Same with practigal up there, I have to keep a few smaller vacuums around the house because of my two cats. I love them to death, but they both shed enough to make a new cat out of the hair! What I generally do is keep my smaller vacuum downstairs in the little hutch our laundry supplies are in (it's hard to describe - imagine either a very big pantry or a very small laundry room) and keep one upstairs in the room with that exercise bike I never use. I don't know if that helps, but I remember some advice my mom gave me a long time ago - "you never want to store a vacuum near where you eat or sleep", and I think that's a pretty good call!

What is your budget? The pax system will exceed $1k. Pax would be my suggestion too. I have had pax for years and love it. I also have another system from ikea that is a pole based one and I don't like it as much as I like pax. I will try to explain what I think you can do. What is the height of the closets? Pax allows you to get rid of dressers since you can use drawers and pull outs. For the nursery closet, I would use three 29" pax units across the back. What will you store in this closet? Pick and choose as many fittings based on what you would store in it. I would add a mirror on the side walls and hooks on the other side wall for hanging items. The pax units that I am referring to are 24" deep. For the master bedroom, I would use two 39" wide pax units that are 24" deep on the 80" wall. This will give you space to walk into the closet and pull out items in drawers or pull outs. I would repeat this in both closets so each person has their own setup. You can always add accessories as you go along. For the laundry closet, I would deviate from Pax. I would keep your washer and dryer unstacked. I would place the washer and dryer pair on the wall that is 80" deep. Most front loaders are smaller than 30" wide, so I would purchase a 18" wide base cabinet from sekton to store all my laundry products and other supplies. It could also house tools. I would find a countertop to go on top of the washer and cabinet. The wood counter from ikea for an island should be deep enough or you could use the laminates depending on your style. I would use two 39", 15" high sekton wall cabinets on top of the washer dryer and base cabinet. Check with the plumber to see if you can place the water outlet and shutoff valves on the side of the wall. For the other wall in the closet, I would look at Elfa for their 12" deep wall units. This could hold the vacuum cleaner, cleaning items like brooms, etc.. You could also put some drying hooks on the back all in the laundry closet. I will try and post a picture later. Laundry hampers and baskets can also live on this wall. Good luck!

This is hard one. New home build has.. (small farmhouse) We have a pantry and a tall pantry cabinet too.. pantry has vaccum & brushes. We have a small hallway between rooms that has space for officey stuff, charging, counter for snacks for party.. but mostly printer and laptop support stuff.. upper cabinets. We have a dresser in the small main floor bath instead of closet. We have a shoe closet because we like Japan style. We have a large nice coat closet plus a simple mud room with hooks at another entrance and farm boots. we have a homeschool supply cabinet/a matching one for coat closet we have a linen closet/built in in the hallway upstairs that is actually a basecabinet with wood counter and a upper wall cabinet built in (like office hallway) we have a full linen closet outside of bathroom door on this level too sharing the upstairs vac/broom and cleaning supplies we have a shallow shelf with sliding doors in upstairs bath for small items but not a fan of cloth hanging out in the bathroom.. in hallway. interestingly we don't have closets for the kids yet. We want an easy layout with what we have with windows and doors.. vents.. going modern and growing with them style.. we have are farmers but we have a 4' wide door in BR with another 4' wide open curtain place for me.. I like tall dressers and need more places for folding, jeweler and underwear.. have nice pieces that do best folded.. hate closet systems, want light and pretty space instead. Velvet curtains ;) basment is full! We have a plan for dedicated and double checked (insects and others) but want true dressers indtead of tubs and wall stuff. Want to sew and love basement.. don't want walls covered.. want art and more fancy room stuff in basement. Going for dressers for Christmas, sweaters.. and sometimes buffet peices.. do not want a Rubbermaid look! I want to do something amazing with my basement too.. not sure exactly but more living room, play room, art studio with storage much lower than normal storage rooms. Also having a vac & broom in the have closet.

Omigosh, all your complaints about your Meile are just the opposite of my experience with them - although I don't have experience with the Costco model. The upward exhaust bugs me, too, if I get near it, but I like that it's not blowing across the floor moving dust bunnies before I can vacuum them. As far as awkwardness of the hose/handle, try lengthening or shortening the silver metal pieces and see if that makes it easier for you. I've had other canisters and my big complaint was that they'd tip on their sides at the drop of a hat, but I can say my meile has never, ever tipped. It is so easy to pull and flows easily around corners - just a tug on the hose releases it if it gets hung up before getting completely around a corner. One advantage to Costco shopping is they will let you return anything. If you can't make it work for you, take it back! Oops, just noticed this was a revived old thread.
