I know it's too soon to tell, but I've just had NuHeat installed. It was the one thing that I was absolutely sure I wanted. Of course, it's not all hooked up yet, but just the idea of it makes me smile.

Can anyone give an estimate of cost? It sounds good but I heard it cost a bunch more than traditional heating. Since ours will be in an extension, we have to plan the heat from scratch, so that may make a difference as well. I'd love to hear more about it....

Yes definitely do it if you have cold winters and your budget allows it. I had it only in my master and kids' bathrooms and loved it! I can't comment on the price as that was a new build and we used hydronic heat ( hot water running through tubing) plus it was 8 years ago.

I am planning a heated floor in our kitchen & FR. I asked the same question a while ago and everyone that posted saying they had it was very happy with their decision.

I am leaning towards Warmup brand because they offer wires as well as mats (I plan to use wires), and their prices and customer support were very good. I also noticed that their product is listed as suitable for primary heating, and remember that they told me their wires get a little hotter than other brands. This may be a factor if you are doing an addition.

FYI, using the wires with 2 thermostats to cover about 700 sq ft will be just under $3,000 for materials. A cheap price to pay for warm feet!

Loved mine in the master bath of my previous house. Now in the process of renovating this house and putting it in both the master bath and the kitchen. I also love tile floors and this takes all the chill out of them.

David - I am sure many people will read this and wonder about cost. The people posting in this thread can answer both at once. I have been doing some checking on it, but wanted to hear real world advice and not just what is told by companies selling it.

My electrician put the wire kind in under my tile floor. Supplies and labor cost $650 for a little over 100 sq feet. (didn't go under the cabinets or appliances or into the pantry.) I went ahead and put another heating duct in as well, though, because I was told it would not really heat the room as much as take the chill off the floor. I'll know whether it was worth it or not in, oh, November.

That sounds like reasonable pricing to me. I only have about 750 sq feet to cover. My biggest concern is that a coil or circuit will break and we would have to dig up the entire floor to fix it. Anyone know what the probability of problems are with these types of floors and which type (matts, just wire) are less problematic?

dianalo, thank you for asking about cost. I've been thinking about this if I go with a tile floor. The 3K price quoted above is too much for my budget and I was happy to read that it could be done cheaper.

katsmah - Your cost may be a lot lower depending on the size of your kitchen. My price was to do a kitchen and family room which total about 850 sq ft. A typical 12 x 12 kitchen may only be about 20% of that cost, especially when you remove the portion covered by cabinets.

susanelewis - I suggest that you talk to a few of the companies that provide the mats/wires. I asked a lot of questions, and Warmup was very good about answering them. In particular they told me some companies coat their wires with PVC, but they use teflon. Also, their wires get hotter than the others and that is why their product is rated to be used as a sole heat source (not just to keep the floor warm). Their warranty was longer than most also, but I'm not sure that is a big issue since none of them will cover the cost to tear up and re-tile your floor...
