enjoyment and all you need to do in return is provide him with water, food, and a lot of love! Have fun with your new addition!

Oh he's so adorable! He's a little smaller (like 103 POUNDS smaller) than my half poodle (standard, not toy) accessory though! We are looking to get a teeny tiny one some day. We'd call a new puppy Rosemary...to go with our big accessory, Sage:

Karen my B/G twins will be 9 in a few short weeks - how time flies!! We're taking my oldest to college on Tuesday :( I'll really miss him even though he's excited to go.

rmlanza - your pooch is so cute. Such big eyes LOL. And I love the name Sage. Rosemary will go so well with that.

Chase slept till 5 this morning so we're getting there.
