new entry way needs some windows

we are moving a 12' slider to the back of the house (where the view is) and moving the official entry into it's space.

i loved that slider in it's original space because it gave me full light on that western wall.

now we'll have the entry door centered on that wall, it's going to be very dark unless i add some windows around it.

the house is modern farmhouse, dark shingles and white trim.

the interior ceiling height is 7', so no transom windows, sadly.

i think i'll put operable windows on either side of the door, what would you do?

btw, entry door is wood with six divided lights in upper third.

I've seen windows flanking doors before. Does something like this strike you?

that's what i'm looking for! we even have the arbor and patio similar to this picture.
those appear to be narrow dbl hung windows, that should allow for a bench inside under those windows.

Are we talking about the "entry" right at the front door? Or the space up on the step up area toward the stairs. Basically, though, it's the base of the table that will somewhat define the style. The more rustic, it becomes more "Mountain lodge" and the more refined it can go modern, contemporary or even more "transitional". They are also pretty expensive so before you invest money there, figure out how much you want to or can spend now, and then start selecting things you like and create an "Ideabook" here on Houzz. That will help you "define" which style direction you like. You can "like" a number of styles, but ultimately one will become more apparent than others.

I never understand why decks are not the whole width of the house but I need to see what you are doing with the windows and please no round window on that house. I need a lot more info and some clue as to your style . BTW pretty big to be called a cottage what is the blocked off space on the left ? IMO hot tubs are best when they can be accessed from the master bedroom and I need better pics all the windows should match I see dark trim on some not on otheres really not sure what the plan is. I have no problem with the railing and think it will look fine with thegray siding . Are those all sliding doors on the top floor to the deck?

Here's a pic of our porch door with full size sidelights. It's not heated space, so the single pane windows are installed over the screens for the winter. I don't have a close up but will take one tomorrow, here's the view from the backyard.

Aw, thanks awm03, yes, we designed it around the door (vintage, picked it up at a garage sale for $5) and the transom, which came from an auction. A fabulous company in NNY, Vintage Doors, took our drawings, the door and transom, and fabricated the sidelights and porch panels. There are single pane windows in for the winter and screened panels for the summer.

fallingwaters, nope, we're not on Paradox Lake, but I do know it well (used to drive from BTV to Albany, NY all the time), it's a beautiful area.

Wow, Sandy, that was some $5 find! I can see why you designed around it and it looks like it was all meant to be together.

If you were not looking to put a bench beneath the windows, you can also consider full view glass doors to flank the actual front door. I have seen it done and it is dramatic. You need to have a lot of space though. Operable sidelights are another option.
