With out visuals, pictures are worth a thousand words you know, I can only guess, but personally I'd divide the rooms using a wide piece of trim between the two wall colors. If your trim is stained you might want to run the trim up and over the ceiling.
Can you share pictures? I'm in lots of pain right now (neck/spine) so my brain isn't too clear and pictures really would help. I could do a virtual for you that could help you decide too.

Its hard to get the whole space in one big picture and most of these are "before" pictures from before we did the refinishing. I hope its enough for you guys to get an idea. Its mostly one big rectangle.

I'll try to post a picture of the rug I have chose and a couch cushion (the whole couch is in the garage at the moment) so you can get an idea of the colors we are working with. That is assuming I can find the digital camera.

I can certainly understand you wanting to differentiate the two areas with different colors; we had a similar arrangement in a former house, but we did have a formal entry. We treated all areas the same because it was one room.

I think you could do the two walls in the dining room a darker shade of the same color you use in the living room, but I think it would look too disjoined to use a gold in one and a green in the other. I would suggest an accent wall, even though I'm not a fan of them, but you have that closet on that far wall, and an accent wall would also accentuate that.

This is all just MHO. Hopefully, you'll get some feedback from others here who are more knowlegeable about use of color than me.

Thanks for your input Dee. I wsa kind of thinking that in the living room, the wall with the small window and the wall directly across from the front door would together act as an accent wall. I would paint above the closet the same color as the living room walls. I could be way off. My thought is that an accent wall is to draw attention to one wall in a large room. But although it is one large room, it has two different purposes.

That said, if I were to do an accent wall, it would probably be the one across from the dining room (with no window/doors on it) which would be where the TV will go if I am ever crazy enough to sign up for cable again.

While it's difficult to say for sure since your pictures don't include the furniture in place nor the rug, my recommendation would be not to divide up the space visually too much with the different paint colors and/or trim. As you say your space is small, having a single unifying color will make your rooms feel more expansive, plus if you need to borrow space from one room for the other, such as seating for a larger group in the dining room, it will be more cohesive. I think grouping the LR furniture around the rug will unify that space. Adding a second rug below the dining room table will help ground that room as well. Once you add decor, paintings, art, etc. it will look lovely.

That said, if you have your heart set on having a different paint color, I would think more in terms of an accent wall since the rooms are not competely separate.

I forgot to say, very cute house! Another thing: if you use floor to ceiling curtain panels in your green or red color on the small window, and extend them beyond the window so you maintain the entire width of the window for light, most of that wall will have your color. Or, you can always just paint it and see if you like it!

We stayed at a hotel in Myrtle beach last week and the dining room was separated from the living room with paint and molding and was quite clever.

We stayed in the newly remodeled unit and it was much nicer than most of the pictures.

It's just one long room with the kitchen at one end, then dining, then living area.

After seeing your space I have to say I'm with Val. It is what it is and trying to make it look like two spaces will only make them both look small. It's like a short person looks best in all one color.

We have 3 wall colors throughout our home: Stuart Gold, Confederate Red and Olive Branch*.
We pretty much have an open floor plan so all 3 colors can be seen from some of the rooms. At some points we changed wall colors at outside corners and it works for us.

Now, without furniture, area rugs and accessories the rooms could look like the inside of a circus tent, but with the finishing touches the different wall colors just flow from one room to the other without looking garish.

* The colors are not this bright in real life...don't know why they photographed this way.

I want to reiterate what valinsv said.

In a small house, it is better to stick with one paint color, and to use area rugs and furniture to define separate spaces. If you're married to the idea of different paint colors, then consider an accent wall, but I'd still keep the colors in the same family.
