What's amazing is all the other video links to the right of more moose and sprinklers! What is it with the sprinklers?

I have always loved moose!

Does anyone know-what would they do if you walked into the yard while they were playing? Run away like deer would? Attack? Hold their ground? Are they dangerous?

I'm going to leave my sprinkler on all day and see if a moose comes!!!

VERRRRYYYY Awesome pictures Igloo! You are one lucky girl! That last shot is simply charming!

A mother moose with babies like that would likely have them scatter, in the hope they'd all run in the same direction, as soon as you open the door and step out. If the babies go in opposite directions, she'll hang out on the sidelines, and if you get between her by walking out into your yard, and her other baby, she'll attack. Mother mooses are VERY easily provoked (I can understand after having one child let alone two to take care of). So while they're cute...we all have to watch out for them so we don't end up accidently dead. In a yard like that, with kids, they probably go out and check the yard before the kids go out. Our two year old looks out for moose :) you teach all the kids that here.

We all have our "dangers" to teach our kids...watch out for traffic, strangers, and now...bobcats in Maryland!

Seriously, I love rural areas and they are well worth the different precautions you learn when living in those areas!

Oh Igloo, Jesse is adorable. We had a deer walk up to the back of our house the other day. I sent our medium sized dog out to scare him back into the woods...he was eating my flowers! What would I do with a moose?

Yah If it aint a moosebutt, its not in Igloos yard.
Buehl, we now have coyotes in my neighborhood, which you may remember I am in a suburban area-about 8-10 miles from the PFCHANGs we were in that night! Not the hinterlands like you!

Wow, and we thought we had neato wildlife around here when we were showing our friends pictures of the roadrunner in our yard! Little did we know...

There are occasional mountain lion sightings around here. They are not so common that we fear them every time we step out of our house, but common enough that they teach the elementary school kids what to do if they see one. Of course when I heard about that I immediately started asking our friends' 5 year olds what to do so that I don't get eaten! I'm not prepared for all these crazy californian predators- the scariest thing we had back in NY were raccoons.

Here is part of our Wa State backyard...actually, on our property, but outside our fenced portion (the back 40, as it were) Composting didn't work out so well as you might imagine, she's about 30' from my bin ....

what you can't see are the two cubs in the trees beyond! Sorry for the clarity of the picture, it was about 5:30 a.m. and barely getting light!

We also have coyotes, a bobcat, raccoons...and we are but blocks from a shopping area!

On my hill I've had occasional sightings of big white egrets, roadrunners (they really do look like the cartoon -- you half expect to see Wile E Coyote with a stick of Acme dynamite chasing them), Cal. quail, coyotes, bobcats, woodpeckers, vultures (creepy sight one AM), raccoons, skunks, king snakes, and of course those $#@! rabbits. Cats are either indoor only, or gone within a week.

Kids must know how to recognize a black widow spider without getting close enough to spot the red hourglass. I tell them that it looks like a black skateboard helmet -- true black, shiny, and raised. The kids most likely to meet a BWS know skateboard helmets :)

I still remember when I was five and reached into my dresser for a pink tee shirt...there was a black widow laying on it...that picture is still clear in my head fourty years later! We get bear outside the door every three or four years or so in the raspberrys (bad summers that drive them into the more developed areas) both black and brown. We have to be careful then.

But our biggest threat is the moose. The bulls fight outside our door, literally. I miss being able to go out and take pics (they can't walk up stairs because their racks are too big).

We're going to Kaktovik this winter to visit our partners (company thing). There you have to watch for polar bears..in the back yard, front yard, and the porch. They also come in homes. I prefer them to snakes...and spiders :oP

Well, the flock of wild turkeys and their babies on the Tennessee property we're building on are looking pretty tame compared to the rest of y'all! We've seen deer and raccoon tracks so there's more wildlife there . . . but no bear, no moose . . . we hope!

My wildlife--I get the most on my way to and from work actually. We have opossums, coyotes, turkey vultures, deer, squirrels, foxes, etc. However some of the strangest things I see (you have to understand I was born and bred in LA) is other "wildlife" on the roads--not the drivers but there are plenty of them. I have had sheep on the roads, cows, horses, geese, etc., when I drive to and from work. Usually on Mondays, the cows are loose. I call it a Bovine Alert! They must have gotten out of an open fence.

