I need opinions - Which countertop should I choose?

Hi, I am new to the forum.

We are redoing our kitchen with custom white shaker style cabinets. The floors are a dark walnut color and the walls are a light grey but there wont be much walls in the kitchen b/c it will be mostly backsplash which is a light color marble. I cant decide on the countertops. We know we are going to use laminate but I cant decide between the basalt slate honed and the mineral jet in radiance finish. I also have samples of midnight stone. Its hard to tell what it will look like. I've seen pictures of both and I like the sparkle of the mineral jet but I am worried I wont like it in real because I want something really dark. Any opinions? I have pictures but dont know how to put them all here. This is an old picture when the old cabinets were taken out.

I had butcherblock counters in my last ktichen. I cut directly on them. I oiled them with mineral oil. You can oil them with mineral or other food safe oils. Or you can finish them with something like waterlox, but then you cannot cut directly on them. I was fine with the patina from cutting and even fine with the small stain from food dye (making icing for cookies--was too deep for me to be able to sand it out). But I didn't like how they held up near the sink. Perhaps if you are more careful than I am about splashing or perhaps if you oil more frequently or if you chose to finish with something like waterlox, that would take of that issue. Butcherblock is the common term for the kind of wood counters that are like cutting boards so you might find more information by searching on that term. There have been lots of thread on the topic here in the past though I don't remember any very recently.

Hello all you friendly answerers. Indeed I am proud European still. From Scotland. Sinks with draining boards seem to be going out-of-fashion, but there are so many grumbles about oak worktops turning black around the sink, and my cabinet maker asked me please, please don't make me fit a Farmhouse or undermount sink as I would be disappointed when it went black. He recommended a ceramic over mount with drainer. I had a look, but they do not cover the counter behind the taps, and I currently have a similar ss sink on a laminate worktop. The laminate has become damp and swollen. So... I think in time plain old wood would damage too with that sink. That Kohler Vault (Thanks Joseph Corlett) covers the exposed end grain. I have never used a kitchen with a wide single sink, so I am finding it hard to imagine how you drain dishes or lettuce for that matter, without a drainer. Maybe I should travel more!

I have a light countertop with my wood cabinet, but with your backsplash I think the darker one would look very nice. Sometime the backsplash will get damaged when removing the countertop or the new countertop is a different thickness causing a gap. Be sure to discuss this with your countertop person. You will have more options if you change the backsplash too, but there is no need to if your countertop place can make the present one work.

Granite in a kitchen in a house valued at $100,000? NOPE, that's a waste of money. You won't begin to recoup what you spend for it. And everyone is changing out their tile countertops, at least from what I see on this site. (It's that grout, who wants to clean the cooking dreck out of the grout?) I would consider NOT buying a house with tiled countertops in the kitchen, all other things being equal. Some people really prefer stained cabinets over painted. I can like the look of either, but unless you get a true pro to do the job ($$$), it's going to look cheapened. Those cabinets look fine to me, and would not dissuade me from making an offer. It's the curb appeal (driveway) you may want to be focusing on. Oh, and see if you can bleach the floor tile grout in the shower as white as possible - or see if there is a way to make it all look like it's supposed to be one light sand or gray color of grout...

basalt slate honed due to the sheen that is showing on the marble backsplash. It wouldn't look that great to have the sheen of sparkle or glossy laminate with sheen of marble,so I'd go with the honed looking laminate....they'll play off each other,not against each other.[I didn't know they had honed laminate-new info!!]

Basalt Slate. It's one of the few laminates that I find a convincing rendering of stone.

Thank you all for your opinions! I think I will go with the basalt slate. Can anyone who has laminate recommend what edge to get. I like the more modern look of the square edge but dont want to deal with the brown line. I was thinking of getting the D edge which looks almost square but without seam. The only problem is the layout of my kitchen I have a peninsula and I dont think that edge can go around a corner seamlessly. My layout of the counter is an L shape where the peninsula is the bottom of the L. Does anyone have experience with this? I want to avoid as many seams as possible. Here is a picture of the D edge.

Here's a pic of the Formica Ideal Edge, rounded as I think you prefer in your D-edge pic, going around corners and into an inside corner as you describe for your L.

Are you sure you'll get a brown line with a square edge? It's usually a black line, that wouldn't show against the basalt slate. If I'm right about the line, square would be my first pick. Of the shapes mtnfever showed, I actually like the ogee - that I never choose on stone actually. It's sort of cool, and an edge profile I didn't think was possible with laminate.

We chose the square edge but are unhappy that the white shows

GWebbers have told me that the problem could be due to the grade of laminate chosen. In any event, we are very happy with the performance of the laminate, and I hope that you end up with an edege that works for you.
