Another re-purposed Craig's list piece of furniture

Here is another piece I re-purposed for my daughter. I got this beautiful old buffet of Craig's list for 100.00. It is now a tv console. I still have to put a couple of shelvs in the middle section for tv equipment but other then that it is finished. Painted it a satin black then used denatured alcohol and cheese cloth to do the rub off edges, then two coats of satin poly.

Thanks! Funny, initially I was thinking 1930Âs (I donÂt know why, I know little about what styles were made in what eras). But then I thought of the Depression, and decided perhaps not much furniture would have been made during that time. LindaC (and others) how would I research this style? Any books/resources you could recommend? What would make it Jacobean Revival? The bulbous legs? That was the part I wasnÂt sure I liked. But I liked the other detailing so much, I can learn to like the legs. What market would this style have been made for? High-end, medium, low? gracie, I am in the Midwest, Chicago. I was very happy to get a whole set. Most of the others I looked at on CraigÂs list had only the table, chairs, and china cabinet, and I was holding out for a buffet, since that is the piece I use the most. I would have had to buy one separately if it was not part of the set. Since I already have a large china cabinet (oak, I think much older, bought 10+ years ago from a local antique store), itÂs a bit of a tight squeeze with these big pieces. I had to put the walnut one that belongs to this set in my living room, but surprisingly I think it looks nice there. rosie, have you tried CraigÂs list for your set? If I were you (or your sister) I would hold out and keep trying. The gentleman who sold me this set said he had posted it earlier over the summer, and none of the people who were interested would pay cash. The alternative would have been to sell it to an antique store, which was interested, but the price they offered did not meet the minimum he had set in his mind. If you canÂt sell it on CL and itÂs in good shape that would be an alternative for you; or a consignment shop.

I've hired a few people via Craigslist and have generally been pretty happy with the result. Our last cleaning lady was a CL catch, as were the plumber and our former electrician (who doesn't travel all the way up here or we'd still be using him). There are a lot of people placing ads as handymen/women, general laborers, and oddjobbers these days, probably needing to scrounge up a bit more money to make ends meet in this tough economy.

Heat will kill bedbugs as well - I've left CL sofas in my car for a day or two in the heat of summer as well as in the middle of winter - both temp extremes will kill any cooties. It's supposed to be quite warm this week in this area and I assume yours too since you aren't that far away from me - if you could leave it in a closed van parked in the sun on a sunny day, I doubt you'd have to worry about bugs. Smells and such are another story. I've bought a lot of upholstered pieces on CL and at thrift stores and got burned once, with a sofa that had a smell that just wouldn't go away (I smelled it in the store but thought it was just the thrift store background smell that I was smelling). I febreezed it, set it in the sun, put dryer sheets in the cushions -- NOTHING got rid of that smell so I eventually got rid of the sofa. Now I make sure that any upholstered piece I buy passes the whiff test. I also size up the people and the house where it's coming from - if it's a gross looking house or the furniture looks like it's had a hard life, I pass on the furniture. But in the past 2 years, I've bought 2 sofas, a big sectional, and a chair from CL without a problem or any bugs. All of the pieces came from spotlessly clean houses, look brand new and cost about a tenth of what I would have paid for them new so I have only positive things to say about buying upholstered stuff on CL. And re: the bedbug paranoia -- just because you buy something new doesn't mean it can't also have cooties -- most new furniture is shipped over from foreign countries in shipping containers that can harbor bugs. And there was a big stink on the news lately about new mattresses picking up bedbugs on the delivery truck (because its the same truck they use to haul away old mattresses and they often have old mattresses and new mattresses on the truck at the same time as they make all the deliveries/haulaways for that day.) Bedbugs skeeve me out to no end (I make my dh strip and leave his luggage and clothes outside when he gets back from business trips to cities that are known to have a bedbug issue in their hotels) but if you obsess about it enough, you'll be afraid to go anywhere or buy anything, so at some point, you just have to roll the dice and hope for the best.

Just log on to www.craigslist.org and click on your state. Then, scroll through the cities listed and see if your town or one near enough to drive to is listed. Then, you can check out job listings, autos for sale, or even furniture. If there's an active CL in your area, you might even click on garage sales near the weekend. Some people put their garage sales on CL that are not advertised elsewhere. Now, if you are looking for furniture, maybe a dresser, you can either click on Furniture and scroll through the ads, or you can type "dresser" in the search box and just pull up ads that have "dresser" in the message. Hopefully, there will be good pictures and a good contact number for the seller. There's usually a contact email at the top of the ad. Sometimes there's a phone number too. I prefer the ads with phone numbers, since I don't want to wait to have someone contact me by email. Now, if you want to go see the dresser, you just contact the seller and tell them you are interested. Pretty much the same as replying to a newspaper ad. Except the paper doesn't have a picture. You don't pay anything to use Craigslist to buy. And the seller can upload their ad along with up to 4 pictures, also for free. Selling is almost as easy as buying. Once you register with CL, you can post your ad. You need a good tag line........Antique wardrobe with Mirrored Doors $300 for example. Then, write your ad. Make sure you put all kinds of details, measurements, and your price. Think hard about including your phone number. Why not? You WANT people to get in touch with you, you WANT people to come over to see your Antique wardrobe, you WANT to sell it. And if you only have your craigslist email contact number, you could miss that buyer who had to go on to work after emailing you, but is hoping you will contact him to make an appointment. If you sell your wardrobe, be sure to use your email contact with craigslist to delete the ad. You don't want the ad to keep generating calls. And if you can, list your item on a Friday or a Saturday. People are really looking for things on a weekend, so that gives you the most exposure. Your ad will fall off eventually, but it may take a month. Red

I love it! Those buffets are so versatile- I never thought about taking the drawers/doors off. We re did one of those for a changing table for my sister. I had to pay $150 on craigslist. I should have kept looking for a better bargain!

Thanks everyone!... I used Behr paint in satin finish. I just love that paint. I never have a problem with brush strokes showing. So far one quart has done this buffet, a drop leaf table and a coffee table and I still have quite a bit of it left. I put two coats on, let it dry for a couple of days then take small pieces of cheese cloth wet with denatured alcohol and do the rubb off. Then I put one coat of oil based poly, lightly sand, another coat. On the tops of pieces after the second coat I light sand then for the final coat I use rub on poly. With the rub on oil based poly there are absolutely no brush strokes at all, that is great stuff if you have never tried it. I have the final coat to put on the coffee table top then I will post photos of it...I did not keep the doors on the buffet, could not for the life of me think of a project for them but I did keep the drawers. I saw super cute end tables made out of old drawers, add legs and a top with hinges. Haven't had time to make one yet but I will...

I forgot!... @ pps7.. your buffet repurposed into a changing table looks great... and it can be reused later for something else is the best part.. I think you got a great price on it.. I think I pretty much stole mine at 100.00... The lady was so nice, I honestly don't think she had sold anything on Craigs list before because she actually held it for me till I could go nab my husband off the golf course since he had the truck that day, to go get it...She had all sorts of stuff for sale so cheap....They were downsizing to an apartment and selling all sorts of household items. She offered me a nice piano for 200.00. I told her I would check and see if my daughter might be interested in it but she wasn't. I called the sweet lady back and told her so and that I thought she could get a lot more for the piano. I hate to see someone rip themselves off....Anyway I think your price was a great price.. sometimes we can't hold off looking for a better price when something that pretty comes along. It has beautiful lines and legs to it...Debbie
