Imagine the angle of someone outside.....they'd be looking at the highest point of the wall and ceiling...not down near the railing.

Agree. Have him stand outside and you walk around. It might not be an issue. And if it is, I'd go with little sheers on a tension rod.

You could use inside mount tension rods at the top and bottom of each window with sheers stretched between them, then gathered in the middle with a wide ribbon. That would still let in plenty of light. But getting up there is going to be difficult, to say the least.

You know, I completely forgot about the angle issue. You guys are great. I agree that someone walking on the street probably won't be able to see anything below his waist, but the neighbor directly across the street can probably see him from their second floor windows, if they care to.

But for that slight chance, do I really need to do anything? I don't think so. I think you're right. I'm pretty good at stalling (not intentionally; I'm just indecisive).

I think you should get a quote that includes remote controls, to open and close the WTs from a distance. That should put him on to something else....maybe wearing more clothes or just not giving a hoot. My theory is that if the neighbors are that intent on looking, let 'em.

Get him a sexy terry wrap for Christmas...that'll cure him! Or a robe........or as I said, he'll get over it. It's just that THEY see out so they think people can see in. Sigh........I deal with that waaay too much myself...my guy I mean. But....he's improving!

If you decide you still want to do something to those windows, you can turn them into privacy glass yourself.

You can either buy a "frost" spray at the hardware store (this will require masking off the frames first); or you can use Gallery Glass Crystal and just cover the windows in little curlique circles. Since DH is the one worried about it, he can go up the ladder and do it. Either treatment is going to be very inexpensive -- like $5 or less. Both choices will let in the light and give you privacy. All you need is a 30' extension ladder.

I have a couple of transom windows in my family room that look into my neighbor's kitchen (when we planned it we thought the angle wouldn't matter, but turned out it did) and so we wanted to have some privacy, at the same time have the light so the creative folks on the decorating forum recommended wallpaper for windows--it looks like contact paper to make the windows opaque.

I know someone with a similar arrangement and dh feeling the same way. I think it's more the second stories of neighboring houses that can really see much. They just put window treatments on them like any other window. Their choice was sill length curtains and a sheer that is kept closed. Looks very nice.

LOL natal. Yes, that's a window lock. All six windows are functioning, opening windows which is kind of silly. The one that is closest to the "bridge" can be opened but the others would require a ladder and a lot of bravery. I know the builder's guys enjoyed having them open during construction so they could have some cross ventilation but we won't be opening them any time soon.

While I love the idea of spraying the windows, we definitely will not climb ladders as we both have a fear of heights. (Guess you missed the thread about our 17' high smoke detector when the batteries ran low. DH wanted to shoot it--and he's very anti-gun.) Needless to say we don't have a 30' extension ladder but it's a great suggestion for normal people.

Squirrelheaven, I'll have to think about that idea some more. If the sheers won't cut down on light they might work. And they'll look nice from the outside too.

As for the cost of the remote control thingy, I think if he wants it badly enough, he won't care how much it costs. We differ a lot on that point.

Your windows and home are gorgeous. You might consider wood or faux wood plantation shutters. You can leave those with the slats tilted upward if you want or need to, and yet they would let in light while blocking the view from other 2nd floors. Since you're afraid of heights, I'd have them installed, rather than DIY. We had windows in our stairway of a previous home (although not nearly as beautiful as yours!) and one window could not be reached without a ladder. Shutters worked for us, but we also were blocking sun when this photo was made. Your home has such great architecture!

What about hanging some stained glass in front of the lower portions?

I talked with DH about the whole angle issue and, to prove my point, crawled around the upper hallway to see what I could see outside. With my head at the height of the handrail, I could see the second-floor windows of the house across the street. With my head lower, not much was visible. Still, with the lights on in our house at night, it does feel exposed.

I think I had DH convinced until a friend also suggested the remote controlled shades. Whose side is she on?
