Do not pay until the job is completed to your satisfaction. If they have your money you may never see them again. It has happened to me, I don't want it to happen to you. The contractor we have now is so wonderful, we don't pay a dime until the job is complete...no deposit..nothing. Just tell him the reasons you listed above. It is perfectly reasonable...listen to your gut.

Of course I'll be the odd-man out. I'm a bit confused about what it is that's been done and what it is that you're being asked to pay for.
Based on what I read it sounds as though the "fabrication" has been completed and that you're waiting on the "installation". Did I misunderstand?
Secondly, I have never heard of the customer paying seperate charges for fabrication & installation but paying for one lump sum for the entire project. Can you explain a little further for me?
But to your question, yes, you should be paying for at least the product & fabrication up front, then the remaining installation after the project is completed to your satisfaction. With many retailers the customer is expected to pay 100% of the project cost up front.

My granite was one price for the stone, fabrication, and installation - 50% up front and 50% AFTER I was satisfied with the install. If the installation is this Friday, wait until they're done to pay them.

I've already paid $7,000 (two installments of four installments) for the project which is $9,800 overall. I paid for the granite slabs separately, directly to the retailer as required by my contractor.

He was due to install the granite today but has since pushed it back to Friday but says when he brings the granite today he wants me to pay for the fabrication that was carried out i.e. one sink cutout, there's no other fabrication.

So my concern is that I'm paying for this fabrication which he measured without seeing it in place -- I would prefer a lump sum after the granite is installed (which is the next payment milestone). I don't know whether he's done a good job or not. (And I would like the additional incentive to be sure he doesn't no-show again. He's already 30min late...)

I agree with you. I would tell him just what you told us. I want to be sure the fabrication was done correctly before I pay for it, and I won't know that until it is in place. I will pay for it when it is in place and I know that it is correct and doesn't need to be redone. Maybe I am just suspicious, but "dropping off" the counter, postponing installation and asking for payment before seeing if it it fits and all the cutouts are in the right places, etc. makes me wonder if they think you won't pay them once you realize it wasn't done exactly right and the sink doesn't fit or isn't in the right place, or if his finances are so tight he needs the money to pay the fabricator, both of which are not good signs, in my opinion.

Mine was 50% up front, 50% upon completion (and satisfaction of job done). I'm not sure I've got this right but my granite people had the specs for the sink AND they insisted on seeing the sink in person to re-measure but the cutting of course was done away from the home. It was a perfect fit for the sink and all was good but no one asked me to pay BEFORE I saw the sink installed perfectly and you should not have to either.
