Comments (4)Electrocute, see the site below for a good explanation of the basic differences between machine-made and hand-knotted rugs: http://www.jacobsenrugs.com/m-made.htm On hand-knotted rugs, the back of the rug is just as clear, vivid and detailed as the front, regardless of material (wool, silk) or knot count. On your rug, however, note the pronounced difference between the the clarity of the front and the obscured design on the back. I don't have any silk rugs, but here is a site that shows many (in case there is any question of how the backs of silk vs. wool rugs may differ), that shows close-ups of the backs of them: http://www.shrugs.com/rug_fullview.cfm?rug_id=1539 Go to the detailed picture that shows the tape-measure (on the far right), and click on it to see a close-up of the back of a silk rug, and compare to your rug. Note also the fringe attachment on your rug, and compare to the photos in both sites, particularly in the first site. Old and worn rugs sometimes have sometimes lost their fringes (in which case, a new fringe can be added on to restore the effect) but if your rug has not been used and has instead been stored for almost 90 years, that would seem unlikely. Anyway, if there are rug shops in your area, you should take the rug in for an opinion, if you are really interested. If it turns out to be an old, hand-knotted silk rug of some value, then an appraisal would be a good idea, again if you are interested. If it is inconvenient to visit a rug shop, I'd encourage you to post your photos on a site that specializes in rugs, so that more knowledgeable people might comment. Here is one: http://www.turkotek.com/ This site has a discussion forum ("Virtual Show and Tell") where I have seen people post very basic questions about their rugs on occasion....See MoreQuestion about wood stove hoods.
Comments (4)Major hood manufacturers make hood "inserts" including Wolf (wolfdesignguide.pdf) and probably Broan, and certainly ModernAire. An insert is effectively a standard hood without the nicely polished stainless steel exterior. Typically, the cabinet maker would build the exterior box so it matched the cabinets around it. Be sure to pick the insert before any wood cutting takes place. Be sure to understand the cooktop/range/stove requirements for spacing from combustibles before planning the insert cabinet. Specifying the insert itself is another project that should start with reading hood threads on this forum to learn what establishes their requirements, and any make-up air requirements to go with them....See MoreQuestion about a vintage lamp
Comments (25)Judianna's suggestion of "Edison bulbs" got me started looking at various options within that type. Today I bought Better Homes & Gardens Vintage Style amber glass bulbs with the visible lighting elements. They're fairly small, and only 5W (40-watt equivalent). I took them home and tried one out to see if it gave me enough light for reading. It did! The only problem (and it's a big one) is I can't look at it. My Lyme-related light sensitivity is pretty bad, and there's no way I could walk around in my bedroom with even one of those lights lit. Not only would looking at the light, even from a distance, be painful, but it would likely result in an ocular migraine. So it looks like I'll have to come up with a Plan B. Meanwhile, I think I'll keep the bulbs and use the lamp in another room for now. PS: The lamp store has apparently disappeared. I'm surprise, as I remember it as a fairly large operation. Maybe it was another casualty of the pandemic....See MoreCircus Peanut
