what should i do with my pullout spice drawers?

i have 3 inch spice drawers on each side of my large drawers underneath my cooktop. i got decorative pilasters that match the legs of my island to put on the spice pullouts. they are very pretty and i don't really want to put a knob on them. any suggestions for hardware? do i need any at all? if anyone has pictures of their spice pullouts, that would be great.

I have seen decorative pilasters for spice pullouts with no hardware on them.

loves2cook- I love the test tube rack. Since it was a gift I suppose it is hard to ask her how she likes it. What a great gift! WILL you be my friend????? My only concern would be putting it down and having it roll away.

Sweeby, where do you find spices in test tubes, or do you keep refilling them (too lazy here)? I have started to buy the half bottles when they are available unless it is a spice I use frequently. I don't find many spices available whole locally. Nutmeg and cinnamon, some seeds, but what else? Many of what I use are dried herbs and I don't think larger pieces last any longer than the smaller. parsley, oregano, thyme, Rosemary, etc. I am struggling with this myself. My old spice storage was a lazy susan in the corner upper cabinet that I now have replaced with a lighted glass front cabinet. I can put a pullout behind the spindle next to my sink or use a regular shelf in an upper cabinet that will make it hard to find the right spices - maybe use one of those stair-type things to raise the ones in back. An upper pullout might or might not work - They are 3" wide and I JUST have 3", but there is a little lip on the adjacent cabinet that may or may not interfer. Considering the high return and restock fees to return something to Rev-a-shelf, I have been reluctant to order one to see, but that might be the best alternative. By the way, I am sympathetic to the 15 yr old spice thing. But in reality, if 15 yr old spices are OK with you, the moderate increased temperature next to a modern stove probably won't matter to you, either. As you can see, I am confronting similar issues, and don't have a solution for you. I will read the posts to see what other suggestions come up, though, and let you know if I see anything that might help. Sue

I agree with you. If you have the space for them in a drawer or upper cabinet, I think it would be much easier to see the smaller spice containers. Having said that, a bottom pull out may be good for larger spice containers or oils, or maybe the pullout could be used for tray storage or something else?

I have a spice pull-out next to our 36-inch range. Residential ranges are usually so well-insulated that damage to nearby cabinetry isn't an issue. I can't imagine it would impact spices and oils if you use them regularly to rotate them out of your supply. My main gripe with the pull-out (base) is that it's just not that functional. The top row is--because I see it from above when I pull it out. But I have to bend over to view the spices on the lower rows. I would not do it again if given the choice. editing to note that you indicated your pull-outs would be at eye level, which is ideal. My problem with functionality wouldn't be an issue for you, then. I am not putting any knobs on mine. It's easy to grab the sides of my decorative pilaster, so none are needed. Here's a picture.....

I am not the best person to offer an opinion on this because I don't have spice drawer pullouts. However, I did have finger pull cabinets (no hardware) in my old kitchen, and after a while they built up grime from opening them with no hardware. If I scrubbed to remove the grime, I took off the protective finish. So I would vote for a knob or pull.

We are getting the same type of spice pull-outs. The thought never even crossed my mind to do knobs on those decorative pieces. Part of the beauty of having those, I think, is that they make the cabinets look more like pieces of furniture instead of cabinets. I think adding knobs would ruin that effect. I don't think I've ever seen knobs placed on those. Never really thought about really using them and pulling them out. Hmm-hope it's not difficult!

This is really weird, I just posted that I had never seen knobs put on the decorative pieces. Immediately after posting, I look over to discuss the topic with DH and he is reading the new This Old House magazine September 2008 He points out on page 30 knobs on the spice rack with decorative posts. So....I stand corrected! SPOOKY!

very spooky.....i just got this from another post but i think it is worth checking out......rmkitchen used finger pulls on her pantry and you can barely see them....they are called Haefele flush pulls.....i'm thinking of going with those because my kd did say that touching the wood on the same spot all the time will cause wearing....just like bluekitobsessed said!! what great input from all!!!!

We have columns on our spice pullouts and no pulls. We did speak with our kitchen guys and consider carefully before deciding to forgo the pulls. The columns were very securely attached with a number of screws, and we're careful to wipe the wood where we grip reguarly (the thick square part on top). As for the wood wearing there, any wear on a catalyzed finished hard wood would be very gradual over a long length of time and would only add character.
