Yikes! Don't have granite installed! Please read my sad story

You may remember that we had granite installed in our new home. Now, we've been living here for about 6 weeks and I'm looking into some way to wrap our granite--close it off for our safety (and my sanity).

I'VE BROKEN 8 DIFFERENT DISHES, GLASSES, DECORATIONS......you name it...I've broken it on our granite. Sheesssshhh, who in the world would've thought that granite was so HARD???

Why aren't there warnings about THIS for granite? I have this stupid $60 pumpkin tureen that I bought while we were building. It made it through of year of storage in our garage...it made it through the move to the new house and didn't get damaged. It took me unpacking it out of the styrofoam box on the granite for it to break! LOL

I've had granite for 2 days and so far I haven't broken anything...and today I spent all day putting dishes and glasses in. It didn't occur to me that I may have have to pay more attention. I've had tile floors in my kitchen forever, and believe me over the years I don't even want to think of the # of things that have shattered into a thousand pieces!

Oh, Jan...I hope you know that my post was meant to be funny. I love my granite but I can't believe how many things I've dropped on it!

Frank, I agree with Josh... you do have a right to be disappointed if what you were shown is not what you received. You did pay good money for the bulb, after all. But looking at it another way, the ending is happier than any of us might have imagined... and a whole group of people get to enjoy the beauty that is Naranja! It also gave us opportunity to talk a little, and to get to know each other better. I found someone who can sympathize with what I go through, and I can sympathize with his situation. I didn't know before this thread that Josh has MS. And before this season, I didn't know what a great person you were, Frank, and what a wonderful sense of humor you have! You always make me smile, and more often than not, laugh... you have a unique way with words! :-) Having nursed my 73 year old Mother through leukemia, I know how difficult it is to care for an ailing parent. I wish you and your Mom the best, Frank. You're at a difficult crossroads in life. My Mother was almost lucky that her cancer was acute... she didn't suffer long. I'll always miss her, but reality is what it is. It was her time, and we were fortunate to spend several very wonderful months together before she got really sick. I'll always treasure those memories. Life has a way of throwing those curve balls at us, and we can either stand tall and take the pain, gaining strength and wisdom from it as it adds to our character... or we can curl up in a little ball and miss out on the beauty and all the little things that are mixed in with misery, pain and hard times. Every day I want to curl up into a little ball and cry... but where would that get me? Nowhere fast. And so, I put on my big girl shoes and face whatever the day has to bring. Some are good, some are great, and some aren't... but that's life. Today, I got to see that my common Red Lion has pushed its first scape past the neck of the bulb, and it won't be much longer until those lovely red blooms start to show themselves! And, I dug out two books that I haven't read yet, so I'm looking forward to sitting down tonight with some hot coffee and my reading glasses... Certain Prey and Chosen Prey, both by John Sanford, await my perusal. Oh, and we had some excitement today as one of our water hydrants burst and started spraying water all over the sidewalk and garage! Another project that was doled out to some local idiot claiming to be a professional... because the owner couldn't wait for my husband to get to it, moving through his long list of projects that need doing. Apparently, the guy didn't set the inner rod correctly, and it broke the outer casting. I don't know... I'm no plumber. My poor husband is out there as I write this, waist deep in a cold, muddy hole... playing with hydrant parts and piping. He's less than thrilled, as you can imagine. But I digress... Frank, you did a great thing bringing that bulb to the home for your Mom and her friends to enjoy... it was almost a blessing in disguise that you weren't happy with the color saturation. So, you see... things always have a way of working out... I call it karma. :-) Do not be a bit sorry you began us on this journey! It's been both fun and a learning experience... and I always enjoy a chance to share a little more, and learn a little more. And, Josh... in life, we have choices... and we can choose to take what we've been given and make it into something good. It all depends on how we look at it. My disease and injuries have given me something I never would have thought... a chance to slow down and truly look at and enjoy the wonderful little things we never notice when we're so busy, and we take life for granted. For example, during growing season, I force myself to rest often... and I see tiny little hummingbirds building a nest, or drinking nectar from the flowers in the garden. I watch praying mantises hunt, and I enjoy the scent that hundreds of different roses make when they're mixed in a garden setting, and a breeze brings it all to my nose. At night, I see bats against the moon as they hunt their prey, and I hear the pair of giant owls talk back and forth in the woods across the road. I'm very lucky. Really very lucky. If I had a different life, I'd never get to see or hear or smell or enjoy any of those things. I'd be too busy rushing through my days, barely noticing what Nature tries so hard to show me. As I get older, I realize how short life truly is... and how little time we actually get to be here, in our lives. I don't want to ever regret my life. I don't want to miss the important things, or the beauty, or the love and friendship being offered all around me. Nobody ever said any of it would be easy... but... it doesn't have to be as hard as we sometimes make it, either. So... take a deep breath... and be glad you were given the opportunities that you have, and the ones that await you. Life is sometimes ugly, and messy, and hard... but it's just as wonderful, and just as lovely and joyful.. as long as we are willing to give a little in order to receive a little, and we take the time to let all the good in. Ok... my fingers are tired, and they hurt. I'm going to go pour that cup of coffee, grab my glasses, and I'm going to bury my mind in a good story. And lest I forget, the pictures offered by Josh are just lovely! Sweet Lilian is one of my personal favorites. And everyone else, like Donna, has brought interesting and wonderful perspectives to this thread. I'm glad to be a part of it. :-) And... I would love to go on a Clivia growing journey with you, Frank... I've got two mixed in with my bulb collection, and they are part of the Amaryllidacea family, if I've got the spelling right. It looks wrong, but you know what I mean, I'm sure. In case anyone is interested, I'm including my 2011 garden photo album... link below. My old Boxer having siezures - I don't know what to do

