I suppose that adding extensions to the legs cannot hurt anything. If you decide it looks terrible, then you can try again. So... - Remove the top first. It should be screwed to the aprons from underneath from your picture. Store the top in some safe place to avoid dinging it as you work. - Choose a profile for the extension by drawing it on paper or cardboard stock. were it me, I'd go to the extent of drawing the whole leg, then cutting it out so my wife could ok the exact shape. No surprises. Surprises are bad. - Drill the legs and the extensions for a dowel insert. I'd go with at least a 1/2 inch dowel. 1 1/2 inches is deep enough. You can get packaged dowels for this from a local home center or by mail order. Make sure the dowel is just a bit shorter than the total hole depth. Too long of a dowel is bad. ;-) Drilling the table legs is best done with a drill press to make sure the holes are vertical. If no drill press, then do it carefully with a hand drill. Its easy to make a mistake here, so I'd try to find a friend with a drill press if possible. - Shape the extensions as planned. Test fit on the table legs. Make sure you are happy with how it looks now. - Sand and finish the extensions. Shellac might be a good choice of finish. - Test fit again. Put it together. Make sure you are happy before gluing. Use a woodworker's glue when done. Its best to finish before gluing, as its easiest to clean off a spot of glue after the finish is applied. You don't need too much glue anyway. I see a couple of remotes, so must be a tv in the room. Sectionals are informal, good for laying down watching tv and relaxing if deep enough. But for regular siting: sofas will always sit better. Where the sectionals come together is the most awkward siting position because the side along those cushions is part of the frame thus: Its a hard edge, and its not that way on sofa, so sitting on the both ends of a sofa is comfortable, but a sectional only comfortable place to sit is next to the arm. A few high end sectionals, one style by Century Furniture they make the open ends of the seat a spring edge, this helps some in making that seating area more comfortable, but that ups the cost of the sectional considerable. If the room is formal more for guest and entertaining= keep the sofas, they will give you more comfortable sitting areas, if its a family room for watching tv and relaxing then a sectional can work.

If you're not happy with the lamp you can replace it, but from what I can see, it's blue and seems to coordinate with the rest of your room. I would just replace the shade unless, like I said, you don't care for the lamp.

Totally depends upon your style -- more casual or more formal -- and your budget. Agree that round is likely going to be your best choice so you're not knee knocking and stumbling over the table ... but you might consider a round ottoman -- even a storage ottoman, either with a flip top for a table or, depending on the surface of the ottoman, to be used with a tray for a table surface. The price range is from "big box store" price to well over a thousand or more if leather. Something else to consider: add wheels in lieu of legs to either your table or ottoman so you can easily push/roll it aside as you want to stand up and/or move it over to where it is needed -- and out of the way where it is not.
