Love the room! I admire your courage in going dark (I love the look, but am into a 'neutral walls' phase right now. Might be laziness, really.) BTW: re: RH pic of the books with the covers ripped off. Do you suppose they do that because of liability issues? I mean, couldn't the publishers of books featured in ads go after the advertiser for using their books without permission? So, it's easier for ad directors to simply remove the covers rather than have to get permission from all those publishers to use the image?

Love your room. I didn't see the ages of your kids either, but here is another idea if you could fit it in in a corner. My son made a 'stage', which was basically a painted plywood platform about 6" tall. It turned into a fort, a castle, and several other things between the boys and girls. He made some side panels and my DIL made a curtain out of some inexpensive fabric. The kids loved it. They velcro'd some different things on the front that made it either a stage or a fort depending on which kids (boys or girls) were using it. It got a lot of use before they outgrew it and dismantled it and that playroom turned into the oldest son's BR. The beanbags would be great to toss around for reading. PB Kids or Teen has good ones that last and are large in a variety of cover choices, or you can get smaller ones at Target or some other places but may be limited on colors. I think a bright red or chocolate color would look good with your turquoise for the bean bags.

Whoa, that's some room! Thanks for posting the additional photo, jqchen... completely changes my initial impression of the room. You say you want to have the whole house painted before moving in, which is practical, but from a decorating point of view, it makes life harder for you. You say you don't have furniture for this room yet. If you choose a color first, you will then have to choose everything else -- rugs, upholstery, furniture, drapes -- based on that color. That approach limits your options so much! "I fell in love with these chairs / this rug / this whatever / but it doesn't go with the wall color..." Is it possible to postpone choosing the wall color for awhile? It's so much more fun shopping for furniture and rugs when you're not constricted by wall color. The painters will always tell you to paint the walls before bringing in furniture -- because it makes life easier FOR THEM. Not for YOU. I gotta ask, what's going on with that ceiling? Is it a chambered ceiling? A tray? Are there other windows? LOOOOOVE THE ROOM, by the way. Are you keeping the wall-to-wall carpeting?

I’m not sure about trends per se, but I’ve always painted north facing rooms, darker by default, in deeper shades. You can paint a north facing room bright white and it will look dingy because it’s a north facing room. Just give in to the darkness on that side of your house, and celebrate light in your south facing rooms. In your case that would mean a darker foyer, and lighter LR and DR. Gold is a good color to avoid, almost always. What other colors are in your rug? Become photo handy. Then google your granite and look at images of kitchens that designers have painted, that have your granite. You will learn a lot about the possibilities. What I’ve learned is that green granite and white (or off-white) cabinets means you have two colors in your kitchen. One of them will be your wall color. Almost every image with that pairing has white or green walls. You picked a beautiful, powerful granite. It runs the show.