I have an 8 year old Boxer, Millie, that had her first seizure just over a year ago. It was long and violent and tortuous to watch lasting well over 3 minutes. I immediately took her to the vet and he started her on Phenobarbital and Valium. She had several more smaller ones until the levels were where they needed to be. In the year since she's had dozens, some worse than others, and we've added Potassium Bromide to the mix. She continues to have small focal seizures lasting a few seconds almost daily. She was hospitalized last month with Pancreatitis. While there she had one larger and one smaller seizure. Since she's come home she seems to be deteriorating. She sleeps most of the days away. She has difficulty walking, stumbles or falls when she stands still for more than a few seconds, bumps into things and has fallen down the stairs. She seems to be losing control or strength in her hind legs. Last night she fell asleep at my feet and then couldn't stand or walk for a couple of minutes when she woke. This morning, on the other hand, she came as close to running as she has in a while to go outside and potty and play for a moment. It was brief. She's eating well, looks and sounds a good as ever which makes it that much harder to wonder "How much is enough for her?" I guess that's what I'm looking for, advice on "enough". She is our absolute favorite person in the world and is loved beyond measure. As terrified as I am about her leaving us, I am more afraid that she's suffering as she is. I've never had to even consider this for a pet so I'm lost to the rationale of it. How do you know when they've had enough?

Hey Missy (waving~) You guys are very perceptive! The color swatches on the wall are color matches to two different tiles. I wanted to see how dark the tiles would make the kitchen so I took them to Home Depot and did a color match. Of course tile is so much different than paint but the overall darkness is all I was concerned with. The paint by the mixer is the center 4x4 tile and the darker one was Stellar Gloss in "Bellini"...I ruled that one out as too dark based on the paint. Suzyq - I actually cut up some of our floor tile but didn't like the look at all..too dark and much too much texture/coarseness. Great thought though! Annie- I've played with several greys but prefer the brown/grey the most...standard greys just don't look quite right. Kate- family doesn't care for the scale of that tile. wow it would be so easy to install that one though! The price is awesome as well. I'm still looking at it. I wish it were a tad less creamy though. Creams seem to muddy up the granite. Pricklypear....LOVE that green color but have been down that road and failed (bought 60 sq ft of tile and ended up not liking it one bit ...ugh) I agree the white is too stark. Thank you for your comments. I'm loving my kitchen but this final detail is still making me kinda nuts! I know any of the tiles (even the white) would look lovely. I just need to pull a trigger and commit to one. I'm very afraid of making a mistake here b/c I know we won't re-do the b/s anytime soon...if ever again! I think I'm going to call Fireclay and see if they'll send me some samples of a shade lighter than the malt tile... and check on pricing again! Thank you , all!!!!

I get the feeling from reading quite a few of these granite threads that these companies all do it slightly different. My fabricators had the holes drilled at their shop, and had me keep my drawers in place when they installed. It would have been a fairly clean installation except for the fact that they had to router the sides of my sink base to accomodate my large sink. Sawdust got all over the contents of the immediate drawers (thankfully the drawers were in place so that the glides didn't see any of that). This doesn't answer your question about how to tape the glides, but is just an observation... Good luck!!

granite bubble wrap off ebay is the answer! It comes in 24inches wide on a roll so it fits any counter. AND it comes in 20(count em!) of the most popular granite patterns! Save yur dishes! The only drawback is that you can't cut on it! Your cats will love you for it! :)

Granite bubblewrap gives off radon :)

That's too bad. I've had granite for 4 1/2 years and haven't broken anything on it (yet). I've had a glass fall on the floor and break, but nothing has broken on the counters. I'm pretty careless, so I'm actually surprised I haven't broken a lot of stuff.

