Help me pick a Green Ellen Kennon Paint Color for dining room

I have decided to paint my dinning room a nice sage/grey green. I have white trim and a chair rail with picture frame molding below and hardwood floors. I am thinking about Ashen Green or Lichen from Ellen Kennon's line but cannot decide. Does anyone have any photos or experience with these colors?

Here is lichten. It is greyer and moodier than ashen green. This pic is without a flash, so the pic's color is a tad darker than real life.

I purchased EK color in ICI Dulux paint 8 years ago and it's held up beautifully. The two colors I used have no color shift so it was essentially a custom color purchase. But I expect the base is different today as there was a good deal of off-gassing for several weeks back then as the paint cured. Wondering if the problem you encountered could be the paint store? I'd take the paint back there with the photos for replacement. Kennon basically sells her color formulations for a surcharge. She's not furnishing the base. I know everyone loves Ben Moore paints and I found great colors with them. But two years later the color had pooped out, some of the paint was peeling and we had to repaint. I went with Farrow and Ball which is mixed in their factory, not any paint store. It provides the best surface texture and wears beautifully and is so low VOC there is no odor whatsoever. It's more expensive but worth it in my book. The estate/matte paint will burnish if scrubbed (thought not otherwise) and I was able to spackle and touch up ook paint hanger holes. I thought I would post an update to this thread. Ellen mentioned this thread in her blog, this thread was linked. My daughter did use her paint to paint several rooms. She talked to Ellen on the phone and really enjoyed their conversation. She said Ellen was very helpful. She painted her bedroom Gustavian Gray. She gave Ellen the room size and Ellen told her to buy 3 gallons but 2 was plenty. She never even opened the 3d gallon but of course was unable to return it. That kind of hurts when it's $50.00 a gallon. I don't know why the amount was so off, perhaps my daughter gave incorrect dimensions. Anyway, my daughter is very pleased with this color. It's very unusual. It's not really gray but it is. It also looks kind of blue and kind of green. I personally don't like it very much but I guess that doesn't matter since my daughter does. She painted an office Olive. This color took two plus coats to cover since it is darker. I like it and so does my daughter. She painted her family room and kitchen buttercream. I really like this color. Again, it looks different depending on the light. Sometimes it looks like a soft yellow, sometimes more beige. I like it better in the family room then the kitchen, however. My daughter's cabinets are maple and have a yellow tone. I think the wall color is too close to the cabinet colors. It looks okay but I would prefer more contrast. But again, my daughter is happy with it. It is a pretty pleasant color. Ellen told her to buy 2 gallons but it took 3. I'm not sure why the amount was off, but it wasn't a problem to buy another gallon. As for whether I can tell a difference between this paint and regular paint...honestly I can't. It's nice paint. It went on well. It looks very nice but I can't really say it looks better then the paint in my house that is Sherwin Williams and Behers. Maybe it's me because so many people seem to think it looks different but I don't really see it. One thing my daughter said she liked was that there was enough choice of colors but not too many choices. I understand what she means. When you go to Sherwin Williams there are dozens of beiges for example. It's easier to pick colors when there are fewer colors to pick from. Two many colors can be overwelming but Ellen has enough but not too much.

It depends a LOT on the color of EK paint. I would call her and ask. It shows up in some of my EK paints, not in others.

jockewing I had posted these photos of my office on the other thread (about Gustavian Grey) where you had also appealed for photos of Lichen. The ceiling is EK's Pumice. The sky was dark and stormy at the time so the color appears less green as IRL. The color is actually a soft greyish green. Definitely green rather than grey IMO.

Here is my Ashen Green - I love it!! This is a north facing room so it doesn't get a lot of light and the room is bright bc of the paint. I also put it in my basement bathroom - a room with no windows and it is still beautiful.

Ashen, Lichen, or even Sage could be good colors to get sample pots and test.

All the pix here are just beautiful!

Hoyamom, your last one looks like it could be in a magazine! You should send it to Ellen for her website (if you haven't already).

Here is our study in Lichen. The ceiling is EK's Pumice. Although the room has natural light from French doors to outdoors the light is never good for photos in there, as the doors open on to a tropical courtyard that is very shady! Still, I hope it helps. I think Lichen is a lovely, soft green.

Thank you everyone so much!!! the photos are spectacular. I'm definately sold on the Ashen for my dinning room. Hoyamom-your dinning room is gorgeous!!! I never would have thought to put those color draps w/the Ashen Green. It's beautiful.

I will be using Lichen somewhere in my house as well!!!

ninnyman - I know what you mean about the gold drapes with the ashen green. They do go great with the color. When my painter looked at the paint he just shook his head and questioned why I was using that color in a north facing room. When he finished he was amazed and that turned out to be his favorite color!
Funcolors - thanks for the compliment - I am honored that you like my picture bc I respect your opinion on all things color! Actually EK has several of my rooms on her example pages on her website. The mustard seed, aquas, cognac, lavender mist, parchment and ashen green are on there. I also have used wheat and one of her reds for my half bath. I really like her colors.

Do you think ashen is too dark for a bedroom? Western light from french doors and two more windows and one north facing window. I Live in NYC (many gloomy winter days)

flyleft -- it is an original oil (or acrylic) on canvas. Sorry, I don't know the painter's name. My parents bought it over 30 years ago. Ironically, I never liked it until I put it on this green wall.

scanmike - My windowless basement bathroom was painted in Ashen Green and it isn't that dark. I would suggest you try a small sample of it and see if it is too dark for your purposes.
I think it is my favorite EK color.

is it better to order the larger swatches or sample cans to get a sense of the color in your home.?

I went ahead and got the sample pot and painted it on my own sample board so I could move it around.
Did you check EK's website - there's another picture of my dining room and a few other pics of Ashen Green. Here is a picture of Edgewood Green and Ashen Green compared side by side.

Here is the before and after!! Paint really makes a difference!

Oh wow, hoya, you do have some EK mojo goin' on, lol! :D Very gorgeous!

I always get/send sample pots with the large 8.5 x 11 inch hand-painted swatch from EK.

At one time they were offering even LARGER hand-painted swatches, maybe 17" x 22" or something. I can't remember the dimensions but I recall you had to ask for the super-sized swatches I don't think they are listed on the EK website anywhere. (I could be wrong about that tho)

Yes, scan - the browner one is the Edgewood. I was really torn between the two but the Ashen really pulled out the colors in the chairs I had. I hated the fabric on the chairs and then when the walls were painted the chairs really popped and I love them now.

Beautiful colours and rooms!

I'd being going with Ashen green for a dining room and Lichen for a bedroom. Lichen is so soft... gorgeous!

You can't go wrong with any of these shades!
