Chill out - it's under warranty - they'll repair it for you. Why do you expect a brand new fridge?

p.s. - try to get someone other than A&E to do the repair!

I'd be afraid of a lemon too. Does not instill a bit of confidence to have it break so soon. Wonder how that can happen. For all that dough they want for them, to the tune of $3000, I hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction. I'd be upset if it broke in three years.

snookums2 -you hit the nail on the head. I am worried about a lemon & not thrilled about having my brand new fridge taken apart. Kitchen Aid was also rude & dismissive.

weissman - I am trying to "chill out" (lol) but it is not cool to have a 3 week old fridge that needs a part. I would ideally like a replacement, but not sure that will happen.

If anyone unfortunately has experience with this type of situation I would love some advice.

generally an item won't be declared a lemon until at least 3 problems (the rules vary and manufacturers only do it grudgingly) - did you talk to your dealer by the way - sometimes a defective item can be returned to the dealer within the first month.

I, too, have the KFIS29PBMS. Good luck is all I can say. We've had three of them in our house in less than a year. The first one stopped making ice after a few months, and then we noticed global warming occurring in the fridge/freezer. The repairman determined it was a leak in the sealed system, and round and round we went until KA agreed to replace it. When the replacement was wheeled in, the french doors hung on it like crooked teeth. After the delivery folks tried their best to adjust them but could not do so, DH and I said take it away. The third fridge came, doors were still crooked but not as badly, and after some adjustment, we were worn down enough to accept a "pretty good" job. Just like with the first one, the right side door works well at first, but quickly loosens up to swing with wild abandon when opened.

Disclaimer: I have bad refrigerator karma. We owned a Samsung french door before this, and within two years, the ice maker broke and we had a sealed system leak in that one too. I swore I'd never buy Samsung again after the battles I had with their customer service department in order to get warranty service; Samsung did eventually refund the purchase price...and we bought the KA. When the KA stopped making ice, I immediately thought "oh no, we better not have another sealed system leak. nah--what are the odds?" Indeed.

Thanks..Yes I ordered from Karl's & I called them right away. I am waiting for them to hear back from Kitchen Aid. They said because the part can be replaced they will not do a return. I also was cooking on my stove tonight and the over the range microwave fan automatically went on (loudly) and scared the you know what out of me. I am very upset with my kitchen aid appliances :(

Oh that sort of thing scares me, lol. All these electronics and automated machines. I recall coming across a fan that did automatically come on if it senses cooking. Could that be the case? It is a feature?

KitchenAid is now part of Whirlpool. Repair is what is in their warranty, NOT replacement. The only hope you have of replacement is if you have a local lemon law, and you have at least 3 repairs for the exact same complaint.

Repair not replacement is what most/all manufacturers do. However, the retailer has a 30 replacement policy for defective merchandise that could apply except that it's weasel worded to give them an out:

Delivered Appliances and Televisions may be returned for defective exchange ONLY and must be checked by an authorized service agent before an exchange can be approved. All exchanges are at the sole discretion of Karl's.

Well, KA will replace (or refund) if the appliance cannot be repaired--but it sounds like a fan motor is something that can be repaired, albeit with a replacement part. OP, I guess my real reason for posting is that having had three of these refrigerators come through my door within 6 months or so, coupled with the fact that this refrigerator is a new model for KA, makes my DH and I wonder if all the bugs weren't quite worked out before it went out on the market.
As far as your OTR microwave fan coming on while you were cooking, I know that is a feature some regular range hoods have. Because I knew I wanted to "control" my vent hood, I rejected hoods with those automatic sensors.

I don't know about "weasel worded" but I can see it from their side. After working in manufacturing for 10 years and then running my own business, some customers will return a product for no particular legitimate reason but say that the product was defective to try to justify a return. I can see where the appliance store would want to verify that the appliance was defective before agreeing to take it back. If they take it back and it turns out that there is nothing really wrong with it, they cannot sell it as new and they lose money on it.

gpraceman - I basically agree with you. The reason I called it "weasel worded" was the phrase: "All exchanges are at the sole discretion of Karl's." This gives them an out any time they feel like it. Other retailers allow 30 days defective returns, no questions asked and some retailers allow 30 day returns for any reason although the merchandise must be in brand new condition. Some retailers have curtailed these policies because, for example, people would buy new TVs just before the Super Bowl and then immediately return them under a very liberal return policy.

There is actually a FEDERAL lemon law, which also covers household appliances.

It's good that the dealer is working with you. Hard to know what to suggest - my 11 year old KA fridge is still working great but it seems like all brands have problems with newer models these days - trying to keep their costs down. I have a friend with a Samsung fridge and she's had problem after problem right after the warranty ran out. Ice makers definitely are error prone so if you're happy without one, I'd suggest researching established models to see if there are some with better reliability. Unfortunately, these days all appliance purchases seem to be a bit of a crapshoot.

Take a look at the Electrolux. People on here have been happy with them, including me. I've had the FD CD for 18 months. The drawers and drawer glides are quality. They had a problem with the ice maker when it first came out several years ago, but that problem has been resolved.