Blue- that is not NOT TRUE!! the granite bubble wrap doesnt give off radon- thats a nasty rumor begun by the glassmakers- so we will just keep buying new glasses when the granite lashes out and breaks our dishware! fairy talebaby- dont feel bad- I broke both not one, both of my irreplaceable rare molded glass goblets that my grandmother gave us for our wedding. Gone-nothing but chunks! Havent broken anything since.

LOL...I'm glad some of you feel my pain...and my humor! You know, it also makes it hard when you're looking for broken glass on the countertop...only to be fooled by the chunks of sparkly inclustions in the granite!

You should have gotten marble -- it's softer and etches, but it won't break as many things. ;-)

Actually, laying down bubble wrap or even a towel while unpacking is not a bad idea. You handle more things and the unwrapping is more likely to allow something to slip than normal use.

I have a different problem. I bought some extra glasses after we broke a few pre-kitchen remodel. I figured I ought to get them while I could still match them. Now I'm ready to think about something new, but I still have galsses in boxes. At least it's one expense I don't need to worry about for a while.

Although I didn't break anything on the granite countertop since it has been installed I was surprised at how I noticed its' hardness when placing objects on it. Now I'm used to it. The other thing that I notice is that I clean by feel instead of by looks. (Labrador Antique is one those "speckled" granites which visually hide crumbs, etc.)

Shortly after we began using our new kitchen (granite and all), we replaced our glasses with heavier, sturdier ones. Besides the fact that we had broken a number of our old ones prior to the remodel, and were down to too few in the most used size (and they were cloudy and none too nice-looking at that point), they seemed too thin and fragile to use with our granite counters. So, we got nice, new, solid glassware.

Now, I did drop one of our cereal bowls (Mikasa Maxima dishware--the srongest ones they made) sometime last winter, and it hit the granite edge around the sink. Not only did the bowl remain intact, but it took out a small chip of the granite (long since repaired, BTW). Perhaps we should have looked into getting a countertop made out of the same material as our dishes....LOL!

I have one word: Corelle.

We just installed a Cambria (engineered stone) countertop and within a few days we had our first casuality - a delicate glass vase. However, I do think our plates will survive just fine. In 11 years (and 4 kids), we've only broken one plate. This is how you can break a Corelle plate (it's really hard - believe me, my kids have tried): put it on a stove burner with the flame low enough that on one will see that the burner is on. Wait a while and then you will hear it crack.

We broke a corelle bowl once when it fell onto our mexican tile floor. Actually it didn't just break, it sort of exploded into pieces.

I'm getting a chuckle out of this thread because we've had a couple of things break, but they hit the floor -- which we didn't change. The only thing to break that didn't hit the floor was a stemless Reidel wine glass that broke in my hand while I was drying it. The side just came out in a clean line -- pop!

I would seriously consider placing boxes on a table or floor to unpack them until you are used to have "rock" hard counters. I would wait a month or two before unpacking the expensive crystal. That is, unless you are looking for some new stuff. :)

We've had marble tile for about a year. I haven't broken anything on it so far, but I did manage to break a wine glass by hitting it on the bottom edge of the cabinet last week, and last month one of the good crystal glasses slipped out of my hand as I was reaching for it on the floor- it bounced, then shattered on the hardwood.

I've had Silestone for over 5 years and I think I've broken one glass when I dropped it on the counter. I bang the edges of my Mikasa plates on the counter often when loading the dishwasher and I always cringe, sure I've chipped the edge. But so far no chips.

As I get older I find I drop glasses at the fridge water fill up thingy - poor tiles are cracked - good thing the tile guy left a few extra tiles for replacement purposes.

We had beautiful white laminate that lasted 12 years before we got tired of the total white sterile look and not many broken dishs - just a few chips. We just put granite tops in and they look great!

Do you think maybe we should go to BPA free plastic glasses or what?

It is kinda scary after a few glasses of good wine setting them down on the granite with the big clunk sound - should I stop drinking wine now or get rid of the granite?

Another new granite problem - my cat will not stay off the countertops - she loves them! Do you think it is the cool slick feeling or is she radon intoxicated? I wonder how short her life expectancy will be? I may shorten it myself if she doesn't stay off them!
