Are you a stained glass artist? If not, I am not sure how you plan to alter it. You can't just "take out" the flowers and put in vines. Color matching the glass will be almost impossible unless you hire a pro or are one yourself. I think it is pretty as is and very much in keeping with your bed and upholstery. If you are determined to change it, it will cost you way more than $3. It would probably be better to just resell it if you don't like it enough as is and I bet you can get way more than you paid.

I think it is the brass that puts this in a 70s era and doesn't match your taste. Not comfortable with the find for your beautiful bedroom.

You might paint the area black and see if this changes the look. Also, stained glass paint works well and would change the colors. If using the clear glass colors, the existing glass would show through. And red might be orange on yellow. Playing with it wouldn't hurt $3, just some time.

From what I can see of your bedroom in that small dark picture,it would add a splash of color. Your head board which looks like vines to me would relate to this piece. I would keep it the way it is.

emagineer.....brass? Do u mean the color of the glass? The metal is silver in color, like the artist never finished and painted the metal black like they usually do. The solder joints aren't even buffed flat, they just puddle. Makes it "hand made" and not mass produced, so I don't mind.

So I should use stained glass "paint" and paint the metal black, then darken the yellow rose to a rust shade.....that sounds like a plan!!!!!! :0)

That piece of stained glass is gorgeous as is. Painting what is a lovely piece of stained glass would be a crime. you'd end up with what looks like a plastic immitation.

It would certainly go with all the vines on your bed Frame, and color of the glass's frame is close to the color of your bedframe Your room and decorating colors are mostly neutrals and it would add a splash of color.

If you really don't like it then sell it but please don't try to paint it and destroy it. You may have paid $3 but it is worth more that that

I can't see an "easy" solution for changing it in a way that would improve it, even if it did make it "match" better somewhere. I think painting it would make it tacky, to be blunt. Currently, it's charming - and oddly, its best features are exactly the things you don't like. Roundness IS feminine :-)

I would either use it as is, or resell it/donate it back and let it find an owner whose tastes match it.

You can darken the lead and soldered areas by applying a patina.

maddielee......YES!!! I found a picture of a subject matter like mine on Ebay & the metal IS a dark patina. It does help! altho it is square which is less fem....:0) Framing it up in a darker stained glass frame maybe? An oval within a square?

You can purchase bottle of black patina at a stained glass store or on line. You just rub it on with a rag, whipe it down and then clean the glass with soap and water and dry.

I think karin, oilpainter, and roseabbey are right! Your plans sound very expensive (adding a stained glass rectangle around the existing piece). Why not just find one that you like and buy it? By the time you do over this one, you will have spent almost as much as a custom piece which would be exactly what you want. It is a great find at $3, but not if you don't really like it.

I've been looking at stained glass for years, always thought with 38 windows in my house I would some day own 1 or 2. But, what I've found is......the opaque glass blocks the light. Sooooooooooooo......this piece had see thru gold colored glass that let light thru. I had DH hang it up. I've had the same view for the last 19 years, this will give me a new "view". It's a cold(17deg. fah. snowy Colorado day)

PS: I should add that it's still too feminine, I'm out of my comfort zone here(it reminds me of those 80's water beds with glass in the headboard shelving)......but the $3 price tag was a motivator to pick up a deal and just "see" if it works. I'll try living with it for awhile before I try doing anything with it.
