I like the first one, just as an initial reaction. I like the red in it.

Another vote for the first option. The second option is nice, but I don't know if the colors are quite as nice with your room, and I would be nervous if there aren't any reviews to check.

I like the first one, but have you considered putting your rug the other way?

I know this is silly, but have you tried turning the rug the other way? Seems like it would be fine and would anchor the entire seating area (sectional and chair) if you did, but then looks can be deceiving.

However, if that won't work, or you really want a new rug, go for it! I think that the first rug is nice, but I am thinking that it may just kind of disappear into the floor. I would like to see something with a little deeper background color since everything else in the room, other than the case goods, feels fairly light in color, including the floor.

I agree with everyone that it is a lovely, cozy space - I remember it from your postings about arranging the room some time back.

I find number 1 and 3 too light agnaist the wall color and other lighter accents in the room so my vote is number 2. However I think number 2 is still just a smidge too light.

Actually I love the color of the rug you are replacing...you are right - its too bad it isn't just a bit bigger!

How do you know the brand is Safavieh? It doesn't state it on Overstock, unless I missed it. I have been scouring O also.

My favorite is #3, but for your room, I think #2 would look better.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Interesting others here like my cheapo MacFrugals "temporary" rug which has been there 2-years now.... So do I. If I could only get it in a larger size. Initially, I ran the rug the other direction and feedback was it made the room feel squashed and I should rotate it. Plus I am still thinking of adding another small arm chair to the right side of the room to round out the grouping--which I cannot do with the smaller rug.

So far, it is 7 votes for rug #1 and 2 votes for rug #2.

I have been leaning towards the first two rugs. Love the third but am concerned it may be a tad formal for my space. From descriptions the second rug has a sage background which I like as I feel it will be be more forgiving with dirt. How I know the 1st and 3rd are Savafiehs is that I read that in the feedback and then I went on the Savafieh website and found them there under discontinued rugs--the pics are actually from their website.

Has anyone ordered from RugsUSA? I've seen a few darker rugs on their website, but no feedback. I guess I could just order a 2x3 rug to check the colors, but I'd really prefer the larger rug in time for Christmas, plus they have a 20% off sale now so I'd be very temped to just bit the bullet and hope for the best.

I really like #1, but wonder about its described "ivory" background in your heavily used room. Any sense as to whether it is actually lighter than it appears in the pic?

I do like some of these rugs better than rug 1; however rug 1 is only $299 and some of these cost more than double that for comparable quality rug (hand tufted wool by Safavieh). Does the style difference of any of these rugs merit spending the extra money?

delta: That is my hesitation with rug 1; however the price can't be beat at $299 and I can always get it cleaned. I go back and forth on this--darker rug=won't show the dirt but perhaps will suck up too much light. Also this room is open to kitchen so there is lots of wood (mostly cherry) so a lighter rug would brighten it up.

I think I like rug 8 best, but with 20% discount from RugsUSA it would cost me just under $1,000. Please don't let that sway anyone's vote though as I'm still undecided.

That is a pretty wide price spread. Does anyone know if the quality of Safavieh rugs varies much?

The Safavieh website has a section where you can look up the closest dealer so you can see if there are any near you.

I think that first rug from Overstock is a bargain. It is gorgeous and would imho look wonderful in your space. I don't think with all of those colors in it, dirt will be a problem. How are the reviews on Overstock? If it has 4 or 5 stars and people like the quality I'd go for it. If it does not, then, I would keep looking. Rugs are big decisions and purchasing them over the internet has a certain amount of risk involved, but it seems that many people love their rugs from O.

My first thought was, if it's an anchor you're looking for, the rugs you've shown are too light. Then I saw the suggestions about turning the existing rug and I thought that was a good idea, but it looks like it might be too wide when turned. I'd honestly like to see something more along the lines of what you have. I really like that dark trim.

However, since we are doing some holiday entertaining, I've been addressing some of the items that I have been putting off--the family rug being one of them. Glad to hear you like #1. I'm leaning towards ordering that one as it's such a very good deal at $299. Plus there is lots of positive feedback on it from other buyers. It I get tired of it, I could probably resell on CL and recoup most of my investment--as I will with the rug I have there now. One concern I do have with the hand tufted rugs is that several buyers gave feedback that the rugs shed like crazy. What has been your experience? Is that just to be expected with a lessor (meaning tufted vs. handknotted) quality rug?

I bought a Savavieh rug from O several years ago, it was a steal for the quality. If you can find what you want on O you can get an amazing deal. I was nervous ordering it but very pleased when I saw the quality.

It's usually just a problem with the hand-tufted rugs. Hand-knots seldom shed.

shappy: Glad to hear you were happy with your rug. I am nervous too, but for the money I want to spend I'd probably spend up with an olefin rug if I were to purchase locally instead of the internet.

parma: That is what I wondered. Does the shedding ever stop or is it just for the first couple of weeks?

I did find a couple of old pics of the rug running the other way. Shows how far this room has come! It didn't look right running that way either and it looks like I was not able to get both legs of the arm chair on the rug. The arm chair/recliner is actually the problem as it keeps shifting back to the wall and then when it reclines it ends of scratching off the paint. Luckily there are little plastic bumpers on the edges of the chair or that'd be worn off as well.

I just had another idea to put my existing family rug in my breakfast nook since I don't have a rug there currently. Since it's an open floorplan this rug would provide a nice balance to the lighter rug #1 I'd get for the family room. I've never put a rug under the dining set where we eat all our family meals because I figure it'd just get dirty. Since I feel I've already more than gotten my money's worth (all of $60) from this rug, it'd be no big deal if that happens. No to mention this rug does not show any dirt as far as I can tell.

Val, thanks for posting those older pix. You are correct, seeing those shows that the rug doesn't work going the other direction.

One more thought, tho. Could you rotate the sectional so that the one half is on the wall where the chair is now, the other on the window wall - essentially, in the opposite corner to where it currently sits? The reason I ask is that then you could put a pair of chairs on that wall with the high windows, a nice table and lamp between them.

Have you looked on Smartbargains? The consensus (and I agree) is that a darker rug would look best.

Well I've been stewing on all of your comments as well as looking at various websites. I just keep coming back to O because the prices there are amazing for a Safavieh rug which fits our budget best for this room.

I've did find one more rug, a Bakhteiri. There are over 100 reviews on this rug with 4.7 rating. I like that it's still traditional, though less formal. It's very busy so won't show the dirt. Perhaps too busy though with my red chair?

So it's between that and rug #1.

I'm still debating on either a 7'6 x 9'6 or 8'3 x 11. The larger size would cover most of my hardwood (room is approx. 14x16), the smaller size should still be large enough to go under the furniture.
