Tips on how to remove paint from cane backing?

I'm in the middle of a project, and we already stripped the DR chairs. Question is, how do I remove some paint on the cane backing of the chairs? It's mostly on the outer edge of the cane. I think the previous owner spray painted it and made it shabby chic. There's one section of the cane that I put stripper on, and now it's cracked and damage, but not noticeable (yet).

So if you've done this before, any suggestion please? Thanks in advance.

I am all for restoring things, but honestly can't imagine how any chemicals for removing paint wouldn't harm the caning. You may want to keep recaning in mind.

Did the paint and caning get a good bond? I mean, is it possible to take something that is lightly abrasive, like a green kitchen sponge, to slough off the paint?

Don't think I am crazy, but let me just put this out there... Would it be possible to use a golden color wood stain OVER the paint to get it back to cane color? Crazy, but as a last resort if nothing else works, it may be something to keep in mind.

Paint chips, thank you for your reply. And no, I don't think it's a crazy idea. In fact, I was thinking of staining it brown if anything else fails. I'm just worried that it might ruin the caning. But since you reinforced that idea...

I'm going to try to sand it first with a kitchen sponge. It might work:) Thanks again.

Hello everyone. My dwarf Meyer in a large terracotta pot has/had a severe infestation of scale I caught later in the game rather than earlier. I thoroughly cleaned off the scale by hand and a toothbrush. The branches appear alive but ALL of the leaves appear withered and dried. I fear it went on too long unnoticed. I watered with a liquid fertilizer to encourage new growth. Should I remove all of the dead leaves? Would this encourage new leaves? I did not use a soapy solution nor did I use neem oil. It's been roughly one week. I do not see a reinfestation. I hope I didn't lose the tree and it can recover. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

All the above would be true IF it is regular (oil or latex) paint. Aren't there companies that will apply epoxy to your old tub an tile to make them look like new? The pics of their work show the tile and grout all the same color as in your pics. It does scratch off, so I think you need to first figure out what is on the tile before you remove it. I have no clue but to razor blade some off and see what dissolves it before you start spraying or whatever. Good luck on that one. -Babka

Sanding/Pressure washing will be the quickest, but it sounds like the wood has started to rot if it's that soft. Understanding you don't want the dust to get into the soil and the groundwater.... You could try a heat gun and a scraper used a lot in the wooden boat building industry. Will require some more labor on your part, but once you figure it out the paint will come up in long strips and can then be collected and disposed of properly.

I used fine sandpaper on cane and it worked. Just go lightly and slowly. I then stained it and it turned out great.

Use a fine sanding block. Little damage and the spongy block gets into crevices easier than regular sandpaper.

I have had great success removing paint from glass, tile and wood with a product called Goof Off. Lowes and HD both carry it. Try it in a small inconspicuous spot first to see if it takes off the finish. I've never had it take off wood stain, but I've never tried it on cane.

Well I am doing the same type of project. I have a bench that I bought from an antique store. There is cain on the back and the sides. Someone spray painted it black! I did get a paint remover in a can at Home Depot. It is a spray on in a gold can. It says it only takes 15 min. This stuff is great! Sorry I don't remember the name but it is in the paint section. I have gotten most of the paint off. I also used a soft wire brush after I wiped off the paint with a rag.The problem I am having is in the crevaces, but I think it will be ok. I hope that it will cause the cane to look even more antiquish (word?). I'm spray painting the wood part of the bench a shiny black. I have a cushion I reupholstered (my first try) that is gold and black. Anyway, good luck with the project.
