Kitchen rail system - Pros Cons

Hi,

Do you have a kitchen rail system? I would love some feedback on pros/ cons, brands to consider, what components, installation feedback etc.

I am considering a kitchen rail system to keep essential tools and ingrediants handy but off the counter. I would love to get some components like cookbook holders, shelfs etc. I have looked at IKEA in person and some others online.

The thing I worry about is always about cleaning. As much as I love open shelving, pot racks, rail systems, knife systems integrated into the counter, and all the various doodads, I just really experience even my 2 cubbies as dust and grease magnets.

So, I guess there's the pro and the con for me. Sorry I am not more help when it comes down to specific systems.

I have one from Lee Valley . It is very well made and quite inexpensive. Also easy to assemble. Here is a pic . I don't have all the accessories that you mention but they have them. Good luck. c

I have a boiler system in my 1960 2 bedroom ranch. I love the way it warms the house, but my only problems/complaints are: 1.) When the heat starts up you can hear the copper fins "clicking" as the expand. This is because the previous owners have them all banged up and at some point I'll have to straighten them all up. 2.) You'll need a humidifier. My house gets extremely dry during winter months and we had to buy several small units and put them in the bedrooms. I wish i had a whole house unit to add humidity, but there is no way to do this using a hyrdonic system.

Ive had a Sunsetter power retractable awning over my deck for about 8 years. It's about 20 feet wide and can extend 10 ft out. With a motor drive and remote control you can extend it any amount you want in less than a minute. This requires a power outlet near it's right hand end (when you are facing the house). It also can be extended or retracted with a manual crank. Installation is somewhat demanding and while I did it myself with a couple of helpers it is not a quick or easy job. It is a heavy assembly and It took the best part of a day to install. It is very well made (in the USA) of rugged aluminum extrusions, forgings or castings and good quality fabric. We have had no trouble at all with it. One caustion to be aware of - it can act like a big sail in a wind and will try to lift up when the wind gets strong. I fashioned a hold down system to anchor each outboard end to my deck rail when I wanted it extended on days with 7-8 knot or above winds. When retracted it is tolerant of 70 knot winds at least. Living in PA, we have a 60's built ranch home with no ductwork. My husband had one of these systems put in this summer (Fijitsu wall mounted system) to cool our main living area. It works great. It is quiet and works very well cooling most of the house although we only needed it for living/dining/kitchen. I had hoped for the best when I reluctantly agreed because I HATED how it looked. I had seen these units in other peoples homes and hated them then. People (especially contractors) assured me that I would get over this. It has been since June and I still hate how it looks. When friends and family (admittedly mostly female) see this unit, their first reaction is negative on how it looks. They try to be nice about it but when I ask their honest opinion, they say it is ugly. I really regret having this installed. The few short months that we use it was not worth the eyesore it is in our house. I am trying to come up with ways to hide this beast for the 8 or 9 months of the year that we don't use it. I am writing this only to forewarn anyone who has concerns about installing these units because of the looks. My advice would be if you have white walls and high ceilings, then this would likely be less noticeable. If you have lower ceilings like I do and have a wall color other than white or light, this is going to be noticeable. Also, I would suggest do whatever you can to find a wall that is not a focal wall to install this beast. My was installed on a focal wall which only adds to the problem.

We've been distributing US Cabinet Depot cabinets to our customers for years and have never had a single warranty claim for issues with their HDF doors. I cannot speak to other companies' HDF quality or their finish quality. If the finish is thin, water will get in. If the finish is done properly and meets the appropriate Mil thickness, then water will never get to the HDF. Many US-made cabinets have to adhere to strict finish requirements and use Water Borne finishes, or types of lacquer that are thin and allow moisture. US Cabinet Depot cabinets have a great finish and use conversion varnish. I've always been an "all-wood guy" until we started working with USCD. Once cabinet line we used to distribute constantly cracked at the stile and rail joint. We were always having problems. So it is also very much about the manufacturer and the process they use for the materials they use. A "Real Wood" cabinet door can have lots of issues if the wood is not properly dried, or glued. And a company that uses HDF will have problems if the finish is thin, or water based. I recommend US cabinet depot as we've never had a single issue. If you're going to buy cabinets with HDF doors, just make sure the finish is either Conversion Varnish or Solvent-Based PU Urethane. NOT waterborne or lacquer.

My thought is that this would not be in the hood/ cooktop area as I share the concern about grease and dirt. I was thinking more about prep area.

They are very appealing for some reason but I never have a good spot for them. I did have a short section of one (the least expensive Ikea one I think) next to my cooktop attached to the side of an oven cabinet and it was fairly useful for a few bottles, seasonings, and pot holders. Then I remodeled and put it in the garage over the laundry sink to hold stuff for dishwashing during the remodel and it was REALLY handy there. (This was a setup where I was washing dishes in a dishpan on top of a milk crate and draining them on the washing machine.)

Anyway if you've got a spot for it and stuff to hang from it, even if you decide you don't like it, the rail will still be innocuous and not bug you (especially that cool flat one!), go for it. I like the styling on the Lee Valley one but now have to check out the one you linked.

(Keep in mind this is coming from someone who just nailed a bunch of skillets to some cabinets, though...)
