For those of you thinking about an Ikea kitchen...
Comments (3)I spent hours and hours on coming up with a design and then enlisted the Ikea design services (provided by a subcontractor) for $200. The services included measuring, putting the design into the Ikea design software and in the meantime, adding suggestions they thought might be helpful. I am very satisfied with how things are going. I'm sure if I had paid more, I wouldn't have ended up with some of the problems such as routing of the range hood exhaust and fridge door space just barely allowing that doors be open fully. Also, there will be one open shelf on each side of the cooktop (beneath the upper cabinets). Wish I would have thought about exactly what the open shelf was going to be made up, provided by. Bottom line, I am extremely happy with what I've got but had there been another option for an Ikea design service that had a higher price (i.e. assuming better) and was local, I would have used the more expensive service. There were so many traumatic moments along the way that could had been avoided had I had a little bit more guidance. I checked Angie's list and searching on Ikea produced only a couple of results and turned out those results didn't do kitchens, only ofices and living room cabinets, etc....See MorePlease check my tiny kitchen layout. ;)
Comments (33)I want to thank everyone for their help and for encouraging me to get rid of the old pantry wall. That has made for much better layout of the space. I think I need to change the title now though, it's not so tiny and cramped now. LOL We've been busy and the offending wall is now gone. =) The bedroom door has been moved to the living room wall. We have been able to move the woodstove over against the right wall using some elbows in the stove pipe. What do you think of the following layout? (the 10ft. wall is not built, all other walls and doors are as shown) I like the booth type seating, which will probably be 2 benches and a table. I have moved the freezer to where I had the fridge since it was in the pantry. Then moved the fridge next to it. (It would be recessed into the wall behind so would not stick out quite as much as shown.) Pantry storage will be replaced by the cabinets next to the fridge. Microwave would sit in that area too. It gives us more wall space in the living room. I know it sounds weird, but we are mountain bikers and need some wall space for bicycle storage. =) Yes, they live in the house. LOL Let me know what you think!...See MoreWill you please check this kitchen plan for me.
Comments (21)Sophie..so glad you chimed in here :-) i agree. I think a sink, even a small one at the bar/beverage area would be good. Do you think 3 sinks is too much? While the place is gutted, I think it's smart. Yes, after looking at those beverage center cabinets..they would look better if in line with the ones to the left. Or the one to the left needs to be a solid door?? And stemware holders and maybe even a wine rack?? I will show this to the kids (30s, not kids). Posting island schematic. Kids planning trash in island and (I think) to right of window sink. Two trash pull outs. Overkill? They recycle big time compared to us. Hmmm. i have no idea how they are planning to support the stone. But, I will find out. I will also make sure that they have done their homework on the design of the island. I hadn't even considered this. i agree that there is a mismatch between the quality of the cabinets and the appliances they have selected. I think they could have gotten a similar price from one of our local custom cabinet makers. We are 3 hrs south. But they went with this place because they can get the cabinets in a few weeks. The house is an up and coming city neighborhood. They bought it right. They are planning resale in 5 years. According to them, buyers don't even look at cabinet quality but they do pay attention to appliances thus the SZ frig and Wolf range. Sad commentary. They are watching every dime and want to turn a profit but I wish I felt more confident about the cabinet specs. I printed out your post and I'm going to talk to them about your last paragraph and the specs you listed. Perhaps these cabinets can be upgraded. I know there is only two whites. Thank you!!!...See MoreDo not buy an Ikea kitchen right now...
Comments (102)I initially started my kitchen reno March 2020. Had absolutely nothing ordered and my husband told me to run to IKEA and order everything that night because covid lockdown was going to take place in 24 hrs. Ran to home depot, rented a truck, drove 25 miles to the store and bought the entire kitchen. We were the last order pick up before lockdown happened. After that, everything went out of stock and nothing could be found. Recently found myself breaking my corner cab to pieces to access a water pipe issue and cried like a baby because the corner cab was out of stock with no eta. Tried in vain not to have to tear out the original cab and cussed my contractor out in my mind bc he glued and brad nailed the laminate counter down and we couldn't get it off without breaking the cabinet. I luckily got the very last corner cab in stock at the store when I went for replacement countertops. I cried with happiness like a baby and the IKEA rep looked at me like I was crazy. Little do they seem to know how hard it is to get anything in and they have no idea when they'll get inventory. IKEA is beyond a mess right now. It will take a lot for them to get back to a decent normal with everything going on in Europe and stock issues in general....See Morebrody_miasmom
