So for now, I would tend to keep the old drapes, assuming the PO had some reason for going with those. Changing fabric or mounting or design of drapes can dramatically alter the style, so you can use the old ones to see if they perform the function you need and then make your own style decision later. At least you'll have hardware already, unless you decide to change that too. The overhang may protect you from the morning sun in summer as the sun will be higher, but I'm guessing there will be some issues, if only because of heat radiating in from the warmed up patio outside. To keep our house cool in summer it's essential that we block the east-facing windows all morning for similar reasons. So if it's just the sun shining in, you could have long blinds that you pull down part way while the sun is there. But if it's a more radiant heat problem, you'd need something full length. The other option for cooling of course is to strategically plant trees outside, but it depends what kind of space you have for that, and it doesn't provide immediate relief. Comments (6)I generally prefer minimal or no window coverings (except in the bedroom and my woman cave), but I live close to a street and neighbors, so I have flat panels on the lower half of my double living room windows. I love them! This is my second set. Someone might come up with a more elegant solution, but I wanted to be able to open mine on sunny days so I have them hanging from rings sewn into each upper corner, and when I open them I let them hang in folds on the outside (since there are 2 windows in each unit there is an outside.) I made mine, and this set I smartened up and lined them (just attaching the lining at the top.) The sun really fades! Comments (5)The couch isn’t butted against the wall. There’s space to walk comfortably behind. I have thought about Roman shades, but I was trying to go a little less expensive being we just moved into our newly built house and want to save some money again after this huge investment. I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet. I have two sets of these windows, so I’m looking at around $2000 I think just for these. Not including the rest of the house. I guess one thing at a time. 🤷🏼♀️...See Morexantippe
