How much did you spend on the furniture?
IMO, under $1,000; I wouldn't worry about it but if it's more then that, I'd want a wood finish and it's exactly what I ended up doing.

I took her out to get ideas on what style she liked, then I made the choice.

If you keep the black, I wouldn't go with anything too dark on the walls or bedding. A nice light sage, blue, even a light pink would be nice. Check out Walmart for bedding as they have the comforters the kids are into that are "furry" or sueded.

For my 15 year old, we did the brown fuzzy comforter, then accented in tans & blue, looks great, everyone loves her room. I found accessories at Marshall's. I also got sueded curtains from penney's in brown, then a blue tabbed top sheer, with beads up against the window. I found an awesome glass desk at Office Max, I actually almost didn't get it but so far, it's been very easy to keep clean.

My daughter's last room (last house) was done with an eye to the Paris Apartment look, accented with piles of laundry, school books, magazines and empty glasses and dishes, of course.

We used black furniture, B&W bedding, a crystal lamp from Home Goods, a little funky crystal chandy I picked up for $20, and framed B&W photos of Paris by Robert Doisneau. The walls and ceiling were EK Alexandra Blue. We had to work with the light blue carpet she'd chosen at age 8, so we went sort of monochromatic plus black and white.

The chest was a vintage hand-me-down and the chair a curb-side find I had reupholstered. I think the most I spent was on the iron bed and professional framing.

I think the black furniture can be very versatile.

1. Is this too much black, and should we change the selection?

No. You told her to pick out what she wants. If you change your mind now and say she has to have furniture that you choose she may be come resentful. Black furniture is very popular.

2. If not, what do we do with the walls and comforter?

I would let her choose. It sounds like she already has something in mind, a vision, for the room.

3. The floor is dark hardwood, should we get a rug?

Take a look at Delia's, the teen catalogue. They have some cute bedding and accessories, and aren't OTT. I think the black is fine--maybe she'll still like it when she's 20 and moving out.

This one is an Idea that YOU can do with Her alone, You do not have to go to Pottery Barn Kids to create this. It would be so easy to do.

all you would need is wire and metal shower curtain clips or even use embroidery thread of dif colors to tie in some Gauzy Material - or even paper clips for that matter that are coated with gummy cover. Anything that will slide on a wire.

I just wanted to add that there are some really need bookcases and such at IKEA that would work well with what you already have.

We changed my daughter's bedroom about a year ago (she was 14 at the time) and she now has all black furniture and electric green (neon like a tennis ball!) walls and her bedding and window treatments are black and white zebra print with a pink animal print as a contrast. The room really pops and she loves it! We left her bookshelves white. I'm attaching a link to her window treatment - you can see the black vanity to the right and the bright green walls! YIKES - it'll be repainted when she grows up and moves out!

I love the first pic that Lindy posted. I would never have thought about the aqua/black combo but it's funny because just this morning I complimented a friend on her aqua shirt and black sweater combo. Anyway, my DD has a black bed, black desk, and cherry-stained bureau and bookcase. Her walls are pink (she is 7) and I found a pink and b&w quilt set for her bed. Depending on what else is going on in your DD's room, you might also look at the wall decals that are so popular now. My DD has a large black chandelier decal hanging over her headboard. I found it -- and many others -- at etsy.com (you can go to the site and just search for wall decals). You can order most of them in any color. Could be another fun way to add another black accent to the room. If I were you, I'd choose the comforter/bedding first, and then find a wall color to coordinate with that. It's easier that way. And yes, I'd add a rug too. I wanted a black and white rug because the pink was hard to match, and I ended up using Flor tiles in "Amazing Lace."

I think a shade of Rose or Plum would be beautiful. It would be a feminine yet sophisticated look.

If your daughter likes yellow, a pale-ish yellow (not bumble bee yellow) would really help brighten the room and would look great on the walls with black furniture.

I just saw a "bedroom" in a furniture store with black furniture, white coverlet, chambray blue ticking sheets, and lampshades, etc. were the chambray blue. Sounds bizarre, but it was very soothing and lovely. Kindof Ralph Lauren looking, although that might be too "mature" for your young daughter.

I'm loving the pink and black that lindybarts posted. Very cute and feminine, and doesn't read "gothic" or "depressed kid" at all. :o)

How fun for your daughter to get a new room, and sweet of you to be allowing her to choose, but steering her towards choices that will make a lovely room for her in the end. Have fun. :o)

I think black is very sharp-looking and not goth at all. My daughter just turned 15 and she's got all white furniture too. The bedding she picked out for her room redesign is black and purple (with just a little bit of white) and I'm actually wondering how her white furniture is going to look with it.

Last year we redid both of our daughter's bedrooms as their birthday present. They are 20 & 11. Both have black furniture, some we bought and some we painted. Your daughter will have to dust more than she did with her white furniture as black shows every dust paricle! You can see our daughter's bedroom makeovers on RMS.

I am not sure if Miley's room is wallpaper or not, but we will probably paint the cirlces in either silver on blue or a gloss on an eggshell paint. Not sure if I will stencil or stamp, haven't thought that part through yet. Anyway, I found a room on Rate My Space that used Miley's room as inspiration and they freehand painted the circles:

Holy Cow, that Rate my Space room turned out beautiful. Almost better than Miley's. Thanks for that link. I did find tons of links about her bedroom as it looks to be quite the popular room right now for tweens. There is a company in the UK that sells the circle decals but I'm not sure about ordering from the UK. Painting them like they did in the RMS room is a good idea too but they did theirs freeform...don't know if I have that steady of a hand. I'll have to fly my Dad out who's a painter. LOL!

klb, you'll have to share how yours turns out. We are still in the furniture ordering stage so ours will be a few months. I'd love to compare notes! Thanks for posting that link in the first place. DD is in love with that room.

Annaroo doesn't seem to be around, but if any of you are doing teen bedrooms, there are two threads in our gallery chock full of pretty inspirational pictures for you.
