Comments (69)Our new walk-in pantry. Just over 6' x 8' in size, with 9' ceilings. Shelves are a mix of 24" deep, 12" deep and 9" deep. We have two slide out drawers under the bottom left shelf in which we put kid snacks for their easy reach. We store ALL food and small appliances in here - the only foodstuff we keep in the main kitchen are spices near the stove. Our contractor cut and painted the wood himself, and then hung all the brackets. Shelving has been braced together in the corners to keep them from separating. We love it! It's a vast improvement over the small over-stuffed closet we had before our kitchen remodel!...See MoreWhat do you think of my kitchen plans (With Renderings and Floor
Comments (10)I agree the aisles are too tight. 36" between island and fridge is pretty squeezy. Also, you said you plan to put "Mixers etc above the refrigerator." Not sure how tall your ceilings are but cabinet depth refrigerators are usually taller than standard depth, so you're not likely to have much storage space there. PLUS, mixers etc. can be heavy (unless you're talking about a hand mixer, not a stand mixer?) and trying to reach them from over the refrigerator seems dangerous. In a kitchen that size, I would ditch the refrigerator drawers and prep sink and add storage instead (then you could put your mixers etc where they are easier to reach). I would put the range/hood on the window wall where you have the uppers now and the sink on the island. Then you could do a continuous counter instead of a raised bar, which would give you better work space and limit the junk collector nature of the raised bar. Having had three raised bars now, I HATE them. Where counters stay reasonably clutter free, clutter never fails to find a permanent home on a raised bar. I don't know why. It just is. By moving the sink to the island, you will have room for dish drawers in the island, so you won't need the upper cabs. Few microwaves are less than 15" deep. You could build out that wall a bit to give you room for standard depth pantry cabinets with pullouts, or a corner pantry closet like natal's. Take a look at her pantry in the thread linked below. We have a very similar set up, except that our "corner" pantry is 42" wide, not 53, and it works great. Comments (37)I'm calling it a tie. ;-) You have the pantry labeled at 4 ft wide (although it seems to be drawn longer?), so with the oven a tiny bit over half of it, you have less than 24" left for a doorway, so I wouldn't take any of it up with a door frame and door, but leave it as large as possible. Truthfully, I think it needs to be longer so you can get yourself a little larger opening. If it was more like 5 ft, you could do a pocket door, like Bmore suggested and I drew in the plan above. I would want to flush out the cabinets and fridge with the pantry...but the island would need to be adjusted for adequate aisle width. If you bring the front of the fridge (not counting doors) out even with the front edge of the pantry, you don't need to have a cabinet in between...Or you could put the microwave in between, so you don't have 2 smallish cabinets? Do you have a need for the 15" tall cab? Do you have your microwave or have it chosen? Will it fit with the required clearance in a 24" cabinet? Mine wouldn't, because of the air space needed around it, so wanted to be sure you checked....See MoreWhat is wrong with a corner pantry?
Comments (12)The esthetic reasons the corner pantry is not desirable: it usually looks like a hulking box which interrupts the lines of the kitchen and takes away feelings of openness. To me, they usually (but not always) have a kind of "builders-special suburban tract home" feel. Usually (but not always!) people just throw up some plywood shelves and call it a day. This is not the pantry of people's dreams from Houzz. I lived in a house that had one and it felt like having to constantly open an awkwardly placed door to go into a gloomy closet space. I think some people get caught up in the romanticized vision of having a walk in pantry and sacrifice way too much to cram it into a kitchen where it doesn't really fit. Functionally, I would much rather have a bank of roll out pantries or cabinets with roll out tray shelves. Having used both corner pantry and roll out, I feel that the roll out has a more "at your fingertips" feel that I prefer. It feels cooler and more organized. Regardless of what you ending up choosing, I just wanted to say "kudos" to you for starting this thread. I saw from your layout thread that you were quite attached to the corner pantry and so good for you for investigating and trying to learn more about it. It's not easy to question strongly held ideas sometimes. Whichever way you go, you will know it was a well thought out decision....See MoreRelated Professionals