I remember driving on the freeway when I first moved here and looking to my right to see a goat in the backseat of the car next to me, going down the road at 70 mph. It looked at me and I at him. The ladies in the front seat driving were chatting back and forth like this was one of the most "normal" things on earth! I couldn't believe this goat staring at me! Plus, all the windows were up in the car! Goats don't smell too good. Yikes!

Then about six months ago or so, I look at the car in front of me and there is a sheep in the back, staring at me! Beautiful sheep. Must have been on the way to a show or something, but a sheep none-the-less. Ah, yes, it is never dull around here.

While we are OT--Human wildlife on the road. I have seen make-up being put on, shaving, etc. However, a new one the other day. A guy was brushing his teeth while driving. Does he spit or swallow? If he spits, does it get all over his car? Does he rinse with a Starbucks? He had to be going about 60 or so MPH. Unbelieveable (shaking head back and forth). I can't figure it out!

we have deer and they leave an awful mess when they ...uh... you know ...poop. i don't really want to think about how you would go about cleaning up after a MOOSE.

do they bite?

They kick, hard :) It's called being "gored" (head butting and kicking) and typically it's called being "gored to death" Really, they're very dangerous animals, but every year someone still feeds them like deer until they get grumpy and kick them...and the one in the window up there, that's a baby...they're HUGE! When mama moose walks past the window the bottom of her belly is at the top of the window, about 7' up. We have to be very still, because they're stupid, and will break through windows if they're startled, or if you're dumb enough to leave a plant there. I added flower beds last year to keep them from brushing right against the window as they had been doing.

But their umm leftover mess...it's actually dry like rabbit pellets. People string it on thread and sell it to the tourists (moose poop jewelry) and no, I'm not kidding. It has very little smell when fresh, and none after it's dried. Mind you, I'm not wearing any..but it cracks me up to see tourists in the stuff :oP

I had deer in Washington. Moose eat less of your flowers, (they like trees and shrubs but not so much roses and petunias) and they are much nicer poopers :) Now bear...they're another story!!!

I've had the sprinklers on all day. The yard is a swamp. But no moose came. Maybe it's because I live on an island? In California? I'm so depressed...

let me see if i understand: people there collect moose crap, string it to make necklaces and sell to tourists. tourist PAYS for moose crap on string (with MONEY) and proceed to wear around neck. is this correct?
very interesting. i suppose there's very little available in the souvenir market. sounds like a niche to me.

Drunken Swedish moose is shot after biting three-year-old

Too many fermented apples was believed to have been the reason a young moose bit a three-year-old girl who was playing outside her home in Kungalv, western Sweden, reports said Wednesday.

Yes, they sell moose poop on all sorts of items.. they call them moose nuggets. They also have stuff like moose nugget lip balm which has labeling that says something like, not very effective at curing chapped lips, but guaranteed to stop you from licking them.

Now I miss Alaska! Granted I never lived there, but we actually went 3 years in a row. Love the place. We did see a Mama and her twins on the way back from Chitnia (sp), when we were staying at Copper River. Yes I did see the Moose Poop, jewlery, didn't buy any! DD was just saying the other day she wanted to go back, maybe next year!

DH loves Alaska. I've not been. One time, he called me from the air on the way back to California from an Alaska fishing trip. Said I had to get a deep freeze delivered the same day because he was bringing back a lot of salmon and halibut. Have you ever tried to get a huge freezer purchased and delivered the same day? Boy, did that limit my research and choices.

We were this close to continuing north from Vancouver when we were on our odyssey road trip in 99. We were so tempted and then we realized that we would never make it back by the time high school football practice began. We were on the road for almost 4 weeks as it was. One day we will make it up there!
I was almost brought up in Alaska, when I was a baby my parents had the choice of teaching school on a reservation in Alaska or AZ- they decided they had enough snow back east- so i became a desert rat! And I have seen the roadrunners, coyote ( where they belong) bobcatt, big tarantulas in the road staying warm at night!
But no moose! we hoped to see a moose on our road trip- saw grizzlies and brown bears, mountain goats, elk walking down the main street in Banff, buffalo, whales( in Cal) but no moose!
